Houses, farmland under water, more floods warned in Thai north
+ -
21:43, August 12, 2008

Floodwater has inundated more than 500 houses in three villages in Thailand's northernmost province of Chiang Rai, and destroyed over 3,000 rai (480 hectares) of crops, Thai media quoted officials as saying on Tuesday.

The authorities have reported that houses in Chiang Rai's Chiang Saen district are now under water of over two meters depth after the Mekong River overflowed its banks, and there is no sign that it would recede, the Thai News Agency reported.

A section of the road of over one kilometer linking Chiang Saenand Chiang Khong districts is also under water, making it impassable for any vehicles.

Relief workers have been sent to help flood victims as the water level in the river keeps rising.

Authorities have urged villagers living near the Mekong and twoother rivers in the province to pack up their personal effects to get ready for immediate evacuation to higher ground.

Meanwhile, Thailand's Meteorological Department on Tuesday issued a warning, urging residents of northern and northeastern provinces to prepare themselves for heavy rains and possible flooding.

The department said a low pressure ride over the North and Northeast would result in heavy rains in most areas of northern and northeastern regions, and cause flash floods in several provinces, especially Chiang Rai, Phayao, Nan, Prae, Lampang, Uttaradit, and Phetchabun Tuesday until Wedneday.

The department also warned that the Mekong and other rivers could overflow the banks from Tuesday to Wednesday, causing flooding in Chiang Rai, Loei, Nong Khai, Nakhon Phanom and Mukdahan provinces.

Well this morning the river is barely 1 foot from coming over, and there is some flood water in the road, that's come from the drains.

This mornings photos below:-

Well if it's higher then the drain level, then it won't take much from there. Sure looks nasty.

You would have laughed yourself silly at me, not much flood experience. We sand bagged the entry ways, came right in from the drains

arjay,
Hope it all works out OK for you.
I was in the UK May-July last year in the wettest summer in living memory.
The footage of some of the places that were flooded, Hull,Sheffield,Tewksbury etc.was unbelievable.....terrible for people who own the properties affected.
Trust you are renting ? [-o<

Many areas in Nong Khai flooded
The water level of Mekong River is approaching the critical point. Many areas on the riverbanks have been flooded.

Chief of the Nong Khai Hydrology office, Suwit Buaphern (สุวิทย์ บัวเผื่อน), reports that the water level of Mekong River is raising following heavy in the lower part of China and the upper part of Thailand. At 08.00 hrs today (August, 12th), the water level measured in Nong Khai province is 12.76 meters, slightly below the critical point of 13 meters. Mr Suwit says water from Mekong River will flood Mueang Nong Khai Municipality if the water level reaches the critical point.

Meanwhile, Mueang Nong Khai Mayor Songphon Kowitsirikul (ทรงพล โกวิทศิริกุล) says the municipality has closed all drainages connected to Mekong River and installed ten 8.12 inches pumps across the municipality area to release water around the clock. He says the municipality has warned people to move their valuable properties to a safe place and build sand-bag flood barriers.

Nong Khai has continuous heavy rain for many days and many areas have been flooded.

Just came from the riverfront. The water is about 1/2 meter from flooding on the promenade, which means the Tha Sa Det market!

Mut Mee Guest house is now flooded completely.they were elevated furnishes this morning!

The Chaiyupon market was full of water all around the raised pavilion where the vendors are!

The Nong Khai drainage system is presently full and backing up into the streets and settling in the lower areas

It is not presently raining in Nong Khai, but their is heavy cloud overcast, expecting normal afternoon showers which will probably cause some minor temporary flooding in the downtown streets and entrances from the sois!

One more heavy storm tonight or tomorrow will probably cause an overflow on the promenade.

We are on higher ground,so don't expect anything but backup flooding on our soi.Probably enough to keep the car wheels washed

Mekong water levels flood Nong Khai

The water level of the Mekong river in Nong Khai province this morning exceeded critical height and has begun to pose a threat of flooding. The Hydrology Survey Center of Nong Khai measured water levels at 13.19 meters today, an increase of 34 centimeters from yesterday and the highest recorded level in 42 years, exceeding a previous record flood high of 13.12 meters.

The Department of Water Resources reports that water levels in northern province Loei remain high and will thus contribute to a constant rise to the Mekong further south. Seventeen schools have been shut down following flood situations in 4 districts of northern provinces.

The governor of Nong Khai has ordered the opening of a temporary shelter for those afflicted by the flood.

Flooding on the rise: hits Thai Mekong River provinces

LOEI, Aug 13 -- Heavy rains continued to hit northern and northeastern Thailand on Wednesday, pouring water from many tributaries into the mainstream Mekong River, with the weather department issuing a warning that more rain is on the way due to a low pressure system passing the regions from neighbouring Laos.

The Mekong River early Wednesday overflowed its banks here and in at least two other districts in this northeastern province are now under floodwaters measuring some 50-70 centimetres in depth.

Six houses in a village in Chiang Khan district were destroyed and several roads damaged.

Relief workers helped local residents to move their valuables to higher ground.

The Meteorological Department station in Loei said current heavy rains resulted from a weather system trough of low pressure across northern and northeastern Thailand. Heavy rains will cause the water levels in the Mekong River as well as other rivers to continue rising and people living near the banks should be on alert for flash floods.

In the northernmost province of Chiang Rai, the flooding situation remained critical as the water level in the Mekong River receded only slightly while a section of the road linking Chiang Saen and Chiang Khong districts was still under water over 50 centimetres deep.

A port in Chiang Saen was closed due to the sharp rise of water volume in the river and goods loading or unloading into boats had to be conducted manually by dockside labourers. (TNA)

Hi, I'm back!!

Well, in places, the river is gently lapping over the edge and across the pavement and flooding the riverside road. A large length of the road is closed. Other parts are not flooded, because they are higher.

It will take another foot or so, before it inundates (fills) the road and proceeds beyond the far pavement into the town (in the area where I am anyway).

To be on the safe side I made a couple more trips to move stuff out,. Thank you those who offered to come and move stuff for me. I'm managing ok thanks.

I have some photos I will post later, as I haven't eaten yet, and we are having another heavy rain shower.

My GF's bus journey to Loie terminated at Pak Chom last night, so she had to overnight there. Butshe has since managed to get where she was going and is now working her way back, visiting family on the way.

Got a friend working for the mekong river commission website, who sent me the following link:

Water Level Status

WARNING!

Water level at Luang Prabang station is still above flood stage and is expected to decrease from tomorrow. Water levels at Nong Khai and Vientiane stations are still higher than flood stages, and slightly increase tomorrow and then decrease in the following days. Water level at Paksane station has passed alarm stage. However, it is most likely that water level at Nakhon Phanom station reach alarm stage tomorrow, Thakhek station which today passed alarm stage reach flood stage tomorrow, Mudahan station reach alarm/flood stage tomorrow, Savannakhet station reach alarm stage in few days, and that water level at Pakse station reach alarm stage tomorrow. Water level at stations downstream of Pakse keep increasing for the next 5 days. Particular attention should also be given to Tan Chau station where water level may reach alarm stage tomorrow. And water level at Koh Khel station is approaching alarm stage.

Water levels at stations upstream from Chiang Saen to Nong Khai are presently higher than the levels at the same period of year 1966 which is considered as the worst flood year in over 100 years. Currently water levels at all stations upstream from Kompong Cham are higher than the levels at the same period of year 2000.

Notice

The current level of the Mekong River is very high and may flood the low lying areas or overtop the levees/bunds. The concerned agencies should inform the relevant town authorities to check the levees and bunds, and to warn anyone with buildings or other valuable and vulnerable objects outside these bunds and levees to prepare as well as to check their stock of flood fighting material (sandbags, pumps). People living in low lying areas should also be prepared for imminent flooding.

I have made a topic on the flooding of North Thailand, I've been there three times already and were in Udon last May to visit my friends parents. From there we mad a trip to Vientiane, passing Nonkai.
Next to it we are also accustomed to the Chiang Rai and Chiang Mai region and also Mekong, friend of mine's parents saw their rice fields flooded, they live near Chiang Khong.

It is over and into the road now at various points along the river road in Nong Khai, and the road is inundated, but it doesn't seem to have risen anymore since, so it's not climbing the far pavement yet.

Though near the main jetty/pier area the water level is still two steps below the promenade/patio and road area. The road from behind there, past the Pek bar, almost as far as the Pantawee Hotel is however flooded, as are parts of some other roads.
