I get the impression that with all the excitement over the transfer window, there have been only a handful of big name transfers.
If football is, unfortunately, as much a business as sport, some things seem crazy to me.

Keane Spurs to Liverpool 19m 6 months later Back to Spurs 12m

Defoe Spurs to Pompey 9m 1 year later, back again 16m?

So on these transfers, it appears Spurs all square, Pompey laughing to tune of 7m and Liverpool down 7m.

Ok, not entirely sure of fees and some conditions.

But it does make me wonder if some of the people running these Clubs also work in Wall Street!

Fair point as far as Spurs is concerned, maybe Pompey too the way they're slipping. Change of managers an influence also. But I had in my mind also how Clubs can invest VAST sums in players who at one time are the 'bees knees' and then subsequently don't fit in for whatever reasons. Football is certainly a different world, because the ordinary man would surely want to be a lot more certain his investments in whatever were likely to pay off.

There just aren't any words to describe Newcastle's antics are there.
Sell the best goalkeeper in the league ......... ok I know we have Steve Harper who is "nearly" as good, but it's a forgone conclusion that within a week or two he will get injured and we have no backup.
Sell Charles N'Zogbia who will be a great player, and who would have been happy to stay, if, at some time during his three years or so there, he had been allowed to play in his proper position ........... he has spent so long playing out of position that the Official Fantasy Premier League lists him as a defender!!
Try to get rid of Obefeme Martins in exchange for that Carthorse Bent.
Buy Kevin Nolan, who it would be worth taking a risk with, if, we were sitting pretty in a comfortable mid table position, but, if he doesn't recapture his form of a couple of years back, he will be no help whatsoever ...... a big gamble.
Sign Lovencrands (or however you spell it), and then put him on for 10 mins of each game ...... and that's with 12 or 13 first teamers out injured. If the guy is that far down the "pecking order" or is so unfit why bother to sign him in the first place. You may as well throw one of the "kids" on for 10 mins.
Sign ....... eeeerrrrrrrrrrrr ........... oh never mind, lets just go with the sh***e that's got us in the mess we are in anyway.

And on a positive note ............. A year or so in the Championship will let Andy Carroll develop into a top class striker, which will be good for England (Not Newcastle as they will have sold him or exchanged him for Bobby Zamora or Victor Anichaybee or someone).
Shay Given will wan't to come back at the end of the season if by some fluke we manage to stay up. The guy is going to be bored senseless playing behind a "semi reasonable" defence. He's had 12 years of "Adrenoline Overload" week after week, waiting to see what disaster the guys in front of him can produce.

I must admit Statto I have not seen Newcastle play much this season - & maybe some would say lucky me on that front!!
I did watch the Sunderland game though & under whelmed would be the first thought. I thought both defences were pretty dam awful, but at least Sunderland had a strike force who seemed to know where the goal was. Same as your summary I don't think the transfer moves have done much to improve the team. Maybe if Nolan has a new lease of life & can protect (i.e. nullify the need for) the back 4 & score every other game then they can move upwards.....

The amazing thing about the game at the weekend was ........... camara pans onto crowd as Ameobe prepares to take the spot kick ....... and there were still about 50% facing the pitch ...... I had my head in my hands, and my back to the TV well before he took the kick........ may be they all closed their eyes after the camera finished filming them.

Bob, If you haven't seen much of Newcastle playing this season, that's perfectly understandable ...... I've watched nearly every game UBC permitting, and I havn't seen them play much either
I've now cancelled my UBC contract, and with a bit of luck the car will break down, and I won't be able to get into town to watch the game on Saturday.

Slightly off topic I know, but has anyone noticed that the "referral" system has now been used in the Cricket test between West Indies and England. Each team has Two Referrals per innings, where the umpires descision is questioned, and subsequently checked by TV footage. It's already been used in Tennis ..... now Cricket ..... so how long before each manager gets two chances to have a referees descision checked by TV?

Newcastle manager Joe Kinnear has been taken to hospital after feeling unwell.

The 62-year-old was examined by the club's medical staff ahead of the game at West Brom and admitted "as a precautionary measure".

Kinnear remains under observation and assistant Chris Hughton will take charge of Newcastle at The Hawthorns.

Kinnear suffered a mild heart attack in March 1999 during his time as Wimbledon boss and later stood down from his post because of ill-health.
