I've never lived in Udon, only had the chance to stay with the outlaws once or twice a year since Lord knows when. However, I do hear what you're saying, the more Farangs coming to live in Udon will increase the incidence of Farang idiots per 1000 head of population and we shouldn't worry about it because they are outweighed by the good guys. But I think what worries people is that Thais might start tarring all of us with the same brush (a bit like Farangs do when they look at immigrants in their home countries).

Although the whole world seems to have some people going nutzso lately I must agree it is and will remain a smaller majority of rascals. I was brought up to respect others and be the best I can be. I was taught at a very young age to behave myself and to behave publicly and privately. I am one of those persons (my wife included) who plan to retire in or near Udon Thani. I plan to steer clear of the wrongdoers and will do my best to help in the community, temple, schools or wherever my life leads me after I retire in the States. I promise I will not disrespect anyone or anything or cause myself, friends, family, locals any embarassment. My wife and I will remain on the high road at all times....

Has Udon too many farangs ? Is Udon big enough for so many foreigners . Well Udon has improved its fare for farangs, some entertainment has come recently which was not here 5 years ago. Sewrvices have improved over the same period. udon gentlemen is growing with all its problems which includes the stupid, loud mouthed idiotic element as well.
Sorry to say The Thai Govt rules on visas has not helped either, however those of us that like Udon and there are many must try by example to lea the correct way for behaviour. Most of us who have lived here for some time are known by the Thias and are accepted, many Thias I know complain too me about farangs who are stupid or ignorant, we commiserate but agree hopefully they will go again.
Lifes rich tapestry is full of pitfalls, bad farangs are part of this. However one hopes that over time the wheel may turn, if not Udon will go the way of other cities, but I do not think that it will be another Pattaya or similar resorts, NO beach, so tourist will be restricted to the sights and visa runs.

aircraft doc when you get here you will have to shave off the go tee they will look at you as being dirty. I think if the expat were not over charged by thai as well as expat owned business they would be less problems. and if thai Ladies would be more forthcoming and honest with the expat that also would help it would lower the amount of expat diving off the roof & balcony of high rise building. it is been my experience to see how well & generous the expat is with thai ladies but some of them practice deceit and steal money on false pretense of marriage etc to the expat only to get his money so my answer is I don't put all thai ladies in the same basket don't put all expats in the same basket some of us were fools at home they just didn't grow up. as long as no one get hurt why should any one care I don't

The German was red in the face and kept punching his fist into his palm. Nobody knew what was going on
Yesterday we went shopping at Homemart and whilst buying something another farang came over to us (and the clerk), and starting shouting
I was at the night market and a stocky "guy with European accent !" was yelling at his wife or gf. Maybe its time to let these guys know they are embarrassing themselves and others (then run )touchy bastds

Aircraftdoc, I don't know whether Ron was kidding you or not, but when I first arrived here, I had a very full VanDyke (goatee and mustache). I got many compliments from the Thais (male and female) with whom I came into contact.

The only reason I shaved and kept it off is that the g/f at the time liked me better without it. At some point, I'll probably grow it back.

Getting back on topic ...

More foreigners, even if they were all of good character and manners, are driving prices up some. But that's the cost of socio-economic advancement.

The quality of farangs in Udon is miles ahead of the quality of Thais.

If there are 10 numbskull farangs per 1,000, there are at least 50 scumbag Thais.

Most farangs that lose their temper here are merely having a hard time lowering their standards. Over time, you learn to accept a complete lack of traffic enforcement, double pricing, water and electric outages and horrible service.

 Yep,that is why everything is so cheap!

The problem is that 1 ''numbskull farang''effects our relations with the community and possibly our welcome here! #-o

Sorry, but I did not invite anyone, so I am not responsible.

But if I would have been there then I would have stepped in and gave them some backfire. Like your post shows this ---- gives a bad reputation for all germans. Which (as always) is not the truth.

Techland, you've raised some interesting points here. For one, the gentleman also gives a bad reputation for Farangs (not just Germans as Thais do not really differentiate do they? Hence the term Farang). The other point is, would you get involved in someone else's argument or leave them to it?

Comments made about quality of farangs as against Thais, show a complete disregard of Thais and thailand. I do not judge people as to their intelectual ability nor by their actions unless their actions are to the detriment their countrymen . If that is the case there are far more 'scumbag' farangs than Thais.
Thai actions should be gauged as to their culture and possible lifestyle. most farangs live a far better lifestyle sometimes their culture is beyond comprehension, but many actions committed here by farangs would never be tolerated in their own countries. it is always the actions of one or two from whichever country, that can bring problems to the majority , and yes if there was an argument which invaded my space, I may try to diffuse the situation. depends on the place ,time and what I percieved the argument to be about. But I would not interfere in a physical argument unless someone was seriously hurt.

No problem with decent respectful farangs that decide to settle in Udon. I don't even have a problem with people that would like to come and have a look as long as they don't damage the farang image or act like millionaires for the short time they are here. The reality is this is a different world than a normal tourist destination. Anyone that visits should respect that. Of course my opinion is worth what you paid for it.
