Why not khun or pee to a farang

Post by harmonyudon » March 9, 2012, 7:14 pm

@Frankie,

My point was/is, in the context of DrJames post, that in such countries its not usual to adress
Mr. or Dr. followed by a last name. I feel in TH its the same.

Ofcourse they can express their family names, most famous example perhaps: 'Osama bin Laden'.
If you dont know what his name means,look it up.
I used to work in a place with several muslims as co-workers. Three out of five were
called Mohammed. So we started calling them by nicknames, by their family name or as Mo
number 1 or Mo number 2
I stay now somewhere in Udon where I meet daily several John's. I just say John and I
think you would do the same.

I often get called pee, loong, khun.
I've been at the hospital all day and every time I'm called they call me mister, despite having a Thai I'd card! Kinda racist.

'pee' ??? Try พี่ (phi). I get Uncle (ลุง) more than anything else.

Yes, everyone calls you Uncle, as far back as I can remember anyway.

This is true and in multiple languages. It started when I crossed the 60 years old line.

Why yes indeed, you probably did start the trend. The Mighty Chang and UdornLA certainly had nothing to do with it.
