Gawd don't you just love political correctness?
Re: Udon Map Friends
Ah the dreaded Money box, I will say this, udon Friends or to put it more correctly Friends of Udon, was an attempt to set up a charity , so that we rich farangs could assist the needy in Udon.
However as the person who set this up was unwilling to formulate this charity into an accountable entity, so that we all knew the money donated was going to a specific charity I declined to serve it any more.
That is not to say the charity was NOT giving the money to a charity, just that is was not accountable to that end. So much money could have been given but without the correct set-up I was dubious. \Thats your answer. up to you.

I am not denigrating donation boxes or collections for charity, but as it was mentioned earlier, transparent accountability is needed for me to participate!
I guess ,for some,it eases their conscience or it is an act of merit that they believe in!
I have always been one that likes to give directly when I perceive a real need in immediate proximity to where I am at the time.
I am always suspicious and possibly contemptous of solicitors of any kind!
I have some friendly acquaintances that do ''charitable work'',as they see it,I don't quite see it their way ,so I don't contribute to their cause!Which ,of course, puts more time and distance between their visits

Re: Udon Map Friends
Like BkkStan, I have a very difficult time giving freely to solicitors for charity organizations without some definite proof that the contributed funds are getting to the designated people. I joined the world's greatest philanthropy in 1993 and have given freely to this organization ever since. It is deeply appreciated by the recipients and leaves me with a feeling of complete satisfaction when I see the results of the efforts of this organization. Is it truly the "world's greatest philanthropy"... or is that only their motto? I'm not positive but I do know that they contribute OVER $100 million EVERY DAY to the relief of burned and crippled children - if you know of any organization that does more, I'd be interested to know who they are. =D> =D> =D>

Such is the nature of internet dating. How do you know the responses from Thai women are really Thai women? Noi from Loei could actually be Adekunle Abobowale, a 40 year-old bloke from Nigeria.old-timer wrote:i'm sorry, i think you have misunderstood what i meant,- when i joined before all the responses i got were from gay boys which i don't like, and i don't mean to be disrespectful to anyone who is a poof.beer monkey wrote:I wouldn't worry about it too much, as If its not i am sure there are plenty of other websites that specialise in Gay Friends/relationships old timer, just do a search i am sure you will come up trumps.old-timer wrote:A few years ago i joined udon map friends and the list of people regularly e mailed to me, who wanted to be my friend, were gay boys - is it still like that?

Re: Udon Map Friends
Ron, St Judes does a great job but I was referring to 'charity'... I believe you would find that St Judes has a desk or window in their lobby area with a sign "Cashier" overhead where you would be expected to pay for their great services. Granted, a lot (majority?) of their work is free, but not all, and not for every patient admitted. [-o<

Re: Udon Map Friends
I think you have made a mistake there Paul. Friends of Udon have not been up and running that long.Khun Paul wrote:Ah the dreaded Money box, I will say this, udon Friends or to put it more correctly Friends of Udon, was an attempt to set up a charity , so that we rich farangs could assist the needy in Udon.
With regards to it being an accountable charity. It is my understanding that from the very beginning a solicitor was employed to make it a legal accountable charity, but Thailand being Thailand, the solicitor has done hardly any work and any work that has been done has come up against a stone wall. You haven't said directly that monies collected for Friends of Udon will not be used for the charity, but the innuendo is there and I think Thorsten will be disappointed in your comment.
With regards to charity boxes. I'll specifically mention The Friends of Udon in Mojos. This box is placed on the table next to the free buffet on offer on a Wednesday. I have yet to see anyone place any money in it. Customers walk past it with plate loads of free food and cannot be bothered to put the odd baht in it, yet feet away is a photo of a young man who has severe multiple sclerosis, no parents, lives on a bare floor in a small hut and is naked. I hope the non-donators have a clear conscience while they are stuffing themselves.
Pakawala, I'd be interested to know if any of your charity's funds ever get to Thailand, because from what I have seen no one is helping disabled children in the Udon area.
Like Ron has previously mentioned, Bigwavedave gives a lot of his free time to Friends of Udon, I hope he will be able to provide some more information.
Re: Udon Map Friends
my sentiments also, as all i have ever noticed was lack of transparency, and administrative cost a bit beyond the necessary................THIS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH 'FRIENDS OF UDON', as beyond what was posted, i have no info/feedback on their efforts, but the fresh water things sounds very noble. though i find it strange, that has to be provided for people who have motorbikes, cell phones, tv/dvd players. apparently the families aren't taking care of their own. always scratched my head on that one, thinking running drinkable water would be my first priority. oh well, best of luck to any and all true charitable causes.I have always been one that likes to give directly when I perceive a real need in immediate proximity to where I am at the time.

my charitable baht is already accounted for............................sorry. as Stan, contributed direct, local, obvious need, with no other options but my charitable baht. 100 % accountability.
back to editing, you guys are fast while i think and type
an excellent place/charity, and Rock 103 fm radio station does an weekend charity drive, which is excellent. maybe a few have noticed my Hard Rock Cafe/Memphis denim jacket, if chilly out, it has a Ronald Mcdonald house emblem on it, which is the first time hard rock cafe allowed anything other than their own promo on the merchandise. i get a bit of self ego stroking when wearing that jacket, expensive F'g thing, 250 bucks, but given receipt for 75, as cost of jacket (overpriced hard rock marketing) but the rest to the Ronald McDonald House, which is available for families of out of town patients to spend time with the kids at the worst time. excellent stuff. and hats off to all involved with that hospital and charity to support the various venues of support, direct or indirect.St Judes Hospital for children with cancer in Memphis TN
