Yes Astrid,
You receive a 30 day tourist visa on entry, this can be extended at the tourist police offices, ONLY in Vientiane, at a cost of 2 Dollars US per day up to a max of 90 days, then you must leave the country, and then re-enter, and the process starts again,.
I done this for a period of almost 5 years, with no problems.

Ha ha , Doing a visa run from Lao to Thailand, round the corner and back in again. Sounds familiar. Duty free wont be a bonus ??
Re: Visa for staying in Laos ?
Your visa is for 30 days. As Ralph says, this can be extended. How much do you want to spend on accommodation? Apartment style accomodation is expensive. How about a nice guesthouse wtih large rooms and a pool for $30 a night? Try Villa Manoly.

Has anyone here ever heard of a multiple entry visa for Laos?
This would be for someone wanting to cross the border frequently, and not staying in Laos more than about a week at a time.
Thanks

multiple entry visa for Laos?
No such beast. You can get a business visa for about $500 per year if you have a sponsor or a decent fixer.
