Yes. Churchill, FDR and many others were very aware of the Japanese fleet's movements in the Pacific and the planned attack on Pearl Harbor.

You can choose to be critical, but I believe the public needs to be aware that the State is the enemy, expecially in the conduct of war as a politial means. So I applaud Astana's testimonial as to the tyranny of the State, the U.S. or other. The U.S. Revolutionary War was deadly, destructive and brutal as were all following U.S. military actions.

Lets be fair - all contested revolutions are deadly, destructive and brutal - whether American or not. Lets just be thankful that Britain and USA did not spend the next 200 years killing one another, or i think the world would be a poorer place.

i too like K E have no axe to grind with our colonial cousins , so who ever you are , and where ever you are , have a great time . take comfort in the fact that you do have a national day that you are free to celebrate in whichever way you choose , which im affraid is not the case for england !!! our national day is st georges day , and in some areas it cannot be celebrated without some P C idiot bleeting on about it being predudice , and our national flag , cannot be waved at football matches and the like , again without someone protesting . incidently guy fawkes day is not a national holiday , its more a day of mourning , that he failed in his quest to remove our country of a tyrinical government , and britain has been suffering ever since . so , you yanks enjoy your day , and long may you be free to do so . =D> =D>

I, like some others who post on this forum, despair at lies & half-truths being spread with blatant political bias.
The "quotation" about the Founding Fathers is another of those pieces.
I have no issue with wishing every American a very, very happy Independence Day.
I also hope that they remember the thoughts & ideals that these men intended to instil in the Constitution they created. Equality, Opportunity and Fairness. Not Greed, Corruption and Prejudice...

as a Yank, i'd like to thank the French, for their fine contribution to USA independence, along with a few others, spanish, dutch, all taking advantage at the time, for a reduced British empire. gov'ts will never learn, you can't fight 2 fronts, let alone multiply 2 fronts. just glad you Brits thought homeland interest were more important. without considerable help, independence would of been lost.

thanks, and very happy, as Saint mentioned, no long term animosity toward each other, and close allies against couple other world threats. though not a big fan of current political decisions and the world situation the past couple decades, i'm glad i grew up when i did, and saw actually people making a difference in gov't decisions, last one, vietnam war, why there, if not for the good, then get out. since then, not much free press, or free expression to influence the right things USA has involved itself in the past few decades, especially present situations around the world, ....this is the debates section,.... but these are just a few of my opinions, which ..............i won't debate, just express.

for those non yanks and yanks as myself, who confess to a bit of ignorance, couple links below about American history, and little world history up to what we should already know, since sadly, the world wars many experienced 1st hand, and the rest is history, we should know.

USA history, though a bit was going on right before that influence a lot before July 4th. as we all realize, them damn wars are expensive, in people and money lost fighting. thankfully during and after the independence, the founding fathers, did the right things, especially getting the Bill of Rights passed and putting checks and balances in place, so eventually, things are almost democratic. simply refining what we learned from Brit and French law.

Have you ever wondered what happened to the 56 men who signed the Declaration of Independence?

Five signers were captured by the British as traitors,and tortured before they died.

Twelve had their homes ransacked and burned.

Two lost their sons serving in the Revolutionary Army; another had two sons captured.

Nine of the 56 fought and died from wounds or hardships of the Revolutionary War.

They signed and they pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor.

What kind of men were they?

Twenty-four were lawyers and jurists.
Eleven were merchants,
Nine were farmers and large plantation owners; men of means, well educated, but they signed the Declaration of Independence knowing full well that the penalty would be death if they were captured.

Carter Braxton of Virginia, a wealthy planter and trader, saw his ships swept from the seas by the British Navy. He sold his home and properties to pay his debts, and died in rags.

Thomas McKeam was so hounded by the British that he was forced to move his family almost constantly. He served in the Congress without pay, and his family was kept in hiding. His possessions were taken from him, and poverty was his reward.

Vandals or soldiers looted the properties of Dillery, Hall, Clymer, Walton, Gwinnett, Heyward, Ruttledge, and Middleton.

At the battle of Yorktown, Thomas Nelson, Jr., noted that the British General Cornwallis had taken over the Nelson home for his headquarters. He quietly urged General George Washington to open fire. The home was destroyed, and Nelson died bankrupt.

Francis Lewis had his home and properties destroyed. The enemy jailed his wife, and she died within a few months.

John Hart was driven from his wife's bedside as she was dying. Their 13 children fled for their lives. His fields and his gristmill were laid to waste. For more than a year he lived in forests and caves, returning home to find his wife dead and his children vanished.

So, take a few minutes while enjoying your 4th of July holiday and silently thank these patriots. It's not much to ask for the price they paid.
