Medical Insurance
By the way, now that I think about it:
For several months I had the feeling like many other farangs that we were not that welcome in Thailand any more. (change visa laws, nominees for companies,...)
But after reading this, I think that they like me again.
They even want to pay for me
a "tourist fund'' to provide assistance to foreigners in emergency incidents while visiting Thailand.

I know of someone in an Udon hospital with renal failure brought on by boozing.
Correct me if I am wrong but alcoholism is considered self-harm and is NOT covered by any insurance provider.
The question is this: how does an insurer or a hospital define a person as an alcoholic?
And who is the best insurer in Udon?
Simple questions. Simple answers, please (i.e. less than a 10,000 word dissertation).
Thanks all

Chronic boozing and untreated Hepatitis A.Freedom Fried wrote:I know of someone in an Udon hospital with renal failure brought on by boozing.
Alcoholism is generally defined as "a chronic disorder characterized by dependence on alcohol, repeated excessive use of alcoholic beverages, the development of withdrawal symptoms on reducing or ceasing intake, morbidity that may include cirrhosis of the liver, and decreased ability to function socially and vocationally." There are numerous other definitions along the same genre which can be found at http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/alcoholismFreedom Fried wrote:Correct me if I am wrong but alcoholism is considered self-harm and is NOT covered by any insurance provider.

The argument could be made that many people here in Udon suffer from that disorder in one form or another.
You are correct, no insurer here in Thailand will cover alcholism or the related conditions. The same exclusion is in place with most insurance policies in the United States as well.
I would say that BUPA is the best insurer in Udon. However, my opinion is biased since I sell BUPA Health Insurance.Freedom Fried wrote:And who is the best insurer in Udon?
In addition to not covering alcholism, BUPA will not cover kidney dialysis regardless of the cause of the need for dialysis, alcholic gastyritis or alcoholic hepatitis. These are standard exclusions for all insurance companies, and are not exclusive to BUPA.

HI, can anyone suggest what type of Medical coverage I should get?
I am 37 years old I am Healthy. I want something that covers me incase I had a bike injury, serious illness or other type of accident. I need something that would cover me long-term in thailand.
I think what I need is some major medical plan any suggestions?
Thank you.

Okay resurrecting another old thread. I would like to know of your experiences/recommendations on insurance companies.
I note some negative feedback for BUPA and they may have been my no.1 choice.
There is a place called Virayah located in AEK Udon. Anybody use them?
AIA?
Also as I'm almost 44 and in relatively good health (okay mild hypertension) I was thinking about the possibility of accident insurance as opposed to health insurance as the possibility of getting hit by a 10-wheeler or falling down a hole in the road worries me more than a heart-attack.
Thanks.

I used to have medical insurance and separate accident insurance with AIG when I used to live in Phuket. For me,at the time 35 years old, for a mid range medical policy it was 28,000bht per year, the accident policy was 6,000bht per and luckily never made a claim.
After a few months living in Udon they expired, I thought about just renewing them but I got in touch with BUPA, through Doc when he was still in town, and for basically the same medical policy it is 9,000bht per year (I'm now 38).
