My wifes father has cancer. We found out the day before we left in Oct. 05. We have been dealing with it since. My wife stayed in Udon and I came home. Been going back and forth every month at least, leave of absence from work and so on. He is getting better now. Really missed everyone here and the board in general but didnt want to post a bunch of crap when my head wasnt together. Things are looking good now and I will be back in May.

yo Dave, what up. glad to hear from you and nice to hear dad's getting better.
'odd occasion', lol. i give him 75 baht an hour, down from 1st time i used him @ 100 bph. his name is Samai, # 068566725, usually hangs at the karin hotel entrance. you can't have him on forum meeting nights starting in june or we'll have to both use him, lol.Hi LA, do you have the number of your personal taxi driver? I wouldn't mind hiring him on the odd occasion if I've had one too many drinks

Next meeting on the 8th April - thinking of trying the Kakadu Cafe/Bar
It is located (ow will be soon) almost opposite the City Lodge and a stagger away from the Saloon Pub which could be an emergency backup:)
The kakadu is a sponsor of the forum so it should not be a problem and is another establishment to tick off our list of sponsors visited

With only about 10 days to go before the next meeting on the 8th April - I have still not managed to see the newly re-located (apparently) Kakadu Cafe Bar near to City Lodge. I have been in the area many times and it may well be staring at me in the face but I can't see it !
Anyone seen (or been) there?

It is actually there but has the shutters are down. I think the owners sill have the builders in.Anyone seen (or been) there?
They were supposed to be up and running a few weeks ago; I guess that we may have to shelve our plans until later.
So I guess it's back to the drawing board again.
What about the newly relocated Fuzzy Ken's Bar opposite the Aussie Pub? Or the Koala Bar?

Well I have now located the Kakadu pub and today there was a huge flurry of activity inside.
There were masses of workmen in there and they were extremely busy - there were also many chairs and tables inside too so my guess is that they will certainly be opening soon.
I will keep an eye on its progress and if I see anyone inside next time I will ask when they will be actually opening - so I know whether we need to change the meeting venue or not. At least it was moved to the second Saturday in April coz the first would have certainly required a venue change.
Incidentally its on the corner of the road where the Irish Clock is. If you walk from the Irish Clock to City Lodge you will pass kakadu as it is literally on the corner. - Easy !

yes, made the same observation myself, also notice the new place next door must be doing something right. quite busy every nite, ouch. my original thought was bad location, but i may be wrong. also, the place just past those 2, on corner, that was finished a while back, all wood, fairly well done, w/seating in and out, is being redone again it appears. what's up with that?I know many bars in town are deathly quiet but the Koala bar is in a league of it's own! I drive by there often & it really is like a morgue

It is called Zap Steak Buffet, very good selection of both Farang and Thai dishes plus many BBQ items, 79 baht, all you can eat, and no, it's not one of those cook it yourself places. They do all the grilling to order. Plus deserts, including ice cream, and sometimes Tiger, Cheers, and San Miquel girls.

April Monthly Meeting
The morning after the night before:
Want a great hangover cure? Don't drink Chang the night before - always works LOL
April's monthly get together was held last night at Kakadu Cafe in Udon.
As those who went found out, it really is smaller than my living room and I think we reached the point where every chair and table was taken last night - which wasn't that difficult to acheive LOL
I got there early (ensuring I got a seat ) and was immediately introduced to Dave aka FrazeeDK. A very nice chap who lives in Vientienne but comes to udon at weekends. Slowly but surely the room began to fill and the following people made an appearance during the night. FrazeeDK(and wife), Pop Pops, Lee, Bangsaen Girl, Banpaeng(and wife), Bigtilly, Prenders888, TC, Wombat, Dakoda(and wife) Jimbo and of course myself.
Well we sat there - all drinking only water as the beer was too expensive (compared to the night market) and we each took it in turns to recite our favourite passages from the bible and sing our favourite hymns before sending the younger members off to their beds at 9pm sharp.
Those that remained discussed where we should go to next and we couldn't decide whether to call in for the late night church service or stop by one of the nightclubs and distribute some charity clothing to the dancers as they didn't seem to have many clothes and we didn't want some people to think that dancing in a skimpy bikini was 'erotic' - for some reason ?
We went on to another venue after Kakadu - but popular opinion on this forum seems that people aren't interested to know about late night events - so I will not bore you.
Of course - thats not what really happened (sorry to disappoint you)
Due to the size of the venue it was impossible not to bump into everyone attending and most people did the rounds and there was plenty of chair swapping. It was nice to finally meet banpaeng and also Prenders888.
I personally felt that the bar was lacking a certain ambiance - I dont know what it was, but it felt like a room with tables and chairs in it - not much else. Small splinter groups set up at each table and I think i must have sat at every table last night as I went talking to different people.
At about 10pm people started drifting away until there were about 6 of us left - mostly sat at the bar by now. Pop pops being one of them who disappeared for 10 or 15 minutes and we thought he had gone home. Suddenly he appeared from the bathroom with a smug grin on his face but didn't say anything.
Now I know where the term 'weapon of mass destruction' comes from !. I almost keeled over when I went in there 10 minutes after him
I think most people left about 1130. A second venue was discounted as it seemed people just wanted to drift home. Myself I went to find a restaurant !
It was a nice opening boost to the owner of kakadu to have the meeting in her bar and will ensure that plenty of people know the place now. I am sure we all wish her continued success. I think she would ensure success if her prices were just a little cheaper. I know its the going rate in that area for alcohol but most other venues have a little more to offer facilty wise and I am sure the coming weeks will tell, after the initial interest in a new place. Having said that - the owner does go out of her way to make you feel welcome and constantly asked if we were ok and comfortable - this is the one unique thing missing in other places - so could be the one ingredient that ensures her success.
Next month the meeting will be on Saturday 6th May. The venue is yet to be decided. I think we need somewhere with a lively atmosphere for a change and of course some eye candy too.
The meetings have settled into a very pleasant monthly affair and have a regular group attends now with the very welcome addition of people passing through who were once just a name on the forum but now we have met and can put a 'face to a name'.
look forward to seeing everyone next month - Venue suggestions please.
Regards
Paul
