Looking for good steaks

Western Meats Wholesale, I believe this is the correct name. Are they still in business? When I try to ring them up I get "This number no longer in service" or no answer. I understand there was a problem with the old sales rep but his replacement is supposed to be OK. Can anyone help? Looking for some good steaks.

If you are looking for good steaks try the Thai French (? French Thai) butchers right at the beginning of Srisuk Rd, near the Prince Prajak roundabout.

Udon Map ref M13/14.

Aznyron, How did you derive Texas from thaimac? Perhaps you know me, but I do not know your handle. But you do not have to be from Texas to know and enjoy a good steak. Anybody that thinks the meat and/or steaks from Thai-French market are any better than mediocre needs to take a trip to Texas. You can buy better frozen steaks at Macro

Oh!, and by the way, I live in Thailand, and have no plans, now or in the future, to go to Texas.

So I guess I will just have to put up with the well-priced mediocre steaks, in preference to the abysmal local variety, and the overpriced frozen imported varieties.

OK, I'm slow, I did put Texas in my profile.... Right now, when I gto to the States, it would be 75 miles north of Houston. Spent a lot of time in Corpus and lived 10 years in Port A

:D thaimac,I have lived her continiously for 10 years ,5+ in BK and 4+ up here!I have tried many different ''recommendations ''and I have yet to have a good steak in Thailand!
About 8 years ago in BK,I bought a big boneless rib eye roast from and outdoor market,cut it up into 1 1/2" thick steaks and cooked them on a BBQ!They were the best I found here.All the stuff I have tried from Tesco,Thai-French and other suppliers were already cut to thin and/or frozen and tough!

I never tried buying it from Villa Super or Foodland in BK!They might be an option!

There is a big advertised steak house in BK,that I was going to try once although I heard it was extremely expensive!I called up for reservations once and they had to be made 2 weeks in advance,so I passed it up!

The bottomline is the local beef is not comparable to USA beef and much of the beef sold in the stores that is imported is frozen and cut to thin!

Thaimac....I buy good sirloin and ribeye at Thai/french beside Villa-supermarket near Soi 33 Sukhumvit BKK. Most of the time they have stock, but if not I get it from Villa which is a bit more expensive but it comes from Australia and New Zealand. I hunted around a long time before I found these places, having being led to believe that some Bangkok and Pattaya meat purveyors import beef, a lot of hogwash, it was all local beef.

However you are up in Udon Thani and there is a Thai/french supplier as outlined by Jackspratt and they have tasty sirloin for around the 330b. I have purchased a few steaks from there and they passed the test for me. They cut the steaks to my spec's as well, 1/2 - 1" thick. I am afraid you will not get imported beef up your way.

When you fly into Bangkok next time, it may be worth your while to check out Villa and Thai/french if you have time that is. Another good source is Foodland in soi 5 Bangkok, they have Argentinian, New Zealand and Australian beef. Not as good as back in the US but very close.

their products are available an ngee soon market on ring road past airport turn on the way to nong bua lamphu. i enjoy there sausages, haven't tried their steak and doubt i will, quite expensive.

agree with stan, haven't found a good steak here, except buying whole ribeye or loin and playing butcher and chef myself. i've been hit and miss with thai french, so don't bother with them either.

I can confirm that every time I have bought beef (generally sirloin) in Thai French (Udon) it was chilled (not frozen) - as it should be. It is also presented as a large lump of beef, which you can have cut to whatever thickness takes your fancy.

It is both tender and tasty, and costs TBH330 per kilo. Comparable steak in Oz would be 3 times that price.

I also normally buy pieces of non-steak cuts from the display fridge, which I use if I want to cook a curry (Indian) or rendang (Indonesian). Again, this is far superior to the tough, just killed that morning, local beef.

Ron, as everybody knows, Texas is big. Lived there over twenty years. A couple in Texarkana, 5 or 6 in Corpus, 1 in San Antonio and around 8 in Port Aransas. Also spent some time in El Paso. Not knowing what you like, it is hard to advise as you can go anywhere from being a cowboy to a shrimper down on the coast. My favorite is Port Aransas, except now it is getting to expensive. With the housing crunch, now might be the time to invest there. I also like San Antonio alot.

Sorry Gents, I wasn't absolutly clear in my first post on this subject. Some months back I bought a quanity of rib eye steaks from the Western Meats Rep. At that time he was located near a local Bar/Apartment complex. I understand there was a problem and he was replaced. I understand there is a new rep but unable to reach him on the phone. Been to Ngee soon market, but they don't have the same rib eyes as I bought before. Anyway thanks for all the reccomendations

Have not tried Tops, happy with Thai/french and Villa and Foodland, but will give Tops a go when up there next. The company in Pattaya I recall was Western wholesale meat co possibly the same as I tried before and did not go back, all Thailand meat and they advertise it as such.

Do not be misled into believing it is imported from other countries. The "T" bones were as rough as a baseball mit. However when saying this, some people are happy with their meats.......all about free enterprise competition etc etc.

Increased to 325B/kilo now and be sure they give you tenderloin.
Checked last week and was shown some flat piece of meat, nit the round tenderloin i Had before, so I declined.
