I seem to end up passing through Udon every 4 or 5 months and always have breakfast at Irish Clock - and it is always excellent.

The evening meals are also very good and excellent value compared to what we get in Bangkok.

The atmosphere is good and the publican is both friendly and a good source of local info.

Overall, a very nice spot.

Yes, I noticed the name when approving the initial post. I think it's a case of we are watching. ;)

I must admit though I went to the Irish clock once -( whilst the wife is spending my good hard wages in the market), the staff are very polite and it does feel like a hospitable place ,-

The Clock is good but try the City Lodge for breakfast. It's very good also and might just have the edge over the Clock.

From trying the City Lodge twice, I will say it in no way will come close to the Clock.

I would say the same about the Clock. A few years back the clock was good when old Tom had it. Now we can't complain about the City Lodge. Everyone to thier own liking.

the Irish Clock has it all, great hosts, food, pricing, accomodations, gets my vote and baht all the time when in that Brit mood, or not.

the City Lodge, been there a few times, can't see any reason to return. didn't do anything for me except, wish i had gone to the Clock instead.

Ditto. One of my most favorite places in Udon.

I never tire of The Clock, and I can't say enough about Steve and Mali.

Englishmans Retreat breakfast
that did look good, and i'm not a big breakfast person, especially that damn brit bean thing, tho i did see a hashbrown there, nice touch. tho i would have to add 60-80 baht for fuel to drive way out there. still too lazy and cheap for that. plus if going there, my car has auto pilot at TJ's. sorry Glyn. but that 1st u-turn, and i've lost control of the steering.

good luck to all and your offerings. breakfast is a personal thing, mine at home, or if staying at the Clock. since TJ's price increase for brekkie (overdue, and still competitive), i no longer buy it out, sorry all. i do enjoy my lunches out though, if not for parking and traffic, would probably do more dinners out, but rare. you all know where i get that meat pie, and an occasion cottage pie, since mentioned, also a filling meal. not as much work and quality beef as pie, but damn tasty and filling (ground beef). those lg tigers wash it down well.

enjoy all.

Never tried salad there. But when eating in town by myself, usually the Clock. English breakfast always an A, and evenings i try the thai dishes, always good too (especially Pad thai).
