does life begin at 40
does life begin at 40
Every boby keeps telling me life begins at forty but is that really the case, if now fifty is the new forty and if it is and i finally settle down full time in the udon thani area it seems to me that life begins at 60 , and if that is so if i get to 60 will the new 60 be 70 it makes me wonder if life will ever begin these days if people keep moving the bloody thing

I imagine it would very much depend on what you have been doing for the previous 39 years
Re: does life begin at 40
i don't know about 40-50-60, god, i hope not any later, some days i feel my 54, other days, am i still alive and how much longer can it go on. on the good days, i wonder how these youngsters can't even keep up.depend on what you have been doing for the previous 39 years
guess it depends on what you think is important to your life. took me a while to decide what i wanted to be when i grew up, well, if i every do, sorry if repeating myself, but once i became a working class hero, the only think i looked forward to was retiring. that done, i can pick chose what i wanted, which since my advanced maturity, or lack, continually changes, but keeps things interesting. not having to answer to anyone except the handsome devil in the mirror is enough. the rest is easy, no more butt kissing, though i failed terribly in that and office politics, could explain 30 jobs in thirty years.
as long as someone needs you, cares about you and loves you, the good life already started, though it gets much better after retirement, so hang in there. respect yourself and others, and life is good. do your best at whatever you attempt, though there will be many trials and tribulations. which we all fail and succeed at. hopefully succeeding more. smile, life is good. everyday is a gift, i'm trying for another 20 years myself, though if i crap out tomorrow................................beside that really sucking, .....no regrets.
i think the expression life begins at 40, because most chickies have entered menopause. once past that hormonal swing, that's got to suck also, but life has to be great once done.

I think if one makes the radical change of leaving Falangland to live in Thailand, one could say the life has begun again completely different than the past and that would be at whatever age!
I have personally had many different ''life''cycles, all radically different than the others, this one ,in Thailand, has been the most relaxed and comfortable of all!Although,I have some great memories of experiences in the past ''lives'' that make me smile from achievement, experience, gratitude and acknowledgment that I have lived over 40 years longer than many expected, including myself!

Re: does life begin at 40
maybe when you reach the mile stone of 40 , this is the decade when you start to discover who you really are as a person and get rid of all past b/s who knows (god i am getting a bit deep now) time will tell ,the last 20 years have been a rollacoaster so bring it on
Re: does life begin at 40
Once i thought life ended once you were 40! Then I wondered if it would ever 'begin' again. Answer - yes, it did at 56, in Udon. A bit stop start at present, but hoping to go full throttle in a year or so. In reality, it is all about motivation, enjoyment and a bit of luck; can restart anytime!
Re: does life begin at 40
40 was right at the mark for me; that is when I arrived here. Up to 40, I had very little to sometimes no control over my life. After I turned 40 and came to Thailand to stay, I have complete freedom to decide what I do with my life. This could be another reason that I am so happy and content here.

Remember that old adage: "today is the first day of the rest of your life"

Bottom line: "enjoy yourself...it's later than you think".One of my favorite poems is by Douglas Malloch, called, “Its Fine Today”. In this poem he is telling us that we should not worry about what happened yesterday, or what may happen tomorrow, but to live one day at a time! Below is his poem in its entirety.
“Sure, this world is full of trouble–I ain’t said it ain’t; Lord, I’ve had enough and double reason for complaint. Rain and storm have come to fret me, skies are often gray; thorns and brambles have beset me on the road–but say, ain’t it fine today?
“What’s the use of always weepin’, making trouble last? What’s the use of always keepin thinkin’ of the past? Each must have his tribulation—water with his wine; life, it ain’t no celebration, trouble? –I’ve had mine—but today is fine!”
“It’s today that I am livin’, not a month ago. Havin’; losin’; takin’; givin’; as time wills it so. Yesterday a cloud of sorrow fell across the way; it may rain again tomorrow, it may rain—but say, ain’t it fine today?”
I remember that one of my wife’s favorite sayings is “Today is the first day of the rest of your life!” Meaning of course that today we begin our life all over again. And we can do so every morning. We can begin every morning with a day with no mistakes in it—so far at least. Every day will not be perfect, but we can determine to make it a day of adventure and achievement, a day to live and enjoy. Or we can determine to simply survive another boring and unproductive day.
