ATM's lesson learned

Post by Bump » March 4, 2006, 4:45 pm

I always use Bangkok Banks ATM's since that is where I have an account. Twice three times now the machine has kept the card. The first tme at the main branch, the reaction of the staff come back on tuesday and we will give it to you. I dind't see it that way and stood my ground and got ti back wihtin ten minutes.

The Next time at big no sure what heappend that time I lost the card so three moths later adn many phone calls to the staes and a friend sending the card to me, I finally got a replacement. Must have cot me about 8K baht. So not something I take lightly.

Uesterday at the big C machines one has malfuction then comes back online to do buiness, With my card from America in it. So I called the business number of the Bank of Bangkok in Bangkok and learn that Thanachad branch ( not sure of the spelling it's the one by the Napoli Hotel) takes care of the ATM's at Big C. I'm told to go there and talk to the manager, I have had problems at that branch in the past and knew I was in trouble.

Sure enough I get there and the manger is in a meeting in Khan Kean. Explain the problem and am told to come back Tuesday, told them no I wanted the card returned immediately. No come back Tuesday, ask to speak to whoever w in charge, never was givin that information.

45 minutes later I still being told no, come back Tuesday. Told them you have my property and I want it back now. No come back Tuesday.

Called back to the main offices in Bangkok, lady gives me the song and dance up to manager. Fine the manager is not here, then you should talk to the person in charge. Tell her they won't tell me who is charge so I can talk to them. The next tactic was to just put me on hold for 20 minutes so I would give up and go away. This happened twice, the third time I called I asked to speak to a supervisor immediately. when he answered the phone with what I was going through I was very carefull to write his name down.

He went through a big song and dance telling me the ATM card belonged to an American Bank and they would not release it until the bank in America said to do so. What he really was saying you can make a lot of problems for yourself, if you keep pushing. So speaking his name specifically I said let me make sure that I understand what you are saying to me. After which he created a new threatening song and dance. Finally I said to him look the people at this branch have already said they will go get the ATM card but they don't have the "power" to do this. So why you don't you just tell them to go get it. Thi i not something I did the bank made a mistake not I and it was not up to me to fix, but up to the bank.

So then it was if the manager is not there there is soemone in charge talk to them. My reponse you are not listenting to what I am telling you, no one will tell me who i cahrge. You have come back on Tuesday iIdon't have the power to do that. OK give me the name and the phone number of the person who does ahve the power. Silence you could have heard a puin drop, then I can;t do that. o agian with the name let me make sure I understand you, you are refusing to help a customer of your bank?

The response let me talk to the people at the bank, we are still on my cell phone, as he refused to call the branch. A shot converation the man in Bangkok was given a phone number of the branch manager who was in Korat I would assume.

15 minuetes later I''m told they will go get my ATM card.

This didn't happen quickly but it did happen and I got my ATM card back.

So what did I learn never use the ATM's for Bank of Bangkok at Big C.

Always try to use an ATM where there is a functioning branch, because thay have easy access, to the machines at the branch. Doesn't mean you won't have problems, but it mihgt be an easier fix.

I felt sorry for the workers at the branch, they would have if they could have helped me immediately, but they would have been fired if they had. They caught heck from me, it was the only way I was going to get anything done.

I will probably look for a new Bank after I renew my annual just to confusung to make the change now I would end up with two letters to prove my deposits for the year. So with only a few months to go it is not worth it at the moment.

This is really the first major problem I have had with the bank. But one other aspect is bothering me when we financed our home Bank Of Bangkok wanted 50% down, this is with a three year track record of million in deposits. Even spoke to the manager who know me, he told me that even if he approaved Bangkok would not approve it. Financed the home with SCB 30% down. So maybe SCB would like to have my acount moer the Bank of Bangkok, worth finding out.

I do know one thing I don't enjoy arguing with people who are holding and using my money, when it's time for them to do something as trivil as this was.

So I hope I get lucky and machines stop eating my card :x

Yikes...

So the moral of this story is as you already stated (I haven't figured out how to use the quote thingy yet!) only use the ATM's at a branch. Thanks for the advice, I will certainly heed it since that was how I was going to access/exchange my money when I get there for my trip.

I hope you have better luck in the future with the ATMs! [-o<

Thank you for all of the warnings.

When shopping around for a new bank when we move to Udon, Bangkok bank will be at the bottom of my list.

We have never had a good feeling experience with Bangkok Bank........As a matter of fact ,we had 4 Thailand bank accts.Bangkok Bank was the one we had to close to protect ourselves from the atm card being used after our robbery. They showed lno concern about our urgency to stop the card, making us wait 1 1/2 hrs for service although the only busy employee was the customer service woman that we HAD to talk to.I was so angry,That we went down and withdrew our funds for which they charged us 1%.The other banks jumped right on the problem, stopping the cards and issueing new ones.We have been in many branches of many banks in Thailand and TFB has always been consistently the most falang friendly,BB just the opposite! My wife had a small acct. at BB to start with,so we had kept it.I remember ,in Bangkok, when we changed the acct name, after marriage, that they never had anything inside the bank posted in English like other banks and wondering if there was any underlying meaning to that. Now I really wonder!
I have heard of many people losing their ATM card in thai machines. It has nevered happened to me.So I will consider myself lucky so far and in the future,I will use the branch machines. Thanks for sharing your experience!Another helpful post for improving our living experience as expats!

I would have to agree. I have had worse experiences with Bangkok Bank.

I had an a/c with them in Phuket and some years back, was on holiday (?!) in Bangkok and the ATM card stopped working. At the time I had no passbook or alternative method of drawing cash with me. The branch in Bangkok, which had long queues was unhelpful and told me I had to go back to my own branch to resolve it, so I had to curtail my holiday and fly back to Phuket.

The branch in Patong sent me off to photocopy my passport and pay 150 baht for a new ATM card, no explanations. I think I concluded that you had to pay a fee every year. So that got closed.

Since then I have opened and still have a/c's with Kasikorn (formerly Thai Farmer), Ayuddya (the yellow one - has ATM's at most 7-11's) and now in Udon - Siam Commercial, as the latter are well represented in Big C and Charoensri shopping centres.

I also use a UK bank ATM card and am always worried that an ATM will retain that card and leave me with the daunting task of trying to get the bank in the Uk to send me a replacement out here!!!

Good point about using an ATM at a bank branch, in case of problems, but don't try and draw out of the deposit machine, as I once did. It doesn't work  :?

Based on my experiences working for a UK bank, the ATM would give you 3 chances of getting the PIN right, and would then retain the card, on the third attempt, which would later be destroyed, unless it was an a/c held at that branch. I don't know the policies of Thai banks.

I did have another bad experience in Phuket, when an ATM "threw a wobbly", whilst doing a withdrawal of 20K baht. After much deliberation, it returned my ATM card, gave me no money, but debited my a/c with the 20K, (plus 20 baht for using another bank's ATM). It didn't reverse the transaction shortly after, as is usual. That took some sorting out, visiting both my bank and the bank whose ATM it was. It took them about 3 weeks to replace my money. And they never did give me the 20 baht back for withdrawing at a different bank's ATM!!

It's a good idea to have some money accessible with another bank or a Visa card or a back up of some sort.

"It's a good idea to have some money accessible with another bank or a Visa card or a back up "

Words to live by in this country.

While in the U.S. this inormally sn't really a worry because the systems I've used are pretty reliable, and the one time I accidentally left my card in the machine, a clerk went and retireived it with a smile for me withing minutes.

personally i would'nt travel to thailand with-out at least 5 credit cards and 2 debit cards, i could just imagine what would happen if the hole in the wall took a fancy to the one and only card i had.
Still better than machines in uk where you have to double check that it's not a false front,or there is not a miniture camera stuck somewhere on the ATM put in place by certain robbing gangs that not only take your card and also have your PIN and your hard earnt cash.
i find bank of ayudhya good in udon. i also find a smile a little joking and a laugh sometimes helps when trying to sort problems in certain places, no use going straight in with all guns blazing.

I did a post "farang user friendly bank in Udon?" in general topics a few weeks back. I expressed my disappointments with Bkk. Bank in that post. I also followed up a few days later with a post about the bank I chose to open an account with: Siam Commercial Bank on Posri Rd.

ATM Banking

Post by FrazeeDK » March 5, 2006, 8:17 pm

sounds like a pile of bad luck there.. I've had my ATM card snatched by a machine only once and that was over 5 years ago down in Bangkok. The Bank's contact number was good and they told me to come down to their branch at a specific time and gave me my card back..
Since then, I've used a variety of different bank ATM's for cash withdrawls up here in Udon with Kasikorn Bank being the primary.. I've been making withdrawls here in Thailand using Stateside cards since 97 with only the one bad experience..

I hope your run of bad luck is over

Cheers
Dave
