Ants

Post by wazza » April 22, 2009, 2:03 pm

Just got a new pup and he stays outside in a concrete run etc, now being bitten alive , , some small cracks in the concrete next to the house and these F'n ants bite him whilst sleeping / resting.

Anyone know any environmentally friendly pest control companies in Udon etc.......

I know, there is no F in ants !!

My missus uses dish washing liquid in water, works surpisingly well and shouldn't worry the dog.

Put some ant repellant chalk round the dogs run, ants don't like the chalk and won't cross it. We've cured many ant problems with it

These pesky mites are a real problem. Just a few crumbs on the floor, or a fly I executed, and in no time,
a whole army descends on it.
Once,I sprinkled talc powder down, It actually killed them.I sat there with pleasure watching them die.
Dare not leave any food open.....They'll find it!

I don't know how to permanantly get rid of them. But Amdro will work for a while, will kill the nest but after a bit new ones will move in. Our dogs food dishes we set in a tray of water the ants won't cross the water to get to the food otherwise we get a thousand or so ants in the dogs food and they can't eat.

Yes, that's how we do it as well. Our doghouse is on small legs, and each leg is standing in a cup of water making it impossible for the ants to enter the doghouse. Dogfood is in the doghouse and that's where the dog sleeps as well, works perfectly as long as you make sure those cups remain filled with water.

If we find ants we use dishwashing soapwater, definitely makes them feel very uncomfortable. Chalk also works, just draw a circle around any object you don't want to be touched, if you renew the chalk regularly they really don't cross it, but in the end the only method which really keeps them away is placing anything in a cup of water.

We have been havning some guys come and spray in and around the house (thay come every 2-3month) about 3000bath.

Else in tesco you can buy some (can't remember the name) but it is small yellow things you put in the green box (that comes with the set) Ants take these in there house and it kills them over night or so. Think it is around 60baht.

PS
about ants in the dog food........... give your dog his food, after 30-40min take it back (emty/full or 1/2) If not emty do the same at evening time.
That's the way to feed your dog (have a heard)....... and keep the ants away...............

Wondering the same. Thought he meant enchilada (w/guacamole).

"There are two species of echidna (spiny anteater) that lay eggs: The long-nosed and short-nosed, both from Australia". Fitting for the topic.

Definition of an Echidna from Wikipedia (mythology):

the goddess fierce Echidna who is half a nymph with glancing eyes and fair cheeks, and half again a huge snake, great and awful, with speckled skin, eating raw flesh beneath the secret parts of the holy earth. And there she has a cave deep down under a hollow rock far from the deathless gods and mortal men. There, then, did the gods appoint her a glorious house to dwell in: and she keeps guard in Arima beneath the earth, grim Echidna, a nymph who dies not nor grows old all her days. (Theogony, 295-305)

Sounds exciting, but personally I'd rather deal with the ants.

Actually that Wikipedia article on Echidna is from ancient Greek mythology, about 700 BC, nothing to do with the Bible. i was going to suggest Boric Acid for the ant problem, I used it in the States and it killed off the whole colony. However with the proliferation of ants around here that would probably be like emptying the ocean with a thimble. So the previous suggestions of deterrance schemes probably would work best.

When you go to the loo and drop your shorts, make sure there are no ants on the floor that can get into your shorts. Found out the painful way today.
