30 Day Visit Question

I am planning a 30-day visit to Nong Khai during Mar 2010 to conduct some retirment planning with my wife's family. My question, Is there any way to extend the 30-day stay if required?

Just take a trip across the Bridge at 35usd and get stamped back in for a further 30 days.....

The bridge is the Friendship Bridge in NongKhai correct?

A trip to Laos (exits) and then return (enters) gets me a new 30-day period for $35 USD........

I am not certain, but my understanding is that re-entry at a land crossing will only get you 15 more days.

And you may be asked for an onward flight ticket ie evidence of intention to leave the country.

A-Doc, Are you coming to Thailand on a 'visa on arrival' giving you the initial 30 days?
If so I think if you walk round the bridge and re-enter on a VOA you only get another 15 days now? Has this been changed again? Am I wrong?????

As an American, A-doc does not require a visa on arrival - he will be entitled to a 30 day "permitted to stay" stamp.

Same same if he then does a bridge crossing, but as you say, I think only 15 days.

Yes, crossing the bridge will give you only 15 days extra (at this moment). However in a two day trip to Vientiane you can get a tourist visa at the Thai Embassy, two entries will give you at least 120 days extra.

Personally I would apply for a (free) 60 day tourist visa from a consulate/embassy in the USA before getting here. No aggravation, no hassle - I think you can do by post in USA as well. If you need extra to the 60 then you can even (easily) even get an extension to that without leaving Thailand..

Bob you are right on the money. If we are planning to stay longer than a month when we visit, we just drop my passport into the Thai consulate in Sydney and pick it up in a couple of days with a 60 day visa stamp and no cost. I believe if you do it when you get to Thailand there is a cost involved and the usual mountain of red tape...

You are correct of course Jack S, my choice of words 'visa on entry' were poor when I meant arriving at the airport with just a passport, I should have said 'permitted to stay stamp'.

It will be 15 days not 30 - only entry by air get 30 days. Land crossings get 15 days visa exempt entry (except for Malaysians crossing from Malaysia).
