Why was Aretha Franklin singing the wong words to the UK national anthem??????

I don't know why she was even picked if it was my choice it would have been Whitney Houston
not only does she sing very good she also looks very good but what do I know compared to all
brainiacs in Wash/DC who can not even keep there check books right they continue to bounce checks
maybe they don't know that 2+2 = 4 and not 2+2 = 4000

LA I did not know that I guess I am to easy in believing those super stars don't get them selfs screwed up

I watched all the ceromony and im sorry but they ( the yanks) just don't seem to be able to get the message. Big is not better they can never do a big ceromony like us lime'ys did you check out the fanfare what the **** was that , and the black ear muffs. let see em stand for 3-4 hours with a hat like there bearskin. How come they never sang the star bangled banner thought that was the yanks anthem.
If you want to see how a ceremony is conducted just look how we do it.

The British are experts in Pomp and Circumstance. They outdid the Chinese in the Hong Kong handover. British ceremonies are magnificent. They did Empire better than most countries too.

The song sung by Aretha has the music to God Save the Queen in the background; however, the words are American. I have forgotten the name of the U.S. version, but she was not trying to sing God Save the Queen. It is a bit like that Elvis hit, 'Love Me Tender'. The tune was 'Aura Lee, but the song and tune belongs to an individual now.

The United States has two official national anthems, 'The Stars and Stripes Forever' and 'God Bless America'. The latter version is associated with Kate Smith, and as LA can tell you, the city of brotherly love - Philadelphia.

For those that take these things seriously, Canada has two official national anthems as well. They are, 'O Canada', and the one I used to sing in grade school, 'God Save the Queen'. I much prefer the latter anthem, although a song entitled 'The Northwest Passage' would have been a splendid choice.

The old Soviet Union had a very stirring anthem, and for once France deserves some credit for their anthem.

Well, I do not know for sure but one would think it has to be the British who invented everything useful in the world such as television, civilisation, baseball (rounders), Canadian and American football (rugby), yorkshire pudding, rain, and so much more.

Most likely the song or the music is owned by no-one, it is in the public domain owing to British fair play and trying to improve the standard of living of people all around the world. 'Greensleeves', for instance, is said (rumoured) to be attributed to Henry VIII, but he seemed to forget about the benefits of copyright law and hardly made a farthing from it.

I wonder how good individual Henry would have faired amongst the maidens of Thailand?

Dolly Parton would have been a better choice than either Aretha or Whitney. She really represents what American men want to see. Dolly is the American dream personified ! 55555

I reckon they must have three. Growing up in the United States, we used to sing the Star Spangled Banner a lot.

You are correct about the two national anthems. I was trying to remember the name of the Star Spangled Banner, but forgot it and for some reason the Stars and Stripes Forever stuck in my mind. Is that a song, or part of one?

Anyway, Americans rather than Canadians should be answering these questions.

The others are just patriotic songs about America.

Stars and Stripes Forever is the american national march, composed by John Philip Sousa, arguably the greatest composer of military marches.
My personal favorite of american patriotic songs is "America the Beautiful". God Bless America is probably the most well known of american patriotic songs.

In public school we used to sing, 'From the Halls of Montezuma to the shores of Tripoli, we shall fight our countries battles on the land and on the sea....

There was another one about the Caissons (sp) go rolling along, and the old favourite, 'Onward Christian Soliders'. Stirring stuff. 55555

Easy to do Tilo

Nobody seems to know who wrote the music, but it has been recorded since the 18th cent.
The words may even go back to the 15th or 16th Cent.
The first verse seems to remain "constant" but other verses have been added/taken away over the years.
My fav verse was the one that had the line ..... "Rebellious Scots to crush" referred to by Prince Charles as "The politically incorrect second verse"

The American version "America" or "My country 'tis of thee" (why can't they speak proper like wot I does) was first performed at the inaugeration of George W Bush in 2001.

I remember a few years back, England playing a World Cup match against Leichenstein, and the same tune was used for both anthems with different words.

The Canadians of course (being Canadian), have to degrade it so much, that they actually have part of it sung in ...........
