Can You Dig It Dug.?
I really enjoyed the postings and pictures this year's Miss Nong Khai Beauty contest. Hard to believe how things have changed since I last attended the beauty contest 35 years ago. I guess I'm in for a few surprises when I return in January.
I did notice that this was billed as "The first ever Miss Nong Khai was hosted on April 17th 2006 at The Meeting Place in Nong Khai, in association with Pattaya Secrets." I did attend a beauty contest in 1972.
Back then it was an exciting nite for sure. The Lao had closed the border every night at sunset because of security problems in Laos. We had to return to Laos later that night in a long boat with no running lights. We made it OK but the boat behind us didn't and was rammed by another boat. The passenger was killed.
On the road to Vientianne there were numerous road blocks manned by either the National Police or the Army. We came upon on lone soldier walking casually along the road. When we got abreast of him he turned and pointed the rifle as he yelled "yut" (stop) My thai friend heard the soldier say "shoot" (we will never know what was yelled). My friend jammed on the brake and fell to the floor as the car went spinning down the road. When I picked my self up there were 8 or more soldiers surrounding the car with rifles pointed at up. Bor pen yang dork!!
I am attaching some pictures but must apologize for the poor condition of the photos - but if anyone can identify this as anything other than a Miss Nongkhai Beauty beauty contest please let me know.

One fun thing about the Thai's, they love beauty contests.Every year there is a beauty contest held at Loy Krathong time at the riverside temple near Nong Teen Park.
This was The Miss Nongkhai Beauty contest. Even the Governor was there.
I don't know the location nor do I remember the date. and the year was either 1972 or 1973. It was also in the spring because the Lao Government was worried about a spring offensive on Vientianne. Hence, the curfew, closing the boarder at night, and Road blocks of the road to Vte.
I'm attaching several more blurry pictures. Does anyone recognize the building in the first picture ? The contest was in the back of this building.
The audience got to vote by giving balloons to their favorite contestant The bigger the balloon the more votes it represented. We had a $25 balloon but couldn't stay for the vote.
I personally have never seen the value of beauty contests. So few are able to participate and I don't understand the message!
In thailand ,they start the kids out very very young, dressing them up with makeup and fancy hairdos. They develop a large group of exhibitional behavior that makes me think of future go go dancers!
