Why You Come Thailand?

Post by Irish Alan » September 19, 2008, 1:14 am

Okay sorry for the vague title and I am not REALLY asking the question but be prepared. Maybe they have caught you already as I have been caught 3 times.

I refer to the Rajabhat students. It seems they have been given the assignment of finding a foreigner and engaging him/her in conversation.

1. Saturday in the Charoensri Complex was stopped by lovely girl and was given a questionnaire to fill in. I thought it strange as it had multiple choice and you could only select 1 answer. So I have ONLY been to Udon and know nothing of any other place even though I've had about 7 addresses. I selected "Wai" so I know nothing of the language or customs. I tried to tell the girl but she just smiled and that was it.

2. Charoensri complex again was mobbed by about 8 students male and female and they had a camcorder. I had to do my interview on camera. Basically the same questions.

3. Centrepoint... About 6 students male and female same questions. No camcorder just digital camera.

So there you go if you are nabbed at the weekend it is all just in the interest of their studies. They only ask for a few minutes of your time.

Recently on a train in Oz, I found myself traveling amid a group of early teen students, cheerful , cleanly dressed and obviously a credit to their (mainly Asian) parents. The kids were involved on a project filling in their notebooks etc and a girl respectfully asked if I would answer their project question.

Against my usual strong objection to being bailed up "in the street" by people who benefit from my answers, I agreed.

The question was, "how many carbon miles do you spend in a day". I had to plead absolute ignorance as I had never heard of a carbon mile in my entire 66 years. The kids were disappointed and probably thought I was from a different planet (which probably I am).

I think carbon miles is a bit like "tons of carbon emissions in the atmosphere". Even the ones who make the claim cannot explain how the figures are arrived at.

A couple of years ago when I was interviewed, since they were children, I couldn't be as honest as I usually am and deferred to the reasons a bit farther down the list. Afterwords I felt really bad for a minute or two;o)

Never thought of that... Would have been a good one. They really struggled between about 6 of them to ask the questions. There was a lot of, "Alayna!"

The questions were based on us all being tourists, it is like they do not know a lot of us are here full-time. I tried to suggest this to them but they didn't understand.

This happened to me in Ayutthaya on 16 August. I had two different groups of students approach me and ask me my occupation, my age, why I came to Thailand, what I liked about the country and if I would return or not, and so on. The first group were from Lop Buri and invited me to write my answers in Thai. For the most part that worked out successfully. The second group were from many areas in Thailand from Chiang Rai in the north to Udon Thani in the northeast, Bangkok in the centre and Nakhon Sri Thammarat in the south.

click on 'post reply', that will reopen page, and between post box and 'save/preview/submit', you'll see 'browse' option, click on, then find, and hit 'host it' and as it says, patience. opens new window, copy and paste appropiate one, via "Img' botton, then done. or, below "save/preview/submit" buttons is 'uploade attachment' tab, click on that, and use browse feature. now, the clicker i didn't notice, below all that will say attachment or something, it is already loaded, but won't show in reply box, hit preview and see if it took. good luck, took me a couple times, but i wasn't paying attention. old dog :fryingpan: :fryingpan: :fryingpan:'Im

i find the latter, 'upload attachment' much easier, as i can't figure out which one of the other things to use, too many choices....

This seems to be the normal practice in areas where there are a lot of Farang. In Chiang Mai I have been pounced on three or four times by students with the same type of multi choice questionaire. Each time they have asked me to sign the paper and got a photograph as proof that they have interviewed me.

Thanks Beer Monkey. As usual, you are a wealth of useful information.

And now, let's see if I can download one of my photos of the interview brigade from Lop Buri in action at Ayutthaya.[/bDO NOT Use Link Below when posting. Use FORUM Links above for posts

Tilokarat, I feel like you've been tantalizing me for a couple of days now with the unfulfilled promise of those photos!

Maybe I'll have to try posting something on the Forum myself to check out just how difficult it is to add photos with the new format.

Well, something may happen tonight...later...much later. At least Image Shack is in the process of 'saving' one of the photos although it has been almost 90 minutes that they have posted the message, 'saving 441.7 KB , thank you for waiting'. What I do once the photo is saved is beyond me, but I will follow Beer Monkey's advice and go to show advanced at the bottom of the page. I am not sure what I am supposed to cut and paste, and where either. Isn't there some automatic process that transfers the photo from Image Shack to Udonmap?

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm. Well, I shall try one more time. First step is that I went to the bottom of this page and browsed 'Get Your Own Uploader! Next, I hit the button for host it! This took me to Image Shack where three thumbnails were completed for my browsed image, one for websites and two for forums (1) and (2). Then something new happened that did not occur when I tried this previously. A resize for window appeared on the screen. I was not sure what to do here. But it seems that the photo is finally getting saved. One must be patient at this stage of the process.
