Holiday destinations?
Hi,
I'm trying to decide where to go for a family holiday(Thailand) in October, any suggestions where would be suitable for me, the better half and the 12 year old daughter.
Would like a bit of night life as well, but not Pattaya style!

Koh Chang is a lovely island with good beaches and scenery.....maybe getting a bit overdeveloped in some places now.
Whitesands has a nice beach with quite good nightlife.Klong Prau has a gorgeous beach but a bit quiet at night.
Check the weather forecast for October,though.....you wont want two weeks of rain
An alternative,on the mainland,is Hua Hin.Plenty of nightlife but certainly not Pattaya style.Four miles of beach,as well, where you can go horseriding which might interest a 12 year old girl.

Stan & Bob, I went to Koh Chang in April, yes it was scenic, with good beaches, but her indoors, wants somewhere new!
Zindane, Hua Hin, is one place, that we have on the shortlist,
I'm one of the strange people, that has to have his daily intake of Farang food, as I only eat a limited amount of Thai food, is there a selection of western eating houses in Hua Hin?

Yeh, OK, we were thinking of Nong Khai, however, with all this publicity about the place, we thought that there would be TOO MANY farangs the so we thought we would give it a miss.747man wrote:Ralph, There ARE lots of Farang Food places in Nong-Khai..... No but seriously there ARE Plenty in Hua-Hin and surrounding areas......Beach NOT up to much but IF you hire a car there ARE some beautiful beaches further south, around Prachuab Kiri Khan, takes about an hour to drive from Hua-Hin....
Its our intention to take the car anyway, so Hua Hin appears a distinct possibility.
Cheers,
Ralph

Understood Stan, well, I'm easily pleased, I would be be happy with beach or countryside, but the wife and daughter would prefer the beach.
Therefore somewhere with a decent beach, and if possible, where we can visit places of interest within reasonable driving distances, as I don't want to be driving all day.

Try this website www.huahinafterdark.com
Tells you most of what you need to know about Hua-Hin.....accomodation,restaurants,things to do etc.
Theres shedloads of farang eating places there. The beach is a bit rocky near the pier (Hua-Hin end) but if you head away from there towards this huge buddah in the rocks at the far end (Khao Takiab ??) its a lot better.....beach is about 4 miles in distance.
Also, about 25 minutes away,is the quieter beach resort of Cha-am and between there and Hua-Hin is the Dusit Resort Polo & Country Club.....ideal for a genteel Portsmouth fan like yourself !

I've just booked 7 days at the Hyatt Regency Hua Hin for early July. I've not been there for about 6 years so I imagine it's changed a bit.
Decided to drive down, have 2 nights in Bkk then on to Hua Hin. Flights for the missus,me and the baby Udon/Bkk return around 12,000bht (Thai airways). There is a flight service down to Hua Hin now, around 6,000bht each return,or taxi for about 2,000 one way. Then we will need transport when we are there so taking the car is more convienient.

ralph, if you decide on hau hin, its well worth the hour drive down to pretchuap and au minoa for the day, theres a science park and aquarium, which should keep the youngster happy, fabulous beaches, boat trips and a really pretty temple on the hill which has a monkey colony, there is also langur monkeys which are very tame and you can feed by hand on the airforce base between pretchuap and au minou. another trip is khao sam roi yot national park, about 40 minutes south of h h, fabulous scenary, also worth a visit is kui buri national park, get there at dawn and the rangers will take you into the jungle to see wild elephants. hope this helps.

make sure you have a pool, i persoanally would not consider hua hin a swimming beach, the southern end is ok for relaxing, but the city beach is a pit, dirty and well, the hores aren't house broken, so, keep them water shoes on. southern beach clears up a bit, but shallow. good to have a pool. you'll see a large buddha image and quite a few monkeys at that tourist temple.
personally, i like kata beach, phuket. another day if driving. i usually stop at hua hin for a break, used to be couple days, but now, just over night. then head to chumphon, beach about 15 kms north called thong wua laem, very nice. i've stayed there for a week at a time, if water is nice. then plan a day for the drive to phuket, with short stop in ranong and/or khao lak, which is also very nice. haven't stayed there since tsunami. patong is way to busy for me, karon is ok, kata is my preference. north to south. would not recommend swimming at karon beach, rips are dangerous, kata is much safer. in kata stayed at sereene resort, usually have low season discount (depending when school break is this year), pay 6 stay 10, 2 pools, walking distance to everythiing. if going during school break, have plenty of time for relaxing drive down and back, with plenty of time in phuket.
that's my usual routine.
