Seriouly folks it is not just the recevlopment of the old farang alley that will cause problems with parking it is the whole of the centre, when you look at the parking areas available and the amount of vehicles that fit in theire now, any lessening will cause major probs. I heard that the Soi which contains Irish Closk and Nobis to name but a few, the police are thinking of parking only on one side , changing sides on alternate days, now that will decrease again parking, notwithstanding the opening of the new bars, both there and near to night market ( already overflowing with vehicles) one can see going out and parking a vehicle anywhere near to intended location is going to be dammed difficult. As complex opens at 1100 hrs and closes at 21-2200 hrs, then all available spaces will be taken up long before we venture out.
The ramifications of lack of planning and over commercialisation with no decent infrstructure is coming home to roost, what the hell thay are going to do is anyones guess.
Out of town centre parking like many western countries would be a feasible option, except Thais do not like it, do not understand why and will probably shun it even if implemented.

i'm bias, since my idea, but that huge lot aka udcenter, would make a dandy public parking. keep the road next to it open, fix the other side that ls pot holed running along the train tracks as a way for vendors to tend to nightmarket. then make the road from mall turn to train station, one side, no parking and two way traffic, the other side, well, a free tram running from the huge public parking lot (udcenter), making a loop, past and down the mall and soi sauce, which would be walking only, not traffic, no parking. same with street that splits the night markets. get about 5 trams that hold 50 or more people and just do a loop around all day and night thru parking lot and walking sois. can't be any easier than that. no noise, no pollution, safe parking.
you can't drive down irish/nobi's street now with stopping to let other side pass. except for my clock and nobi run, i avoid the area as best i can, and don't dare go near it after 4:30 pm or weekends. been to night market 3 times in 6 weeks, 2 for meetings, when use to be at least a weekly visit. tho somehow, i get lucky parking when i do go. i'll always do my clock and nobi run, but mostly for late lunch in the future. before picking kid up from school after 4p. i hate driving in udon after 4p or weekends and avoid it as much as possible.
sorry, no work permit, can not be the city planner.

That clown could have been me.
I was on a 2-way street in Nong Khai, looking for Rayrai's office, and somewhere along the way the narrow street turned into a 1-way street. Cars and tuk tuks were blaring their horns and people were waving and I was thinking how friendly this place had become before I realized what had happened. Luckily for me, no BIBs were around, an economic opportunity they would have slobbered over. ![Laughing ](./images/smilies/icon_lol.gif)

Back to the parking issue that Guns mentioned....
I am amazed that they are actually going to develop all that site into a mall so that the only place for cars is below ground. Man that is going to be one hell of a big building...
Looks like the centre of Udon is going to be mighty quiet from once they start building until they complete....
Now re parking: No idea where this rumour came from. Please gentlemen, this is the biggest retail group in SE Asia, it is inconceivable they wouldn't make adequate parking arrangements for their customers, especially when they project that a major part of the market will be visitors from Laos.On the developement plan there is shown to be a multi story car park alongside and behind the temple to the right of the hotel , it is anticipated to accomodate over 1,000 vehicles, including 2 floors exclusively for hotel guests, with direct acess to the hotel through the new planned extension.I would emphasise however, this is a pro-tem plan and has yet to be finalised. The new dept store will have a retail floor area equivalent to the store in Chidlom, Bangkok.Plus over 200 individual retail shops of varying size.It is massive, if built as planned!
Whilst on this subject let me clarify the talk of access from the centre to Soi Pattaya. There is NO provision for this and in my view will never be, as it would defeat the planned objective of seperating the retail area from , what is considered to be : The less attractive elements. Not my description but I do agree with the sentiments.
On Soi Pattaya. The developement taking place has only"temporary construction" status. This means it is subject to review in 3 years time. This doesn't mean it will be pulled down then, just reviewed. Many of the places in town of similar temporary construction have the same type of consent and have been there well over 3 years, including our beloved night market.
