Wife got back earlier today from shopping in Laos.

She brought back some bottles and I got to wondering how good a deal she got.

Found a very informative site on the Internet - ratings and USA prices for many beers, spirits, and wines.

I don't think you will find a better deal than duty free at Friendship Bridge.
Here are a sampling of some prices my wife gets:
One litre J&B Scotch: 450 baht
One litre Dewars Scotch: 420 Baht
One litre Jamesons Irish Whiskey: 440 baht
One litre Johnny Walker Green Label Single Malt: 900 baht
Five litres California Burgundy: 400 baht
etc., etc., etc.

Yep its a winner that Friendship Bridge Duty Free.

200 Era cigarettes = 70baht

If the wife, girlfriend has not got a passport, get them one so they can enter Laos for 20baht bus fare and 10baht entry in to Laos, heck get some of her mates one to.
You will soon recover the 1,000baht fee in money saved on goods.

I send the missus and a couple of mates at least once a month.

I took the wife and her friend to the bridge in Nong Khai on Saturday.
They went over to Laos to shop.

I retired to a local hotel with a pool for the afternoon.
I got talking to a few of local ex pat community.

They informed me of increaced co operation between the Thai and Lao customs recently.
A number of bar owners had followed home and raided after restocking trips.
They were talking of 10 cases of Scotch a trip plus cigarettes to match.

Yes this is what happens!People take the p1ss,and in the end everyone has to suffer.Because of greed.In the end customs will be checking everybody!I thought I was a bit over the top with 4 bottles of scotch!

Thats why I say get the wife to take some friends with her.
Nobody is taking the piss, all have their alloted allocation and its for personal use.
Abiding by all the laws, not even stretching them

I fail to see how you could get 10 cases of scotch back anyway, you would need to take a truck over and from what I have seen they are pretty diligent on checking the trucks.
Did the bar owners take 120 people over with them so they all had just one bottle each and where able to pass through customs?

I've had a few in my Vigo but 120 would be a little to cramped me thinks

Saint, you will have to arrange for "diplomatic relations" between Lao/Thai to end whilst she's there, and they may shut the border

The wife goes to the duty free store everytime I go up for the 90 day report. Canadian Crown Royal is 508 baht a bottle. She also likes to buy clothes there. I sit and read a book and have lunch while she goes with a friend.

And, if I have any fear, it's that she won't come back........ With my whiskey.

I ventured a taste and it is sweet and tastes better than it smells. I am on my fourth bottle now and the room is all fuzzy and I picture myself in a boat on a river with tangerine trees and marmalade skies... somebody calls me, I answer quite slowly a girl with kaleidoscope eyes.

I could get hooked on this.

At the end of the day a 640 ml bottle of 8% proof alcohol for 25฿ is not to be sniffed at and I mean that literally.

i would advise against drinking this stuff on a regular basis . my wife informs me that its worse for you than loas cow , causes internal bleeding apparently ? she says only the really bad alchy thais drink it , even her father would not touch it , and he was a bottle of loas cow a day man . incidently he died at the ripe old age of 62 with kidney failure !!!! but on the other hand its certainly cheap

Sato is made from mainly fermented sticky rice.Many country folk illegally produce their own.Its delicious. However some rice producers have been licensed to make it for sale, it is but a poor cousin to the down on the farm product.If you buy it make sure it has the excise stamp on the bottle top as possession of unlicensed alcohol carries a stiff fine.

The village made stuff as Val says is absolutely delicious, it kind of reminds me of real Lemonade and you can gulp it down just as quick

Didn't know they made a legal version so will be keeping an eye out for it so I can join IA on his magical mystery tour

Do they sell it in the Mom and Pop shops? I hate having to go into the complek.

Not sure if they sell it in mom and pop shops Roy but you can get it in 7-11.

This is the legal one that has tax/excise label.

Can i ask Fy 1810.....what exactly is 'Loas Cow'....is it a type of drink that comes from a cow..ie a alcoholic laden milk drink..? what is the Loas part...?

I am quite experianced in things Thai...but not come across this before, maybe its a new fangled term of sorts..
Also I did a google search but it didn't shed any more light on what it is.

I found it very good for the insomnia OT. I tried Camomile tea on Thursday night but woke at 5am. Drank Siam Sato on Friday night and woke about 11am. I specifically bought a watch a while back that has the date and DAY of the week for those mornings after a LEO football night when I have a mild curiosity about what day of the week it is.

I think if I get used to this Siam Sato I may be looking for a new watch that also tells me what planet I am on...
