I quite like Thai funerals.

Quite. They're a hoot. I've made some decent money on kao-neung. Sometimes I ply the village for set-up tents and the smell of dteen-gai.

We should have opened a broom factory when we arrived here....21 years ago. Instead, we've bought what seems like hundreds of brooms.......always two in the house, one on the front porch, another on the back porch......they seem to wear out fast. But my wife would never think of accepting a substitute for the old-fashioned sort.
The little camouflage frogs that take up residence around our home apparently like the security of a propped up broom.........I'll guess the snakes that hunt them down are intimidated by the straw.

Our VFW Post delivered some supplies to a remote village school today....45 total students. The sponsoring member of our post wanted to put together the fan we purchased. He did..........it took some doing, but he's lived in Southeast Asia the better part of his life, so a lack of tools didn't deter him.

Wow, I would never of thought to use a knife as a screwdriver. They are resourceful.

I walked about 20m past this shop.......then thought, 'quintessentially Isaan, for sure!', and backtracked to take a photo. On Srichomcheun Rd next door to my favorite noodle soup stop

My wife sensed her outdoor shoes were a bit heavier than normal. Lucky for her, she checked before inserting her foot.

This crunchy topping may be found elsewhere in Thailand......but I'd bet it's origins were in Isaan.

A friend was visiting some family members and sent me this photo. There are what I'd call 3 quintessentially Isaan aspects of this photo.....maybe more.

This photo was posted on one of the Udon Thai websites.......I've seen the same thing on several occasions....just never taken a photo.

While at the gardening store yesterday (just before Naka) I took this photo of a man from Kalasin.......having just delivered a load of bricks....taking a break in the cab of his truck. No time to rest, he told me. When he gets home it's time to go fishing.

And then, just about home, and we hit the village traffic jam! Typical for Isaan drivers, they're on the wrong side of the divided road.

As often happens, we'll be driving along, fdah, when I stop the truck and proceed to back up. My wife puts that look on her face when I tell her I have to take a photo. She rarely sees the 'quintessentially Isaan" aspect of whatever it is I take a photo of. But I do.
This photo, taken in HuiSamRan ห้วยสำราญ, about 18km outside of Udon, strikes me as a better idea than putting a tire in a rubbish heap.

Out where I live, it's not all that unusual to have to yield to the cows heading home or to greener pastures.......but this herd of water buffalo had apparently just finished up shopping at Lotus or BMW and were heading across the way. I looked for a herder.....but didn't see one.

fish farming pontoons at sri chiang mai.. they lost some stock due to a fruit juice factory up river dumping unwanted stocks in the river and they drowned in tomato juice ..on another occasion they couldnt cope with the flow and all dropped dead due to over exertion..

could be pineapple juice as well ..yes they have had a few setbacks due to the mekong pollution which is deadly from further up. human waste and heavy metals
