When the wife is wih me,they always come to her window because they can understand her. Now,while they are waiting at her window,I get out ,look at the pump meter and give them instructions while I watch for the total!

On a trip to bangkok,we pulled into a station, told them to fill up,asked the wife to watch the pump while I went to buy some coffee. She forgot as she went to the restroom. When I got back, the attendant was pumping gas from my pump into another car,so I had no way of knowing if the charge was correct or not!Especially since it was just a conveniet fillup, not a needed one!

It is very easy to be scammed in that situation! That doesn't mean that it happened! It just is so prevalent by many in dealing with falangs, that I feel foolish when I realize that I have made myself vulnerable! #-o

You never know for sure, but I doubt that the police in the Patong incident were anything but just normally lazy, taking the easier and faster way out by taking the side of the attendant! They don't want to do paperwork or investigation,''your rich''etc. etc. :(

Sometimes ,I entertain the thought,''so what if they beat me for some baht''as it is more enjoyable tolive a carefree lifestyle and we can afford it!

But besides my ,probably to big,ego that hates to be taken advantage of,I believe that attitude does and has increased the problem!

So,I maintain my vigilance

Stan sorry I think the price of gas is way to high even us expats who have more money every month are finding it hard to make ends meet with exchange rate of USD & brit pound and high gas prices. my wife was talking with a friend who works in carrefour pattaya who owns a M/B is now taking the baht bus to work her reply was gas to expensive so it hurting every one the Thai more because there income is much lower so to get ripped off at the pump would be adding to my frustration
what else can I say (post)

SUSCO = SUSpect COmpany

Post by Landsnark » June 19, 2008, 12:44 am

Original poster here - I happened down that same road this week, and it was indeed the Susco where I was scammed.

"SUSpect COmpany" is right. Needless to say, I filled up elsewhere

I now always ask for either 500 or 1000 baht when I go to a petrol station , that way rippping off is no longer an option, more frequent stops but thats life.
also only use caltex, shell or esso stations, none of the others, protect your engine my motto. :D

Guns, old chap, if they haven't re-set the meter, by asking them for a set amount isn't going to stop the scam.

only one way to stop getting scamed, get out and check the meter when you tell them what you want, having said that ive only ever been scamed at that susco station on the ring road, and i got out of the truck, but wasnt really paying attention, i only realised when i drove of and my computer told me i had enough fuel for x kilometers, and i should of had enough for xx. i felt like going back and sticking the nozzle up his jacksey , but what can you do. only avoid the place in the future.

Ron, I tend to agree with 'most' of your posts ............. but this is way, way,way off the mark !!

I have nothing to do with them getting low wage / they should have gone to school and 'gotten' a better education this way they would not be working at a gas station

I would like to see what type of education you would have "GOTTEN" for yourself, If you had been born in a Thai village, had parents that could only work a couple of months a year, and thus had no money to pay for books etc; AND had the advantage of being taught in the local village school by a (less than?) well trained teacher.
Perhaps, some of these guys/girls that work in Gas stations (and manage to make us 'intellegent' farang look stupid) have done far better with their limited education than we have ........... just a thought

Watch the pump calibrations as well. Ask for 20 or 30 litres exactly and have the baht amount already figured on your calculator. When they're finished, if it adds up correctly, go ahead and have them fill up till the price is rounded off. Calibration scams are happening in the States lately, and can happen here too.

Got this e-mail from a guy in the states a while back, I don't know how true the info is, but it makes good reading:-

TIPS ON PUMPING GAS

Here are some tricks to get more of your money's worth for every gallon..

Only buy or fill up your car or truck in the early morning when the ground temperature is still cold. Remember that all service stations have their storage tanks buried below ground. The colder the ground the more dense the gasoline, when it gets warmer gasoline expands, so buying in the afternoon or in the evening....your gallon is not exactly a gallon. In the petroleum business, the specific gravity and the temperature of the gasoline, diesel and jet fuel, ethanol and other petroleum products plays an important role.

A 1-degree rise in temperature is a big deal for this business. But the s ervice stations do not have temperature compensation at the pumps.

When you're filling up do not squeeze the trigger of the nozzle to a fast mode. If you look you will see that the trigger has three (3)stages: low, middle, and high. In slow mode you should be pumping on low speed, thereby minimizing the vapors that are created while you are pumping. All hoses at the pump have a vapor return. If you are pumping on the fast rate, some other liquid that goes to your tank becomes vapor. Those vapors are being sucked up and back into the underground storage tank so you're getting less worth for your money.

One of the most important tips is to fill up when your gas tank is HALF FULL or HALF EMPTY. The reason for this is, the more gas you have in your tank the less air occupying its empty space. Gasoline evaporates faster than you can imagine. Gasoline storage tanks have an internal floating roof. This roof serves as zero clearance between the gas and the atmosphere, so it minimizes the evaporation. Unlike service stations, here where I work, every truck that we load is temperature compensated so that every gallon is actually the exact amount.

Another reminder, if there is a gasoline truck pumping into the storage tanks when you stop to buy gas, DO NOT fill up--most likely the gasoline is being stirred up as the gas is being delivered, and you might pick up some f the dirt that normally settles on the bottom. Hope this will help you get the most value for your money.

DO SHARE THESE TIPS WITH OTHERS!

WHERE TO BUY USA GAS, THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT TO KNOW. READ ON

I thought it might be interesting for you to know which oil companies are the best to buy gas from and which major companies import Middle Eastern oil.

These companies import Middle Eastern oil:

Shell........................... 205,742,000 barrels

Chevron/Texaco......... 144,332,000 barrels

Exxon /Mobil............... 130,082,000 barrels

Marathon/Speedway... 117,740,000 barrels

Amoco............................62,231,000 barrels

Citgo gas is from South America, from a Dictator who hates Americans. If you do the math at $30/barrel, these imports amount to over $18 BILLION! (oil is now $90 - $100 a barrel

Here are some large companies that do not import Middle Eastern oil:

Sunoco..................0 barrels

Conoco..................0 barrels

Sinclair.................0 barrels

B P/Phillips............0 barrels

Hess.......................0 barrels

ARC0....................0 barrels

If you go to Sunoco.com <http> , you will get a list of the station locations near you.

All of this information is available from the Department of Energy and each is required to state where they get their oil and how much they are importing.

But to have an impact, we need to reach literally millions of gas
buyers. It's really simple to do.

you know you are correct I was off the mark I should have thought about
it before I posted that remark but I will say that is no reason to steal or cheat some one so I stand corrected it seem to me that most of the problems thais have come from a government that does not care for the poor just my opinion
