AFTER Dan’s ill-fated Internet match on his first Thailand visit with the lady who professed to be a hairdresser, but in fact turned out to be a bar girl, he was extremely pissed-off with both the lady and the internet dating service. They had guaranteed that they vetted all their clients before they unleashed them on their prospective beaus.

Dan’s Thai-Farang Delight
Thai NetMatch had offered him six initial choices and he’d chosen two. He’d made a final choice, based on emotional rather than intellectual criteria, but the chosen female had been a fraud. As they cost him deep in the purse for their services, especially the guarantee of uprightness, he determined to take them to task for their lack of integrity. When he contacted them, they were extremely apologetic, declaring that they’d been as much conned as he. But at least they offered to overlook the matching fee for the next prospect.
The English autumn was rapidly turning to winter and Dan pined for the tropics. He re-established contact with Dookdik, a Thai-farang lady, who thankfully bore him no grudge for having passed her over for another, and, luckily, hadn’t found a substitute boyfriend. Dookdik wanted a kind-hearted farang, like her English father, for reciprocal friendship, hopefully leading to marriage.
They began contacting each other by email and phone, till Dan had the brainwave of investing in two web-cams, one of which he posted to Dookdik. December eventually dawned and Dan began ticking off the days on his wall calendar. He phoned various airlines and finally decided on Air Vigo, a small independent airline, but at least it only made one stopover and didn’t cost him excessively. Dookdik met him at Suvarnabhumi, much to his delight, and all his misgivings evaporated the first moment he saw the real her.
Dookdik was of normal Thai height, coming up to Dan’s shoulder and he immediately felt protective towards her. They went into one of the airport restaurants, because Dookdik, being half Thai, was perennially hungry and she’d also never explored Suvarnabhumi before and was intrigued. They sat and munched delicacies at outrageous prices and discussed what to do for Dan’s fortnight’s holiday.
It was immediately apparent to Dan that he’d made a far better choice this time. Dookdik was 32, quick-witted, vivacious and spoke excellent English, having been well taught by her father. She was also far more beautiful than the web-cam and video depictions and he felt himself overcoming his initial apprehensiveness and falling in love all over again. From the love-light in her eyes and her manifest devotion, it was obvious the feeling was mutual. Finally, Dan thought contentedly, I’m going to have a really fulfilling relationship. The internet dating agency had ultimately produced a winner.
Dookdik had lived in Bangkok all her life and had a small condo in Ekkamai to which they hastily repaired after finishing their meal. They spent the rest of the day in bed, exploring each other languorously, Oh, yes, indeed, I’ve definitely made the right choice this time, Dan thought, as he recovered from their third exertion, which had reached previously unscaled heights; apparently for both of them.
They decided to go to Koh Samui as Dookdik was due a holiday and she’d heard good reports of the island. They stayed at the luxurious Renaissance in a villa, which Dan paid by credit card as it was fantastically expensive, but well worth it. During their time spent on the hotel’s private beach, bar and spa, they gradually cemented their relationship, thoroughly enjoying each other’s company.
After a few days, a mutually-shared but unspoken thought surfaced, voiced by Dookdik, when might Dan move to Thailand permanently? Dan had thought often about moving to Thailand after his first taste of the climate; something reinforced every time the UK thermometer dropped to zero. Conveniently, Dan’s multinational computer firm had a branch in Bangkok and he didn’t think it would be too difficult to arrange a transfer. Yes, having found a lady he could invest his future in and maybe even have kids with, England suddenly lost all its attraction. He would most definitely make enquiries as soon as he returned home he told her as she smiled triumphantly, but endearingly into his eyes.
After ten further days of unmitigated bliss on Samui’s tropical paradise, they flew back to Bangkok for the last few days of Dan’s holiday. They spent the time shopping and snacking in such stores as Emporium and the Paragon Centre and went to the movies twice, once to see the latest Harry Potter film and Zodiac, a film about serial killing, which Dookdik didn’t appreciate much.
Then it was time to return and Dan and Dookdik said a fond, but tearful farewell at the airport, but at least next time, Dan would be returning with prospects and that was all that mattered.

For what it is worth l asked my thai daughter in law why it is culturally acceptable for a wider age gap in relationships and her answer was that whilst the thai culture has a system of minor wives it is not necessarily acceptable to the female and by taking an older partner they believe there is less chance of their partner straying from the relationship. This and the fact that an older farang will provide security to them are seen to be key issues. I guess my daughter in law's response also confirms the general consensus on this forum that gold digging is not the cornerstone to every thai - farang relationship.
Even in the local village l see thai-thai marriages where there is a full generational age gap. This may be as a result of the sinsod where a poor farm boy in order to save sufficient money for his future bride has to work for many years and by the time he has enough for the sinsod the girls of his generation have already married and therefore he then starts looking into the following generation for a partner with the cycle repeating itself through the years. I may be wrong and apologise if any offence taken.

I think he is naive when it comes to Thailand and its pitfalls...he has never even been to Thailand before, how could you possible know anything or even think about about starting a relationship with a girl, she could say anything she likes online just to get you on the hook...i did think about the religious side of things, but then you got muslims killing people(and themselves) and thinking they will be besieged with virgins....now killing someone and thinking you will get shagged by virgins is pretty silly really, and they are supposed to be religious people...some priests (men of the cloth) (and not only catholic ones) have a liking for young boys...and yes they are religious people...and preach religion,so proof they are not all sweetness and light would he be able to have one back in the US..? i think he probably would, just like any country.

A MAN who was 64 when he wed a neighbour aged 17 has announced they are divorcing.

Disabled Brian Williams eloped with teenage lover Stacey Furneaux in 2004.

But he said his wife, now 22, moved out in June after rows about her coming home late.



He said she turned "cold" - but in a statement through solicitors she claims he "brainwashed" her.

Brian, 69, said: "She's had me for unreasonable behaviour and I've done nothing wrong.

"With her age and my age I'm just going along with it, letting her get on with her life."

Their romance began after Stacey - who lived opposite twice-divorced Brian in Llay, North Wales - became pals with his daughter Tara, 18.
