BRITAIN IS WOOLLY OVER IMMIGRATION

Post by arjay » April 26, 2009, 9:03 am

From the Sunday Express:
http://www.express.co.uk/posts/view/971 ... migration-
BRITAIN IS WOOLLY OVER IMMIGRATION

I wonder whether our ineffective Immigration Minister Phil Woolas was listening last week when Mayor of Calais Natacha Bouchart the gave him a lesson on how to control immigration.

With deadly accuracy, Calais’s mayor pinpointed the root of the problem. She furiously claimed that Britain’s policy of handing out “enormous” state benefits to asylum seekers is predominately to blame for the thousands of foreigners trying to clamber aboard UK-bound lorries and trains in Calais every day.

Commenting that “requesting asylum is easier with them” (the British), Mme Bouchart pointed out the stark contrast between the French and British approach to asylum seekers. In France they are usually given nothing until their claim to receive benefits has been accepted and that can often take a minimum of six months.

Asylum seekers coming to Britain can claim benefits as soon as their claim is lodged. This means that single asylum seekers can receive up to £42.16 a week and married couples up to £66.13 a week almost immediately. In addition to the cash support they can claim free NHS care, free dental and eye care, free housing and free education for their children.

Mme Bouchart points out that if you compare the extravagance of those benefits with the fact that the average Eritrean earns around £135 a year it is obvious why so many people are desperate to get to Britain. Moreover, the situation is deteriorating rapidly. The number of migrants trying to reach Britain by stowing away on lorries and trains at Calais has doubled over the past year.

THE FEEBLE response from Phil Woolas was: “If someone is genuinely fleeing persecution they should claim asylum in the first safe country they reach. It is not right that individuals attempt to use the asylum system as a cover for economic migration.”

It isn’t right, Phil, but that is what those who are not genuine asylum seekers are doing. They know the rules as well as you do but they are ruthlessly ignoring them. They don’t want to claim asylum in the first safe country they reach, they want to claim asylum in the country that has the most generous benefits system and that’s Britain.

Britons are kind, generous, people who are willing to help genuine asylum seekers but they don’t take kindly to being made fools of, especially when times are tough.

We must toughen up our immigration system and border control and we must listen to Mme Bouchart’s call for an urgent “change in attitude”. We must adopt the French approach and only give benefits to asylum seekers after we have established their right to receive them.

The mayor of Calais is right, we need to re appropriate public money to run detention centres for people that claim political asylum instead of giving them handouts. It must cost the French and the EU lots of money to control these people on the French side and it's our fault for being so tolerant.

Mmm she only just noticed...!!...Tell the rest of the UK something we don't know....they don't listen to their own population so they not going to listen to a french women..(who is talking straight)..

They do very well some time after they arrive....the latest mobile phones(possibly brought with food vouchers..lol), high street fashion, Audi or BMW cars(no license and usually no insurance), nice pushchairs for the many children, cash on the hip and a roof over their head that no doubt contains a flat screen TV,....some turn to crime, rape, muggings,,dealing, robbery etc to subsidize their meager handouts i presume.

This situation really narks {irritates) me my wife is Thai(bless her) she has now been in England for three years on A NON PUBLIC FUNDING VISA that means she does not get a penny. She was refused to apply for
INDEFINITE LEAVE TO REMAIN after 2 years because she had not passed her ESOLS and was granted another 2 years NPFV until she had passed. Luckily she has now passed up to level 2 and we can now apply £820 FOR HER AND £50 for my step daughter.Yet people are walking into the country and getting money straight away. There is something wrong somewhere

You have my genuine sympathy. The lady and her daughter have legally entered the country and are penalised for it, I can't see any sense in that.

Same in the US. It's the globalist way of doing things. Penalize those who follow the rules and hold themselves accountable. Give away everything to those who break the law or play stupid.

Sorry Aa, but that is nonsense.

Do some research, instead of relying on urban myths.

Some seventy years ago, the English Channel surely saved the UK from, at the time, those nasty Germans. Now, another threat.I say it’s time to have it widened and suggest opening the stopcocks in the Channel Tunnel, sawing off Kent (sorry Kentish Men) at its’ boundary with Surrey and towing it westward to reattach to the country, say next to Cornwall. Not so bad. And think of the money to be saved not having to upgrade flood defences, or build a new Thames Barrier. ‘You know it makes sense.’

Ok, the subject matter will tend to send me a bit crazy at times. So immigration has been ‘hot’ for years, now more to the fore in this difficult financial climate, when people start to ask ‘why doesn’t my government look after ME first’. It cannot be easy sorting out genuine applicants from scroungers. You hear of events in e.g. Africa and Burma where people literally are in fear of their lives. I was an administrator in my working life, but sorting out problems like this every day must be demanding, time consuming and expensive. But there are immigrants who do study, contribute in the UK or perhaps take their newly-acquired professional skills (e.g. doctor) back to their country of origin. It’s a case of sorting the chaff from the wheat.

But can someone answer why so many desperate to get TO THE UK? (Because their relatives are already there? :-k ) Doesn’t being part of the European Community mean that the same benefits are on offer on the European mainline? Or does the UK fall over itself to do more in many respects? It can’t be the better weather which is attracting them!

I think the topic 'Impact of Immigration on Europe' partly duplicates this topic.
