Stand easy Private Earnest...you make a point , actually using the language daily is the best and quickest way to pick up a language .. being able to understand what Thais are saying around you is great . until they twig on and start to speak quicker in a more localized dialect .. pretty standard practice and common for expats to use slang around locals as well.

Khun Ling Mao (Mr. Stumbling Drunk Monkey), once you learn the local dialect, which is basically Lao, you will be able to hop over the border to Laos and inform them how amazed you are at the wonderful railway the Chinese have built for them by speaking in Lao. So, if someone in your family in Thailand asks you if can speak Thai, answer, 'nit neung', which in Lao means a little. In Thai, it is 'nit noy'. But, the fact you answered in Lao (the so-called local dialect) will scare the bejesus out of them as they will be frightened that keeping secrets from you is going to be very difficult in the future.

'Mao' can also mean dizzy or in your example, 'car sickness': car sickness = เมารถ

ผัดขี้เมา pad kee mao can be used for all sorts of dishes...basil, sea food, even mama noodles......generally used to describe using whatever's available to fry up a batch of something.

There's an interesting story about the French Muay Thai fighter who apparently intended to have his arm tattooed with the word มวยไทย but instead got the word ฆวยไทย.
I listened to two podcasts discussing this faux pas, but the expat broadcasters butchered the Thai pronunciation.....one equating the sound of the word ฆวย with ควาย

yes, i read that on one of the news outlets. with
thai netizens expressing severe doubt, a tattoo artist could make an honest mistake of this sort

มวยไทย = thai boxing ฆวยไทย while not spelled
correctly sounds exactly like the thai " johnson"
