Happy 4th of July to all the yanks!
Have you ever wondered what happened to the 56 men who signed the Declaration of Independence?
Five signers were captured by the British as traitors,and tortured before they died.
Twelve had their homes ransacked and burned.
Two lost their sons serving in the Revolutionary Army; another had two sons captured.
Nine of the 56 fought and died from wounds or hardships of the Revolutionary War.
They signed and they pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor.
What kind of men were they?
Twenty-four were lawyers and jurists.
Eleven were merchants,
Nine were farmers and large plantation owners; men of means, well educated, but they signed the Declaration of Independence knowing full well that the penalty would be death if they were captured.
Carter Braxton of Virginia, a wealthy planter and trader, saw his ships swept from the seas by the British Navy. He sold his home and properties to pay his debts, and died in rags.
Thomas McKeam was so hounded by the British that he was forced to move his family almost constantly. He served in the Congress without pay, and his family was kept in hiding. His possessions were taken from him, and poverty was his reward.
Vandals or soldiers looted the properties of Dillery, Hall, Clymer, Walton, Gwinnett, Heyward, Ruttledge, and Middleton.
At the battle of Yorktown, Thomas Nelson, Jr., noted that the British General Cornwallis had taken over the Nelson home for his headquarters. He quietly urged General George Washington to open fire. The home was destroyed, and Nelson died bankrupt.
Francis Lewis had his home and properties destroyed. The enemy jailed his wife, and she died within a few months.
John Hart was driven from his wife's bedside as she was dying. Their 13 children fled for their lives. His fields and his gristmill were laid to waste. For more than a year he lived in forests and caves, returning home to find his wife dead and his children vanished.
So, take a few minutes while enjoying your 4th of July holiday and silently thank these patriots. It's not much to ask for the price they paid.
Remember: freedom is never free!

I would suspect that the 42 who escapade with their lives (plus many others who just happened to be living in the wrong area) should have been eternally grateful that Bush & Rumsfeld were not in charge of Britain & dealing with these terrorists....

I will agree that there were many atrocities and genocide were committed by the white man in the name of expanding "civilization". But, isn't that a little off topic?

First of all, in the time period of the above-mentioned atrocities, the American continent was under British rule. We didn’t kick your sorry butts out until the late 1700’s.

My quote used the first paragraph to save space, however it is illustrative that the last use of the text (yours) is clearly the manipulator of the quoted text and you have exposed your own political bias by doing so and I thank you enlightening me to that.
However, if we're talking horses for courses one of the most flagrant atrocities committed by Americans was of course the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nakasaki.

I love these stories. I can read them in the context of the their time and it warms my heart. Great men did bold and honorable things and suffered greatly for my freedom. God bless America, Happy 4th =D>

I quite like the yanks , I only have two issues with them - why does it it take them so long to elect a president? (super tuesday and all that Zzz..) and they do need to learn how to brew a decent pint of beer, apart from that their alright

Our American cousins can brew beer, fine cask conditioned ales.
The Lost Abbey Brewery bought over their beers to much aclaim at the Great British Beer Festival last August at Londons Earl's Court.

Uncle Tom, people like Astana are, as you say, the ones we must feel sorry for, as they always try to bring down special days or events for everyone. But as this is a free forum, with certain limitations, the moderators must allow desent, within the agreed limitations. I cannot wait for Guy Fawkes Day, November 5, to see what major complaint Astana will thrust upon us for that special Brithish holiday.

The American 7th Fleet is in town here in Perth at the moment for a few days R+R. Businesses and individuals all over town are putting on Thanks Giving Feasts to help the guys and girls celebrate their special day.
