Re: good on you guys
It's amazing the warmth and friendship shown to any "outsiders" on Udonmap!
I found the thai people of Udon almost universally kind, open and friendly in my time in Udon Thani.
The falang on the other hand........
What is wrong with all the crabby people on this forum? If you're not from the UK, have been here for 20 years and have 1,000 posts or more it seems the members will simply ignore you. Helpful or cordial certainly is not a characteristic of the membership here, I'm afraid. I enjoyed my time in Udon in the last year principally due to the great thai people I have met. I think the membership on Udonmap could take a cue from those folks who surround you and put away their, "WE'RE FULL. GO AWAY!!" signs!!

Re: good on you guys
Steve ,when I first moved here,I thought that the falangs were unfriendly also!In America,I was used to the friendly hello and the pleasant reply which I noticed didn't happen to much in Thailand between falangs that didn't know each other.I would say ''hello'' and most of the time,I would be ignored!I used to say ''f**k you too''under my breath
I have lived here over 10 years now and I have come to realize that not only is there a large cultural difference amomgst falangs and Thais, there is also one between falangs from different parts of the World! Many of the non USA falangs don't have that neighborly custom of acknowledging strangers, many of us have become cynics and untrusting in our relationship attitudes due to ''experiences''while here in Thailand!
I still say hello to strangers ,if I have eye contact otherwise I ignore them!To Thais,I nod or wadee as I pass them, but I don't encourage relationship!

Agreed, British people are more reserved, probably frightened of rejection!BKKSTAN wrote:Many of the non USA falangs don't have that neighborly custom of acknowledging strangers, many of us have become cynics and untrusting in our relationship attitudes due to ''experiences''while here in Thailand!
Re: good on you guys
A little over 7 years ago. Me and a friend from England decided to escape Jomtien during Songkhran, and do a week long road trip. While staying at hotel in Chantaburi, we got on the elevator (lift) one morning. There was another couple of people in the elevator (lift). I immediately started talking: 'hey, good morning, how's it going, where you from, visiting, etc.' The people were quite friendly, I think they were from Australia or New Zealand (I always get those two mixed up ). I suggested to the people we meet up later for a drink. My English friend looked aghast . When we got off the elevator (lift), he turned to me and said: "you Americans, you talk to anyone, don't you?" I replied: 'sure why not, we were all in the same elevator together. What do you do in England, stand there and stare straight ahead, never even make eye contact?' His reply was: "Yes". Anyway, we were good enough friends that we accepted each others unique behavior.
I have lived in Udon now close to three years. When I first moved here, other farangs seemed to be friendlier, walking through Lotus people would acknowledge each other. Now walking through Lotus, I either get blanked or get a scowl 90% of the time. The times-they are-a-changin.

jj, easy to tell an Oz from a Kiwi.
Just ask them to say "fish and chips".
If they respond with "fush and chups", you've got yourself a Kuwu

Re: good on you guys
I'm a Brit (English) and I think I'm friendly. I usually nod if I see another farang and will readily initiate or return a smile.
What I don't like though, is as I recently experienced, another farang whom I've never even seen or met before, shouting from across the other side of a crowded bar in an overly friendly way, - "Hey mate, where're you from?". Followed by, - "Where're you staying". "Where's your GF from. She is your Gf, is she, or your wife?" ... and more.
Then he wondered why he started getting cool responses!!
I prefer to get to know someone slowly before we start exchanging intimacies!!
Going back to Steve3's OP, maybe he could enlighten us on who, or what exactly, has upset him?

Re: good on you guys
jingjai , the key word for me in your post was [ accept ] yes maybe nationality has something to do with it , but i think some people are self assured enough to accept others easier . and i agree with what you said about 3 years ago , i too have noticed that people are much less freindly than they used to be . very sad . jack , thats very cunning , but i usually just say , where you from ? . i just couldnt see myself going up to a stranger and asking them to say fish and chips somehow !!!!!!!

Re: good on you guys
I remember shortly after moving to Udon an American guy came up to me and a friend in a bar and started a conversation. He wanted to know pratically everything from what my inside leg measurement was to what I'd had for breakfast. My friend and I were very non-responsive, to which he said, "hey, you guys don't talk much do you".
We explained that it's not the English way to open up to a stranger on first meeting someone. Were more reserved.
Now me and the American guy are good friends.
I seem to recall a topic on the map where someone was talking to a stranger about their personal situation about their Visa, or something, and the stranger dropped them in it. Would this have happened if they took the British attitude of initially keeping their distance until they know them better?

Well said Gallee. You also have to factor in that a lot of guys around Udon are nutjobs...
Also, A few times I have engaged in conversation with American folk and immediately regretted it as they would proceed to talk my ear off.
Why do Americans like to talk ....and talk...and talk...and talk??
Re: good on you guys
I first came to Udon over four years ago. Then,in Tesco Lotus, you saw very few farangs so I think it was more natural to acknowledge each other.jingjai wrote:

Nowadays there are loads of farangs in there.I think the Brits and Europeans are more reserved in acknowledging than, say, the Americans who engage you in conversation straight away.....just the way different nationalities are.
But I always try to smile, particularily if their is a pretty Thai lady heading towards me in the same isle !
Just when I thought our chance had passed, you go and save the best for last.

Hey, I think I resemble that remark!oldfield wrote: Well said Gallee. You also have to factor in that a lot of guys around Udon are nutjobs...
I was sitting in a bar at 3AM looking around at the other guys in the bar thinking the same thing until I realised their all probably thinking the same thing about me!
If you think many falang that come to udon are nutjobs.....and you came to udon.....hummm, whats the comon denominator here?
We're not all like that. I've also had my share of drunken Englishmen (incoherently) talk my ear off.oldfield wrote: Also, A few times I have engaged in conversation with American folk and immediately regretted it as they would proceed to talk my ear off.

Where U go?
Re: good on you guys
I think many of us have preconceived notions of what other nation's citizens are like. I confess that I do as well sometimes, but if the better part of us wins out we put those aside when meeting someone new. I can't imagine anyone with manners asking personal questions about your "pocket mouse" or the lady who is accompanying you. If I meet someone and they don't introduce the lady with them I assume it's a private matter and would never inquire. I could never defend anyone's bad behavior in those situations. And since the only time I have ever come close to a physical altercation in Thailand is when I was having a drink with friends in a bar and a shaved Englishman (judging by his accent) with tatoos up one arm and down the other gave me a belt across one arm in passing, saying something to the effect of "F*ckin' 'septics" should I assume all Englishmen are cut of the same fabric? Of course I shouldn't. I've come to know many fine English gentlemen in my travels to Thailand the last dozen years. I know quie a few great guys who are English businessmen in Patt....... Oops!! I nearly forgot! That is a FOUR LETTER WORD on Udonmap!
But as long as I'm on the topic, I would wager there are quite a lot of gentlemen on Udonmap who have visited that "Sadom by the Sea" known as Pattaya but the town is given a horrible beating any time it is mentioned. It wouldn't be my choice to live if I was in a long term relationship either. That's what brought me to Udon actually; a desire to move away from the night life that's in your face a bit too much for me. But I know fellows with wives and family there and they seem to adapt to it. Far be it for me to judge them or their choice of cities.
And one other topic before I get bounced off here for insubordination! Maybe it's my imagination but aren't we awfully hard on the ladies who formerly or presently work in a bar? I know this forum was never meant as a discussion board for those subjects, and I can respect that. But it seems we go out of our way sometimes on here to speak in a degrading way about them. They are all human beings and deserving of some measure of respect, regardless of their station in life. I may avoid them in their professional capacity but it is part of Thailand. We all knew of it before we came here and I would venture to say a fair few of us have come to know one or two over the years. It smacks of hypocrisy when we may have enjoyed their company sometime in the past, but suddenly behave in a holier than thou manner. I prefer to give them the benefit of the doubt and avoid discussions on the matter if I have nothing good to say about a person's choice of career.

Drivers licenses: http://www.udonmap.com/udonthaniforum/t ... t4886.html
Mocha Restaurant: http://www.udonmap.com/udonthaniforum/l ... 70-15.html
I didn't mean to stir-up anyone's long standing resentment for Americans, but it seems that was the net result. That's a pity I think because I really wanted only to stir your curiosity enough to think about how some one new is treated on Udonmap. Feel free to tie and gag me and pitch me in the nearest river!! :-"

Re: good on you guys
Steve3, thanks for enlightening us on your thinking and a few of your (no doubt many) experiences. Please be aware and re-assured you are welcome on the Forum, as are your views, even if on occasions they may differ to someone else's!! As said, we are all different. And you are right we should not generalise!
If you feel there is a "down" on people from Pattaya on the Forum, if it is true, it may, I suspect, be due to Udon people sometimes having bad experiences of some less desirable people from Pattaya coming to Udon and creating trouble.
So again, welcome.

So would I, i always enjoyed patters, not been for several years but get a little saddened by its downturn and increase in crime.Steve3 wrote:I would wager there are quite a lot of gentlemen on Udonmap who have visited that "Sadom by the Sea" known as Pattaya but the town is given a horrible beating any time it is mentioned.
Ok.. well in all fairness you did get a reply on the first post from pompui, more details could of followed i guess, but you was not totally blanked, sometimes topics get pushed down the list and out of the spot-light, so not a bad idea to re-post(bump it up) to get more attention sure you would of had more replies.Steve3 wrote: most text removed

And yes no answer/reply on the second post, for some reason..but if you go back a page your answer was already posted by wazza on the directions.
And purely out of interest why did you pick this original topic from pamthepson...was it because no one had made a post after her one..?
As for new posters in think it a good idea for their first post with a little intro, but remember we do get many wind-up first time posters so maybe lots of regular posters just get that feeling, i enjoy the wind-ups its a bit of fun, and would think it much better if more members posted and didn't lurk so much, it might seem like some of us bite at times but imo this is still a far better forum than most.
Very Sharp Photos by the way.
Thanks.

Steve, keep going fella, there are one or maybe two anal people on this forum but there is a great number of stand up guys on this forum who are not two faced and offer a wealth of advice and genuinely willing to share with all comers.
The wind ups are also important to ground everyone, some get uptight but most enjoy the hunt.
I for one welcome you and would ask you to stay in touch as there are some good level headed guys here who don't take themselves too seriously.
