Power cable thiefs...

Post by Grasshopper » July 23, 2008, 2:15 pm

There has been talk of water meter thefts and now you need to watch your electricity cables too!

The new Nutty Park development has already become a victim of criminal activity, as thiefs stole the power cables from above a new bar development. The rubber was left behind with the copper core stripped out. Worth about 2000 baht as scrap and about 4000 baht to replace, so I have been told. Another nice little earner for some light foots.

However, I have also heard that a security company will be working on site from now on.

Just borrowed 50 mts that's all, you can have it back when Iam finished with it, Soi 7 now has power, seen the power company would not put it on, Its just a matter of moving cable from 1 area to another, so the power company has not lost out

telephone, electrical and any other copper cables were being stolen when I was here in 1971, good income if not caught. Had to run guard duty on 600 pair cable from Camp Samae San to Pattaya because of thieves want the copper lining and copper wire. Even has some of the cable dug up after the cable was laid. Some things just don't change.

Thanks for your comments guys.

I hear what your saying about 'same old, same old' crimes (church roofs and all that) and that this is old hat for many of you. However, it would be foolish for any of us to take a flippant stance to theft even when it seems to be a jaded issue, even if discussed to death a dozen times in this very forum! The important issue is awareness that this is occurring at a specific location, this week.

The point of my message is for due diligence, ultimately for the protection of our friends, partners or peer groups property. And our own property if anybody has anything left after the recent spate of water meter and copper thefts et al.!!

Best wishes to all :D

Whoops...you took it the wrong way Grasshopper,Not being flippant at all, what we were saying is that thefts of such materials is an age old 'Tradition' probably from any where in the world, but it has got worse due to the increase of the value of such materials of late, (Blame China i reckon..) and yes it is good to remind us about these sort of things as it goes on the back burner for a while till it happens to you/me or someone we read about on here...Morti's meter malarkey just makes most think to try to secure there property better, and thats a good thing.

Thanks Beer Monkey I suppose you have to laugh or cry about it, clearly to laugh is better if possible, so no offence taken. I think your China hunch is probably correct.

TO ALL - Any ideas as to how we can protect our powerlines!!

I had my first look at the Nutty Park site today and in particular where the powerlines were removed from. Grasshopper......... help is on its way in the form of Justin and Mae from Aussie Bar. I was told by one of the new bar owners Justin and his wife have purchased 2 units next to the Aussie Pub in the soon to be started and completed complex. Just depends if he can sell off the bar next to 'Kate Rauch' restaurant. With Justin around, I dont think the thieves will be game enough to steal anything.

Interesting comment Wizard, and where will he sleep on the powerlines or under them? Look I am sure if any of us are 'around' at the time of an attempted theft of our own, or mates, property that we have the nuts to say something the theiving c@nts. :D

Frankly, anybody who is skint and desperate enough to cut power cables and core them really doesn't really give a toss about somebody who they probably don't even know and isn't even there at 3:30 am on guard.

But thanks for the suggestion.

Regards

I know of 60metres of 1" cable stolen from a live power line 5 metres from a security guard post at a housing estate
The thieves posed as electricity workers, shorted the wires to keep power on, reomoved the 60 metres of heavy duty cable - reconnected the feed and drove off.
Value of 100,000 baht
Nobody suspected a thing.

That is very expensive cable, Paul. I can see why its worth it. The thieves must have some skills so as to remove the wires without getting cooked.

the suspicion is that the thieves are the same people who installed it (i.e. electricity company workers) - they knew exactly what they were doing.

Just an Idea for Mortiboy...now if Justin is as Scary as wizard suggests then maybe you could get a life size cardboard cut out of Justin and put it at the front of the house, then no one will touch you meter again..could be a money making opportunity for the right person. ;)

simple answer.

1) a new job comes up and we need 60m of heavy duty electrical cable - I know just where we can get some

2) scrap metal dealers will buy most items with no questions asked.

Further consideration of Paul's points:

2) scrap metal dealers will buy most items with no questions asked.
Point 2) Scrap copper which has been stripped from the rubber coating is just copper wire, an unrecognisable processed material. I mean with the rubber coating it is probably recognisable as a component part but if processed in some minor way by the thief
