Re: Demarks shame
The way it is done is disgusting yep... ... looks like a "tradition thing massacre"...
But after that, as I eat beef, sheep, veal, chicken, etc...

Re: Demarks shame
Yes, it is something I have seen before Morti.
The people of the Faroe islands would claim that it is something that they have been doing for hundreds of years and an almost religious significance to them.
Personally it is not something I would want to get involved in but, horrific how I may view it, that does not necessary make it wrong. No more, do I believe, should my opinions necessarily be imposed on someone else. If they come to my country of birth & try & impose their ideas on me, then that is a completely different matter. If they are living in their country, carrying on with traditions that I do not necessarily understand then, maybe, that is Up to Them....

About eating abits. Last I was in Jomtien in Chon Buri province, I was chating with a girl of the hotel who come from Isan about how strange it was for a froggy like me to see insect/beattle fried and eaten. She told me she had eatean dog meat once and laughed... still don't know if she was "pulling my leg" just for fun or not... myth/joke or thuth ?

Re: Demarks shame
Quite true DeNuit they do eat dog here notably in Sakhon Nakhon.
Re: Demarks shame
does look a wee bit brutal way to go, but that bbq dolphin steak may be tasty. as a meat eater, i guess i can't complain, them piglets are kind of cute. as are calfs. wonder if vegetables scream at high pitch that we can't hear when killed for our plate. top of the food chain, usually, so we get to eat whatever we please, but no thank to many things. though if dolphin was on the menu and i knew it tasted good, i would probably eat it. mako shark is damn tasty, and the killing of sharks disgusts me, but apparently not enough. although i'd only eat mako.

I tried it once, thought it a bit wough. Must say I did not realize at the time I think they misunderstood me when I said I was a dog lover.

Re: Demarks shame
P.S. Once while driving through Rayong past roadside vendors my then g/f told me they were selling fried mice... Not not a typo... fried mice.
Re: Demarks shame
Anyone had barbied bat ? Seen them on sale by the roadside on the way to Erawan.
Re: Demarks shame
So she wasn't joking... well, shocking for a froggy like me to eat dog... Mind you, when I was living in England, some of my English friends were quite shocked I had eaten horse meat (hum, yummy )... and had eaten also (but didn't like) snails and froggs legs
Re: Demarks shame
think i got it served to me once in a soup, as the meat didn't look like anything familiar. though the soup tasted good, but i left the meat alone. don't think it was in udon, i was in sakon nakhon couple times, before i realized the dog processing plant was there. but not sure where it was. had fat or grizzle connected to the meat that i never saw before, whitish, just didn't look right. if it wasn't a farm raised st. bernard, as i hear they do in china, i don't think it would taste very good.
i'll stick with the usually farm raised meat, and seafood. the wild boar and deer and such doesn't do much for me, not into the gamey taste of it. didn't care for croc/alligator either, think it was alligator, but deep fried, so hard to tell, bit chewy also, as i usually don't care for meat deep fried.

Re: Demarks shame
Isn't it a strange psychological thing... I couldn't eat dolphin (flipper was too cute), kangaroo (skippy), dog (previous dog owner), horse (horse lover - a few grand national winners), but I can eat chicken, beef and pork and not think of Foghorn Leghorn or Miss Piggy.

Re: Demarks shame
Just about any morning market here you find BBQ rat & frog. I've seen tadpoles, eels, variety of fish and insects. Whenever I see the BBQ rat I'm tempted to by one just to give it a try, not that looks appetizing just curious about the taste. Heck, I used to think snails were disgusting until I tried them.
Re: Demarks shame
The "Rat" the Thais eat is not the normal filthy creature you see in derelict buildings. It lives in the fields and is basically a vegetarian, eating rice etc. It is considered quite a delicacy and sells for about 50bht each. To me , it tasted a bit like a barbecued rabbit.

Re: Demarks shame
I lived in Laos for five years, where I lived, was right on Road 8, which is the main road to the Vihn (Vietnam) border crossing. EVERYDAY, there were 8 trucks, each loaded with 40 Bamboo cages, containing 10 dogs, that's 3200 dogs each day, which were on route from Thailand to Vietnam destined for the meal table.
What really concerned me, was the manner in which they were transported, the cages were stacked five high, which meant that the dogs at the bottom, were getting the crap and urine from all those above, the stench was atrocious. and on top of that, the dogs had no means of receiving drinking water, the journey took up to 3 days
As with the Dolphins, it is also the inhuman method in which they are slaughtered, I'm led to believe that the dogs are tied up and beaten to such an extent that they are terrified, which apparently, increases the adrenalin to the muscles, making the meat more tender, and then killed by slitting their throats.

Re: Demarks shame
I have heard the opposite that animals,ie mammals in distress have tougher meat,if adrenalin is released.
