I'm using this product in my attic. Don't let anyone talk you into using the 'bubble' type insulations. [-X

Thanks for that Lovedablues have bookmarked the page. It is always good to get personal recommendations of things members actually use. Like that the insulation is wrapped in foil. Should help if I ever feel the need to go into the attic and give it a few pats. :D

Just had 50 rolls of the foil/fibreglss installed in the attic (bungalow)
I'd like to say what a wonderful difference this has made to cooling the house.
Unfortunately I can't say that. It seems to have made no difference whatsoever and don't forget we are approaching the cooler season. Never mind nothing ventured nothing gained

"It seems to have made no difference"

We lived in our house for 8 years without insulation. You could feel the heat radiate through the ceiling...very uncomfortable. After adding the insulation, we no longer have that sensation. Open the windows in the evening to allow cool air in. Close the windows during the day to keep outside air from being sucked inside.

Insulation won't by itself cool the house. If you've got windows facing due east/west, you're in for a bakery and insulation won't help.

ditto same, house use to radiate heat from every direction, till insulated, foiled rolls on top of asbestos tiles, minimal eves or heat escaping, 2 vented windows, but when popping a tile an poking head in, it was brutal, and could feel the heat coming of tiles. after insulation, 100 % difference, along with some other extended shading, but the insulation was done 1st, before other improvements. the house was usually 5 degrees hotter inside than ambient air. after all done, when sun on other side of house, walking into bedrooms felt like ac was on. drastic difference.

we used the foil rolls, foil both sides, advertised they would be 3 inches when unrolled   funny, but helped a lot. 8)

I have a roof overhang, so most times of the year get no sun on the walls/windows, except at sun rise and sun set (but because of cover don’t get it at sunset). This time of year is different, now get sun on south wall, now to maybe March. Maybe the bottom 3 or 4 feet. But have super block, so hot to the feel on outside, but inside not.

I remember renting, and the walls were hot on both sides, and at evening time, it was like a radiating oven inside, windows open or closed. And come December, cold! While with the super block it stays warm inside during December.

Build costs Aug 09

Post by Mikey3073 » May 31, 2014, 4:59 am

Evening all.

Okay better late than never :D

Got the garage done (and I was done) for bht 500,000 but I have to say I fairly happy with the quality, the builder was from Pandon nr Kumpawapi, I hear that just after it was finished he was killed in a road accident just outside Udon near the army camp.
We were obviously delayed in moving out there because of the UK recession, but we're planning to come to live in Sept 2015. I intend to manage the actual house build myself using just local labor.
At the moment I've gone back to subcontracting so I expect to buy some small plant to bring over - concrete poker, sthill saw, level and staff, bench saw, etc. as they're a taxable expense. Would anyone advise any different ? I did find a place for a 360 machine hire but thought it was a bit steep, but not sure if it included the actual driver, which I don't really need as it's my job here in UK now. Would really appreciate any input weather negative or positive.
I got an approximate price of a container of £1,000 which we intend using for some furniture too. although my friend learned the hard way, that everything must be anchored down while in shipping.

Any way here's the project so far...........

Looks good! Do you have any interior pictures? You say your going to live in it during the house build, did you install a toilet or plumbing in this garage?
I would think that when you get here in September, the weather is perfect to start a build. Rainy season over and temperature's starting to cool down.

Nice pictures Mikey =D>
Thanks for sharing them. I plan to do something similar next year. Nice to know it can be done for under 500K.

(To change the heading, just re-write the subject line when you make a post).

Have you looked at the ridge tiles with vents in them, these are what I hope to use along with vents in the ceiling to draw the hot air up and out, along with insulation over the rest of the ceiling. I think it would work a bit like convection.
Another thought would be vents each end of the apex's and possibly a couple of slow moving low powered 18" or 24" fans. Just to try and stop the heat pushing down.
Also I have seen those whirly bird vents that sort of self power as the heat rises.

I don't know if any of these would re-circulate sufficient air to keep the heat from pushing down into the living area, but sounds like a good theory :D
