Staff row over Thai Lady Boys show

Hippodrome staff with their badges
A GENDER row has hit the Hippodrome in Great Yarmouth over a two-day visit by the all-male Thai cabaret show - the Lady Boys of Bangkok - later this month.

Female staff have threatened to walk-out of the historic building unless they are allowed to wear identification that they are NOT Lady Boys.

Guaranteeing: “You'll never look at the opposite sex the same way again” the Lady Boys of Bangkok cabaret - performed by 16 of the world's most beautiful showgirls (who just happen to be men!) - is coming to the Hippodrome on May 27 and 28.

With its blend of fun and music the show glides from disco floor to the Broadway musical stage and features tributes to Katy Perry, Whitney Houston, Girls Aloud and Kylie Minogue.

Ruth Patterson, who has worked at the Hippodrome for the past five years said she had heard when the show opened at Brighton a number of the women staff were asked if they were “real” women.

She said: “Because it is a cabaret being performed in a real party atmosphere, some people just get carried away with the whole thing. I certainly don't want people in Great Yarmouth asking me if I'm a Lady Boy! Although I am jealous of their fabulous figures.”

The female staff threatened to walk out after the management refused to allow them to wear T-shirts bearing the slogan “I am NOT a Lady Boy,” saying it was contrary to the Hippodrome's staff dress-code.

The Hippodrome's owner, Peter Jay, said there had never been an incident like this in the circus building's 106 year history.

The staff will now be offered badges bearing the phrase “I am 100% woman”.

THE "REAL" THING: The Lady Boys of Bangkok
Tickets are now on sale priced at £20 and £18. Book online at www.hippodromecircus.co.uk or call the box office on 01493 844172.

Pictured are Ruth Patterson (left) and Zoë Fausto showing their 100pc woman badges.

I fail to see the funny side of it, O-T. Norfolk and Suffolk women are quizzed about their gender all the time so I think it's a sterling idea, especially if you're a Suffolk gal who hangs around the Yarmouth docks.

I always thought GY was in Suffolk but it's in Norfolk, no wonder I couldn't find it (somewhere at the end of the A143 isn't it?)

Back on topic, that would be a tough choice, would you tap off with a Norfolk gal or take your chances at a show with an oriental chap in a dress? And who would be more satisfying?

Affirmative, O-T - receiving this one loud and clear. Personally, I think Norfolk girls would be better as they're built for comfort not speed. Do you think they're aware of the irony of wearing the tee shirt? Norfolk and Suffolk gals ain't that clever, are they.

Which one, the rusty Sheriff's badge? You can see plenty of them for free if you see the BKK Ladyboys currently touring Great Yarmouth - just don't ask the same of those Norfolk gals (marginally better looking than the talent in Abergavenny).

Yes, how ironic would that be as I have no such t-shirt and I don't bat for the other side. How did you leap from the ladies of Great Yarmouth and Ladyboys of Bangkok to my sexual orientation? I can only suppose you've been out drinking around the Udon bazaars again and come home to play on your PC. Never mind, maybe you could wear a t-shirt with, 'I'm a daft old sausage who thinks he's Irish', not very ironic, though.

Westie - that's what Saint calls me (amongst other things).

Moving on, the Ladyboys of Bangkok are arriving in Fareham on the 28th July, I might pop down and see how the ladies of Hampshire react to them. Hampshire girls are definitely more attractive than the Lady boys of BKK, there won't be many insecure women at that venue.

Of course, the Australian cricketers are touring the British Isles this year as well as the Ladyboys of Bangkok - does that mean they're batting for the same side? Will the ladies of Great Yarmouth sport t-shirts with the slogan, 'I'm a real cricketer'? And who wears the nicer lipstick, Norfolk gals or Australian cricketers?
