In short, it's an automated script (a.k.a. web crawler) sent by search engines to gather information posted on the internet.

Now this is the kind of put down that I like, one that you have to think about ;)

Jing Jai's link also identifies a Bot as something that can collect e-mail addresses. I s'pose these Bot's have been pinging this site for ages, it's just that this new site makes them visible for us. :|

Galee is also right. Botflies are a group of parasitic flies which lay their eggs on the skin of mammals . One or 2 species can affect humans. For those of you who are not squeamish, try the link below.

Bot also refers to a computer that has been compromised by a hacker  (often referred to as a Bot Master) and can then be added to his Botnet. Such computers are used to send SPAM using SMTP (Simple Mail Transport Protocol) software that the hacker installs remotely. It is not unusual for a Botnet to contain thousands of computers and be capable of transmitting millions of SPAM e-mails in just a few hours.

Forgive my technological naivete' . Since a "[bot]" can be potentially harmful? Aren't there programs designed to prevent them from entering, say forums? :?

The google/yahoo/etc bots are not harmful, they scan for content to include in web searches and without them Udonmap would not show in searches carried out. They have been there for a long time its just that with the new forum software now you can see them.

I shouldn't worry about it jingjai. :D
The definition whiskeybravo gives above is as relevant to the [bot] you see as a user as the botfly one. :D :D
A crawler, also known as a spider or a bot, is the software Google uses to process and index the content of webpages. The AdSense crawler visits your site to determine its content in order to provide relevant ads.
