Udon Thani: Beware the Farang Con Man Scammer

Post by monaliza » October 31, 2009, 10:35 am

Now living in Udon Thani is a con man who is dangerous both physically and financially. He is a trained Muy Thai fighter who likes to get drunk and assault farang and Thais in bars. He has assaulted at least three farang, and three Thais, including his wife. His wife had to go to the hospital to have ten stitches in her head, and she told everyone it was because he had hit her. He (we will call him Con), had hit her. The Thai neighbors say that he hits her frequently. There are several assault arrests on file with the Udon Thani police, and many domestic violence calls.

Con lives in Udon on a tourist visa, but he operates many businesses, all as scams from his town house. He has a Muy Thai website that advertises many fine facilities, which do exist at the Sports Complex. The only problem is that he is barred from going there because he collected money from farang and did not pay his Thai partners. The Thais at the Complex do not like this man. All of his farang trainees quit because he continually jacked up the prices and often did not show up to train. He now operates this business on the roof of his house when he manages to con someone in.

His main cash cow is an internet dating website. For the last year he has been selling stock in this website telling suckers that he has 500 Thai ladies waiting to sign up. There are no Thai ladies, and this operates as a stock scam. He has sold BT 370,000 worth of stock in this scam, and has yet to deliver one share. Con also brags that he got another BT 200,000 more from a guy in Canada. Con promises that the money he gets will be spent to set up a first class website, but in fact, thewebiste is just a cheap kit site, and Con steals the money for himself. After more than a year, the site is still not operating with any customers. Con seems like a very likable guy and talks well, like all con men.

To sell stock, he has a picture portfolio of about 200 lovely Thai girls who are going to sign up. This is all a scam as there are no Thai girls. He also uses the pics for another scam, a dating service. He shows the pigeon the pics, and then gets money up front for introductions, anywhere from 4K to 10K baht. The only dates the pigeon will get are with any older women that Con can scare up. Promised return money is never refunded.

Another business he operates with his tourist visa is as a personal trainer. He charges 400 baht a session and is very capable in this field. He uses this entrée to gain the confidence of his customer, and everyone I know who has trained with Con is out money that Con borrows or scams. Con is famous for borrowing money in Udon and seldom pays it back and only if extreme pressure in applied. Con used to live in BKK, and I would bet a lot that he has a very bad record there as well.

He has had many other businesses as well. One of them was buying duty free cigarettes and sending them to England. He had a partner in this who sold the cigarettes. This business ended when Con stole the money to buy the cigarettes, and simply told his partner to F--- off. He also had a business selling replica purses purchased in Nong Khai and illegally sending them to countries where they are banned.

Con has a very colorful background, including five years served in penitentiaries in Florida. He says for Immigration violation, (he is from Canada), but he also brags that he was a big time drug dealer in Florida, so you can make your own judgment. Con has a very colorful record with Udon police as well. He has been arrested several times for drunk driving and assault. The police were called to his home on many occasions for domestic violence.

Con loves to drink and he is a mean drunk. He weighs in at about 100 kilos, and it is all muscle. He likes to go out at night and get drunk and hit people. He looks for fights. This backfired one night when a former student clobbered him to keep Con from physically assaulting a bar girl. Con claims the sexy bar girl is his girl friend. She says he is her customer. Con has no problem assaulting either males or females.

Con is a very, very dangerous man who violates all kinds of Thai law. I have filed a very extensive report about him with the Tourist Police and so have several other farang. I am also completing a very comprehensive report to Thai Immigration in BKK and Nong Khai. I am going to do everything I can to get him barred from Thailand. If anyone has had unpleasant dealings with Con, I would urge you to file a complaint with the Tourist Police. I cannot understand why a person of this ilk is allowed to remain here when the rest of us are thoroughly examined for our visas.

Udon Thani: Beware the Farang Con Man Scammer

Post by monaliza » October 31, 2009, 10:42 am

I would also like to add that I bought a Tuk Tuk from Con from BT 35,000. I left it parked at his house, and he sold it again to someone else, promising me to pay it back. Of course, I never have seen one baht fromCon. Con promises anything, and never delivers, and always explains that nothing is ever his fault. It is always someone else who is screwing things up.

It appears as though you have extensive knowledge of this person and a very extensive knowledge of his financial dealings.
I guess warning people to prevent them getting 'ripped off' is fine but as he is not named and has many different 'business dealings' - it might not be immediately apparent to an unknowing person who he is - unless they have had prior dealings with him.

For the sake of legalities after the allegations made in your post - he probably should not be named on this website.

Much of your post seems a personal vengeance against this guy and whilst publicising it does indeed warn others to be aware - I hope that the thread doesn't become a common shouting ground between him and you.

Double standards here Paul, Im sorry

Lee outed 2 people recently on UM for non payment of accounts etc and allowed a thread that was about these 2 people and the other alleged issues to continue for months.

Once the money owing to UM was paid the thread was locked witin hours.

Wazza,

My post was a gentle 'suggestion' not to name the person and that the OP was largely stating allegations against someone which the majority of people may or may not know of him.

It was done to 'cover our backsides' for allowing (as yet unproven allegations) to be made and publically published against an individual.

We could have simply removed the post, but it was left, as it was intended as a 'warning' for others to be on their guard so the information was there but without 'blacklisting' anyone by name.

We don't want legal problems later down the line though.

Double standards?

You simply don't know what went on regarding the other thread you have referred to.
Legal, moral and personal issues came into play, but obviously were not made public on the forum

Yes for the majority of people it looks like the money was paid and the soon after the thread was locked.
So you think ah "hes' got his money - thats the end of it - lets close the thread"
It wasn't like that.

There is a whole lot more to it than that, which is Lee's business and I would suggest that if you want to know all the details you PM him yourself.

Now please can we get back onto the topic of the aforementioned gentleman in Udon?

Hi wazza, I'd just like to point out that Gareth asked me to remove the 'missing property manager' thread after he settled his bills with UM. This coupled with other issues made me decide that locking it was the best action to take at the time. It wasn't a case of 'I've got my money now, sod the rest of you'. Far from it in fact and I'm sorry if it came across that way.

Any member that still has problems with the 'missing property manager' is more than welcome to start a new thread and post their experiences on the forum. ;)

Not double standards at all wazza, but very similar circumstances.
In the case of the other thread it was started by someone who wished to get in touch with an Estate Agent in Udon Thani about his keys but could not get a reply. It then became apparent that this person was no longer in Udon Thani. Lee volunteered the information that this person also owed him money. After a great deal of conversation the missing Estate Agent contacted Lee with the money & the Original Poster with the where abouts of his keys. This completely cleared the only two issues that anyone with issues with the Estate Agent had reported & for this reason the thread was locked - not deleted, locked.
During the thread there were claims that the Estate Agent owed sums of money to other people in Udon Thani - but none of these people ever posted to say that was indeed the case. The thread also got 'muddied' with claims that a former partner of the Estate Agent had also left Udon Thani in a hurry owing sums of money. While this may have been true & indeed unresolved no one actually claimed to be owed money by him.
There are also legal considerations to consider - one which posters often seem oblivious of, but I can they do play a part. If anyone had a claim about either the two people in the original thread then they have a perfect right to raise it & no one is stopping them. However the problems highlighted in that particular thread had been resolved & so the best decision was to lock it.
As far as Paul's note on this thread I think it is fair comment and certainly not displaying 'double standards' by anyone.

I know the gentleman, and although he is a pain in the ass, and maybe deserved the slap he got from his ex-student, I don't think he's any worst than many expats living in LOS, too many are out to make a fast buck and trample over anyone on the way, lending money everywhere, setting up silly partnerships, etc.

On the other side of the coin, ie. tourist visa, illegally working, etc., I don't think it's right to grass people on issues like this, there are many people staying in LOS illegally or even working illegally, I don't like moral police.

I think a lot of OPs (whole page) write-up is a little over exaggerated and reaps of personal vendetta, if you are out of pocket join the other 1000s of expats. Anyone who's lost money here should take a long look in mirror and ask themselves "where did I go wrong?" as long as you keep blaming others it will happen to you again.
1. Don't lend money to anybody
2. When buying items, check and then take all relevant paperwork away, make sure the sale is cast-iron and remove the item from their possession.
3. Don't buy items for ladies you just met unless you intend to gift it to her, otherwise wait a year, get married and record every purchase in her name and get her to sign stating it was purchased with your money, courts are now ruling in favour of the falang in divorce settlements .

To have so much knowledge of this person tells me that you have had many financial dealings with him. What's that saying "fool me once - shame on you. Fool me twice - shame on me".

What's that other saying?

"Forewarned is forearmed"

Thanks to the OP for the heads up =D>

Ok maybe you have a point however, this person seem to run amok whenever he feels likeit and as for 'Grassing' to immigration, as many many of us have the privledge of dealing with the Immigration Dept at least once a year and the dealings in many cases have been fraught, I for one if I knew this persons name and address and all his dealing I would certainly make sure the powers that be KNEW, down to the last detail, we have had a few such 'Tykes ' and we are better off without them I can assure you. You may think what you like but I would grass to help and protect those of us who live here legally. Morals be dammed, my safety and those of my friends are more paramount than being seen to be a nice guy.
If you Stef have aproblem with that...........trust me I will not lose any sleep on your thoughts.

yes, always appreciated, but if was dumb enough to fall for any of his 'cons', i don't think i would allow myself to go out by myself.

remember, when arriving in thailand, give them your passport, they give it back, stop leaving the brain at the airport immigrations.

We have all been there LA, and some of us will probably (unwittingly) continue to do so

Unfortunately most of us don't realise its a con / scam until its too late. (Seemed a good idea at the time LOL)

Most of us have been 'caught out' by a Thai person though.

I wonder if the person in question actually sets out to 'con' people or whether the deals just go 'pear-shaped' later on ? and the person is reluctant to rectify the resultant mess? If thats the case - its not really a con - just a crap businessman ! (but a good salesman so it would appear)

Perhaps the OP can tell us?

Having had dealings with this person, the best advice would be to treat carefully where money is concerned and avoid at all costs when drunk!!

If half of what I'm reading here is true the subjects of these scams/attacks may consider what one can buy in Thailand for 5000 Baht. :-#

But Hansaboot,Stef,a poster on this thread says he is no worse than any other farang here in LOS :-k

So knives are the latest fashion accessory to carry around at night here in Udon?
Am due out in town next week, will use a broken bottle in defence if confronted by this toad

I do agree, but in so many cases or being 'scammed' by a Thai there always seems to be some personal feelings involved, this chap is purely financial and I do not think that many will fall, but as they say there is one born every day, ........lol

Over the years Ive heard it a few times - one can get a hitman for 5 k. Far from the truth IMO. Firstly, very few of us farang socialize with the low lifus that would do such a thing for 5 k. Secondly, if the need was there and you found someone who promised to take care of your problem. He would likely go straight to the bib and collect another 50 k in ratmoney. After bib sucked you dry, next stop would be as a guest in one of his majesties facilities.
Nothing personal BD but these kind of statements...
