Thai drivers learners permit

Is there such a thing as a learners permit so a Thai can be taught to drive before applying for a licence and gives some legality to the teaching operation?.

I can see great pitfalls trying to teach someone to drive in my car. Insurance invalidation, police fines for the learner etc. I can understand village people learning on country roads but apart from driving schools how does the average Thai in the city learn?.

You mean that Thais know how to drive???????

Haven't really heard of a learner's permit before. Of course, one could call the driver's license that is issued to be the equivalent of a "learner's permit."

Best place to get your answer would be at the motor vehicle department. It is on the Khon Kaen highway about 10 K out. Go to the second floor and there are a couple of people in the office there that speak good English.

Wokka, according to my wife there is no such thing as a learners permit in Thailand. People are taught by family and friends. the place to go is Nong Han and it's a full day with Theory in the morning and a practical in the afternoon. If you know someone you can get a pass for Bht 700 guaranteed, and the license cost Bht250. You might have to take a few drives in the country. Good Luck

Aardvark, I am the teacher. I have Thai licences for car and bike. I want to teach someone else. I have heard Nong Han is the place to go rather than the place on the KK road. Thanks mate

I only recommended the place on KK road to get information.

As for Nong Han - if you do not live in that district - you will not be able to get a license there. Unless of course, people are greasing some palms...

Even when you live in Nong Han district (like me) they will grease you....
Came with all the paperwork (intl drivers license, certificate of residence, medical certificate) and was told I would need to pas exam on computer. Lots of talking ending with 1k baht will do it....for both car and motorbike.

Had same problem at AEK immigration office, the bad tempered man also asked 1k to print my certificate of residence.

Total cost 2k....nice scam

Gf also went there for her car license.
At the next doors copy shop she was told if she gave 600 baht she would pass the exam. No she did not pass....went back to the shop who called the examinator and all was ok...LOL and TIT

please make sure you teach your student how to parallel park! Then that thai will be the 2nd one to be able to properly park a car.

I have seen only 1 guy properly parrallel park a car, I was impressed

I asked my friend who that was, she said he was the big boss of the department of highways in Udon province.

Teelack got nicked for 200 baht from the BIB today for not having a drivers license while driving her moto.

So Nong Han is the place for her to go to get a thai drivers license?
We live in Udon Thani south of Prosi Rd. Will she be able to take the class and the test in Nong Han or is there another location for residents of Udon?

I have a non O and will have my 12 month permission to stay stamp based on retirement at the end of July. I was hoping to send her through it now while I'm out of the country and she can walk me through it in July or September. We will be heading up to Nong Khai in July and I will be visiting Bangkok and Thai Immigration the end of July, so that might be an alternative. I could visit the US Embassy again while I am in Bangkok if that is a more expedient route than multiple trips and days wasted traveling to Nong Khai.

Suggestions or map reference numbers would be greatly appreciated gentlemen.

I would think Nong Sung is the place to go since u live in Udon not Nong Han.
Easy money for the BIB,so many Thais drive without the proper licence,separate bike and car licences in force.
The new test area is just after nong sung on the left.

Taught the wife to drive a few years back (well, let her take the wheel in the villiage a few times, then drive back to Udon a couple of times). She had driven a total of about 200km before she went for her test which involved getting less than 50% of the theory right, and driving for exactly 18 secs around a 'speedway track' shaped circuit. She drove around the first and second bend, along the small straight, and 5 metres along the slip road. Stopped the car, engaged reverse, and reversed the 5 metres back onto the circuit, engaged forward and completed the circuit. LICENCE ISSUED

If Arthur Daly was living in Thailand, he would give a free driving licence with every second hand car purchased. (Bit like UK MOT certificate

)
