Stan,
Basically the teams are put into 4 groups or "pots" of 8 teams.
Pot A is the 8 seeded teams....includes England,Brazil,Spain,Italy etc.
Pot B is Asia/Ocenia/North and Central America....includes USA and Australia which is of interest to you and Jack ! :D
Pot C is Africa and South America including Ivory Coast,Nigeria,Uruguay etc.
Pot D is the European teams such as Portugal,Switzerland,Denmark and the cheating French !

Its slightly more complicated than that but if you go to the BBC Sport website it explains all under the heading "INTERNATIONALS England seeded for 2010 World Cup."

The draw takes place tomorrow at 17.45pm in Cape Town,South Africa....thats 12.45am early hours Saturday morning in Thailand.
statto,I hope your prediction is not correct (and not just for jacks sake :D ) but the BBC reckon an even worse one for England would be Ivory Coast,United States and France.
Hoping for New Zealand,Uruguay and Greece myself ! [-o<

Hope to god we DON'T get Greece ......... I want to watch football matches ...... not the GRASS GROW

I wouldn't even suggest that there might be any Underhand dealing, or that any of the draw might be shhhhh f*xed, but ................... LETS WAIT AND SEE.

What I'd like to know is, if the seedings were done on qualifying, how the heck did Argentina get seeded?
Something stinks, which is normal when FIFA are involved.

It was done after a certain amount of games had been played ...... not after all matches were completed.
If they had waited to the end of qualifying neither Argentina OR ENGLAND would have been seeded.
FRANCE & PORTUGAL would have been seeded instead.

I think the "stink" you refer too means Sepp Splatter is in the house

I think seedings for the top group were done from FIFA world rankings + the host Galee.
I will be surprised if the host do not end up in a very easy group. They are playing to a very low standard & would have not stood much of a chance of qualifying out of an African group if not the hosts.... :(

Yes, agree Statto. The seedings were taken at the end of October. France and Portugal were outside the top 8 then, (England were 7th),but as they had to play 2 extra matches to qualify their seedings went up. It wouldn't have been fair to England who had already qualified if they had been demoted because they didn't need to play the extra matches.
Apparently the French are really pissed off about it. Arrh shame. :D
Anyone want to tell me how Argentina got into the seedings when in October they were 4th in the South America league?

The ONLY certainties with a World Cup draw .......

1) The hosts (South Africa) will get a cushy group.
2) Germany will get a cushy group
3) All attempts will be made to get Spain through the group stages.
4) Anyone who has "rocked the boat" recently (France/Argentina) will get tough groups.

Hence my predicted groups.

Breaking News .......... Breaking News ..............

After failing in their attempt to become the thirty third team in the World Cup 2010, Ireland have now made a request to FIFA to joing the North/Central America Confederation for 2014 qualifying.
It is understood that FIFA are to seriously consider this request on two grounds

1) There are far more Irish in North/Central America than there are in Ireland.
2) A precident has already been set by allowing Australia to play outside their own geographical confederation just because they needed an easier qualifying route.

It is alledged that Liam Brady has told Sepp Splatter, that they are not worried that the USA team might revert to throwing for a touchdown halfway through the match, as they have already had experience of Thierry Henry doing the same.

Latest Update ......... Latest Update ........

It has emerged that a meeting was held this morning in Dublin between Mr Sepp Splatter (FIFA) Mr Michelle Flattini (EUFA) and Mr Liam Shady (Representing the FA of Ireland).
Mr Splatter said that it was regretted that the Irish proposal of playing in the North/Central America Confederation in the 2014 world cup has had to be rejected due to Paddy asking for all their games to be played in Boston so that he could stay with his brother Shaun in Kings Lynn.
In an attempt to appease the ongoing situation Mr Splatter revealed that his committee had descided to split the European Qualifying Groups for 2014, and form an Irish Confederation, which would consist of Northern Ireland and the Republic.
Mr Shady representing the FAI said that there was no way that he could accept that scenario, as the Irish Confederation was only getting 2 places in the finals where as the rest of Europe were getting 14.

The meeting was then closed

Wonder how many times 1950 will be mentioned on British sports channels between now and our opening game?

If England can't qualify out of that group ...well, they should give up.
If SA get through to the next round then very suspect decisions will be involved - or France will be employing a new coach & maybe Arsenal will be looking for a new manager. :D
If "the fix" was in then the fixer must have misheard :D :D
FIFA senior management must have been in tears last night....

Yes,you would think England would qualify comfortably from that group.
But remember all the hype in 2006 when we had a similarly "easy" group and all the hype we were going to win the trophy.
First match,Paraguay.....Beckham scores after 3 mins,Paraguay keeper goes off injured after 5 mins, relentless pressure from England forcing many corners....looked like it would be a massacre.
Then after 20 minutes Paraguay started getting into the game.Second half England tired and we were hanging on to the 1-0 win at the end.
Second match,Trinidad and Tobago.....Surely they would be cannon fodder but,no,we had to rely on two late goals to beat them 2-0.
Third match,Sweden....we never seem to do well against the Swedes. We had a screamer of a goal from Joe Cole but had to settle for a 2-2 draw in the end.

USA,Algeria and Slovenia looks a similar standard group.I think Capello will have the players fully focussed on the football only, unlike Erikkson, and the fitness levels will be a lot better this time around.
