Am I a prude

Hi everyone.I have never for one minute every thought of myself as a prude,but now it seems I might be.Having worked in England in the building trade,and for 35years on the railways,I had worked with some right rough sods,and heard just about everything.But since I have live here with my young Thai g/friend,now things she says,really surprises me.Perhaps it's just the Thai culture I don't know.Maybe some of you may have the same experience .Its the Thais use of the word ----.Its never I need the toilet,but ,I want a ----.No matter where we are,or who we are with,it's still the same.Ive tried and failed to educate her.I know it's a small thing,she's a Loverly girl,but why does this rile me so much.

I've heard poot poot and pooh pooh but never s..t. Maybe she hung around with the wrong kind of People in the past ??

Yes not nice!.She dont know it's a bad word.Probably heard it around, even on a movie?
I hate hear Lady talk like that.
When I'm out and about, I never swear in front of strangers.But you get the odd farang dont give a **** and mouth off.
I bought my kids up without four letter words.Even though I used that stuff out with the lads.
To hear a Thai say **** ,to me, would be so "MAI DEE". [-X
I must say all the years I have been Thailand,I have never heard the word **** meaning ..... excrement, ladies private part. or, the action of copulation slang
If I had a really sexy ,. beautiful Thai lady, and she came out with words like that, I'd lose interest and need a Viagra!
Put me right off!

Never ever heard a Thai say === The expression most commonly used is the Thai equivalent "kee".Which I admit my family use quite frequently.

Many Thai's have no idea of which words are the improper ones, and it is usually because nobody has ever told them. They may have heard it from the movies, or hanging out with a cruder cut of gentlemen.

I know my wife has never used that word, though she has said a few things in public that made me raise my eyebrows. My fault...she was never told they were improper words for use in public. She is now properly schooled, and no longer would use them in public.

If she said anything about the function in English, she would use poop.

I know I am not a saint either, but I do try very hard not to use foul language in public or mixed company. If you have told your gf that these are not proper words to use in public or mixed company, and she still uses them, then there may be an issue above and beyond the use of foul language.

I have never heard a Thai woman use that expression. Sometimes I have heard them use the Thai equivalent, for example, 'I was doing that and forget what I wanted to do before going to the washroom.'

Once I was at a restaurant and told the people with me, in Thai, that I had to go to take a leak. The lady with me explained that it was suffice to say that I was going to the toilet as the others knew I was not going there to buy clothes or food. 555+

Missus doesn't swear as a matter of routine but they are really open about going to the loo. If I was looking for her and couldn't find her she has no problem with, "Sorry honey, I was having a poo". Farts like a champion too. In a very beautiful, ladylike way of course.

If your wife is saying the word in English, then I'd use a bar of soap. If she's using the Thai word that has the same meaning, I wouldn't be concerned.
Go to http://thai-language.com/dict/search and copy and paste ขี้ into the dictionary search box. The Thai word for feces or snot is also used in common words like scaredy-cat, a wax candle, and lip balm....among about 50 definitions showing.
I've known only a few Thais who are well enough versed in the English language to be able to use English swear words (if there is a proper way). Most lived/have lived in the US for a number of years. Others might have the idea that ขี้ in Thai is used the same way as s..t is used in English. It's not.

Your not a prude just good mannered.
Can't ever remember s..t being used, pooh pooh used if advising in english, but usually it is to tell me the new puppies are trained and going outside for a pooh pooh instead of the inside floors. Or she says to me that you need to go and have one.

As the same as sfbandung If she is in a playfull mood she to can also hold her own in a farting competition, but being a lady would never admit to such crasness.
I have though taught her to blame the dog.

Take up golf, sounds like you have to much time and are bored, if your gonna survive here you have to keep your mind busy, other wise little things bother you, I would put you in the bored prude basket though.

i,m not sure about thais not knowing the meaning of the word ---- , i was at a farang friends house ( yes i do have a friend )
when i asked his tw why her sister who is single was,nt married she said '' she to lazy all she can do is EAT , SLEEP AND ---- '' so she knew the meaning , as for her husband he never uses bad language so it was,nt learned from him .

The problem with cursing (as I see it) is, there's a time and place for it. If I'm with a bunch of friends who I know curse, I might throw a few nasty words into my conversation. If I'm with friends who don't curse, I probably won't either. If I'm with someone who I don't know well, I definitely won't curse.

I've been around a few expats who sling Thai vulgarities out when amongst educated Thais. They learn the words from their wives.....maybe in the bedroom, maybe in a fit of anger.......but I'd be extra careful of using those words amongst Thais unless I knew them very well (and even then, I don't).

If you want to piss off a Thai, call him/her a monitor lizard with the added emphasis of ไอ้ at the beginning.....ไอ้เหี้ย. Nothing vulgar about calling someone a monitor lizard in English, but I'd be extra careful of doing so in Thai.

To bring it back on course, unlike our friend from a local hostelry, swearing is bad form, we all know I am sure of many colourful expletives, using them in public or for that matter in private is to demean ones-self. I have on occasions heard foreigners swearing infront of my then wife and I just happen to mention although Thai she does understand these words, the foreigners concerned did apologise.
Thais swear often or so I am told and are even ruder than we are, swearing at them in Thai is not acceptable just ignore them they will soon go away.

One is not being a prude, just do not rise to the occasion, nothing gets up them more than you just ignoring them many years as a police officer taught me that, sure I can get upset with the best but generally i find that just pretending the foul-mouthed foreigner or Thai is not there is a better way , unless of course I have people with me who are visibly upset, then I will say something.

Richard PX1 and many others here, when was the last time you joked and laughed with your Thai partners and there Thai friends? Try it just once and leave your western high ground in your home countrys, a lot of expats in Udon seem to carry a lot of excess baggage related to there lives they seem to miss so much from there past.

If you choose to live in a foriegn country then adapt or go home, please don't whinge!

Even worse is to call someone kwan teen (ขวัญตีน). If you use that word, you had better be very good friends or you could find yourself in a fight very quickly.

Teenagers come up with a number of words that older Thais find offensive and very rude.

For example instead of saying eat food and drink with กิน and ดื่ม, some teenagers will use the word, 'dek'. I am not sure how to spell it in Thai but I have heard teenagers say 'dekข้าว'.

Did you ever visit a busy internet cafe in Udon where school children, also from Don Bosco, play online games. You really don't want to know how they curse during a game.

Having worked with a lot of female staff its I think for a lot of them normal to talk rather rude and to curse. One time I've heard a girl saying to her (best)friend (colleague): "Ee-sat, come here". If they talked with "Meng" and "Ku" (you and me) there is chance that they talk rather rude, but they find it normal.

Some farangs in Udon can't say a sentence without using "f*ck-in this and f*ck-in that", there is thread about this in UM.
Its for them also normal, I suppose.

believe the more vulgar word for eating is "dak". It is probably an Issan word used more in the country.. I've also heard "Yut" used for eating but it is used for an animal eating vice a person.. Soooo... If you invite someone to "ma yut ha" it would be like calling the dog to eat.. Funny though, if you're a Farang most of these more common expressions are totally verboten for you to use, even in jest.. You'll regularly hear Thais that are friends or relatives using the lower form pronouns; Goo (I), Eng (I) Meung (you), Mun (you/them) Soo (plural you). When I question these folks as to the acceptability of these terms I've been told, "normal for friends or family"....

The 'other' word for eating does not seem to originate in Isaan as it is common around the Sukhothai/Phistanuloke area too. I was told only teenagers use it, but who knows for certain?

'E' is also a bad word to use for people in Isaan although I hear it all the time. I remember a friend asking me to call her sister, 'E Dum Ling' in a crowded market. A lot of heads turned in my direction when I called the name. Meanwhile my friend and her nephew were in stitches laughing.

I got her back at a party in Canada, after my training, when she called out to the hostess, 'I need to take a leak'.
