Vien Viaing is the place that is really taking off.
Was discovered by the crusty backpacker types, gap year students, and Kensington and Chelsea Trustafarians.
Now unreformed mongers have arrived in chartered minivans.

A friend of mine had a Brazilian....he met her in Rio whilst he was doing some work related project, not bad either he told me.

And what about if you got a full head of grey hair and are European..?
Plenty of Thai Gals love a slap head too ya know...but maybe not a 'Bobby Charlton' though.

What you thinking izzy...sampling some of the exotic fruits maybe.?

The new streamlined smooth Bringer of Doom and Gloom has probably taken a long boat across the river this very night.

Lock up your Grandmas, good folk of Lay Os.

Laos, is a great big new adventure for sure, the girls are cute and proper. If it were me I would be a good boy and just visit be nice and play by the rules. I think the Gov in Laos could turn on you and make your life hell just to make an example, just my gut feeling and nothing to back this up with.

I love the place and the people but I still keep thinking that I am going to get burnt for something stupid, I suppose just a bit of paranoia. I a nothing but a good boy when traveling there. My two cents have fun.

small country, relatively small expat population.. Any Expat with a LW or LGF would risk their parts if dithering around in Vientiane...It seems everyone up there's related to one another and ill news travels at the speed of light.. It's a very insular city so you can bet the long term expats are known all about town..

On the original question of the string.. Certainly there are working girls up there.. You can go to most of the popular bars to include the thatched roof pubs along the Mekong and see a variety of nice looking girls arrive on the M/C's and sit in the pub until somone "interested" sits and engages them in conversation.. There are others that are out and about on foot later in the evenings..

Now, not to forget, Lao still is a Communist country with EXTREMELY strict "no-frat" and anti-drug rules.. Of course, the laws concerning this are selectively enforced and few folks get rousted by the "BIG's" (Boy's in green) up there.. However, when a Farang doing the horizontal tango or indulging in illicit drugs is targeted, it can be a bad bad time with fines up to $5000, getting stuck in the kook incommunicado (they're known for NOT telling embassies citizens are incarcerated for a few weeks) or perhaps just a quick lightening of your wallet and a swift trip to the bridge and kicked out into Thailand...

OK, all said though, I knew of many short-term visitors who engaged in such activities and never personally knew anyone who got busted.. none-the-less, "Buyer Beware!!"

You are not just whisling dixie. The Laos girls grapevine also takes deight in dobbing you in. My next door neighbour, (Laos), got caught. Went "shopping" and his wife got a phone call, "Do you know hubby is drinking and playing pool with another lady in the next village?" When he got home the shouting didn't stop for 2 hours.

In Vinetiane the watering holes Kob Jai Der and Borpenyang appear to be the older expat pick up joints - just hearsay, I wouldn't know! You don't have to wait long though until someone says "hello". Younger tourists head for the discos.

Excerpt from the state dept's advisory pages (below) is a bit of a "buzzkill". Can't be just rumor.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
RELATIONSHIPS WITH LAO CITIZENS: Lao law prohibits sexual contact between foreign citizens and Lao nationals except when the two parties have been married in accordance with Lao Family Law. Any foreigner who enters into a sexual relationship with a Lao national risks being interrogated, detained, arrested, or fined. Lao police have confiscated passports and imposed fines of up to $5000 on foreigners who enter into unapproved sexual relationships. The Lao party to the relationship may also be jailed without trial. Foreigners are not permitted to invite Lao nationals of the opposite sex to their hotel rooms; police may raid hotel rooms without notice or consent.

Foreign citizens intending to marry Lao nationals are required by Lao law to obtain prior permission from the Lao Government. The formal application process can take as long as a year. American citizens may obtain information about these requirements from the U.S. Embassy in Vientiane. The Lao Government will not issue a marriage certificate unless the correct procedures are followed. Any attempt to circumvent Lao regulations may result in arrest, imprisonment, a fine of $500-$5000, and deportation. A foreigner who cohabits with or enters into a close relationship with a Lao national may be accused by Lao authorities of entering into an illegal marriage and be subject to these same penalties. A foreign citizen who wishes to become engaged to a Lao national is required to obtain prior permission from the chief of the village where the Lao national resides. Failure to obtain prior permission can result in a fine of $500-$5000. Lao police may impose a large fine on a foreign citizen a few days after he or she holds an engagement ceremony with a Lao citizen based on the suspicion that the couple subsequently had sexual relations out of wedlock.

theres quite a few Laos gals staffing the local thai knocking shops across the river ,they seem to come and go quite easilly despite the road checks along the river road ,their primary concern seems to be to amass as many cellphones as possible while on a tour of duty .

I recently heard of a young aussie bloke who decided to nip across the river at night without applying for a visa. It wasnt long before he was picked up and in the Laos monkeyhouse in deep trouble, how stupid can a guy be. it will cost him more than a tourist visa.

And the bonus question this morning, what is the etymology of "poontang"? This word was slang
in the states when I was just a kid? I always assumed in was a throwback from the vietnam era? Initial
research shows it's origin is actually French? They have an eerily similar word which means working girl?
Or, did all that French colonization in SEA leave some vocabulary in the area? Maybe some of the old-timers
have some insight into this? I said this once to a Thai girl in jest and I swear she understood? Does it also
have a shared place in the Thai language? Tang means "path", I initially thought "honey path"? Do we have
any language experts here, I hesitate to use the term. And Yes, I also have too much free-time.
