Bot also refers to a computer that has been compromised by a hacker (often referred to as a Bot Master) and can then be added to his Botnet. Such computers are used to send SPAM using SMTP (Simple Mail Transport Protocol) software that the hacker installs remotely. Forgive my technological naivete' . Since a "[bot]" can be potentially harmful? Aren't there programs designed to prevent them from entering, say forums?

The google/yahoo/etc bots are not harmful, they scan for content to include in web searches and without them Udonmap would not show in searches carried out. They have been there for a long time its just that with the new forum software now you can see them.
