More or less foreigners moving to Udon Thani?
Re: More or less foreigners moving to Udon Thani?
Real ale in Udon! Thats a thought. But getting back to the question, my tongue in cheek estimate could be true. Last year 2 falang in my Thai village; if i count myself, now 3. A 50% increase! Now just need to find next years 1.5 falang, looks like i need to find some new recruits. No shortage of girls there, have been asked by at least 3 more girls to find them a man.

[quote="KHONDAHM"]Being a passive atheist (I don't subscribe to nor care about - but try to respect - others' religions), it is interesting to follow the hijacking of this thread and observe that no one is running around saying "OMG! Those Christians are taking over! Run for your lives!" It's a historic fact that violence, oppression, and intolerance overwhelmingly comes from them more so than Muslims or any other religion. Fleeing religious intolerance, oppression, and yes "religious terrorism" in Europe is how my country got its start - and those weren't Muslims running around whacking everyone - it was Christians and it is unfolding all over again. Both are giving reasons to justify another Crusade or Jihad against the other.
I mean, c'mon...repeating history by generalizing and perpetuating fear of a theological invasion is a bit ridiculous IMHO. Every person I know personally of a variety of religions are all decent human beings. There are wackos in every religion, and it is sad that the wackos are getting so much attention with so much media and a passive audience; but statistically as a percentage of any large population, there are bound to be wackos.
If we have forgotten history, the books are still around - heck, it's now on video. Let's pause for a moment and take the time to revisit and learn from history, not repeat it. " [-o<
What Christians? Other than the United States, it is doubtful if many people in western countries count themselves as Christians anymore. Well, maybe the Catholic countries still do out of habit! There was a survey done in England in which less than 50% of the population said they believed in God, and that was back in the 1850s.
Christians never had a monopoly on all of those heinous deeds that you mentioned. Buddhists, Hindus, Sikhs, Muslims, athiests, animists, agnostics, and various Christian denominations are guilty of all of these crimes be it in Africa, Asia, North and South America, Australia, New Zealand, Europe and the Middle East.
Take it easy and relax...it is not time to man the barricades yet be it vs. Christians or Muslims. But watch out for those politicians.

Re: More or less foreigners moving to Udon Thani?
Oh, I should have added that one reason you may have thought that the Christians are a worse lot than the others is that they tended to get around the world a lot more than other groups, at least after the Muslims were stopped in Hungary. Thus, they could do more damage if they wanted to, as well as bring some good ideas to other parts of the world.
Jesuits, for example, were employed by Ch'ing China for awhile, and Christian missionaries, both Protestant and Catholic, worked to upgrade the status of women in Chinese society by advocating an end to the killing of female babies, an end to foot-binding, an end to polygamy, and the introduction of female education. All of these constructive and progressive acts were adopted by Chinese reformers such as K'ang Yu-wei, Sun Yat-sen and others in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Even the Empress Dowager, thought to be an ultra conservative, issued an edict ending foot-binding somewhere around 1905.
And, no, I am not a Christian so this is not a defence of Christians or Christian missionaries and their work. I am an Anglican atheist. The Anglican part is because I like the history associated with individual Henry VIII and Elizabeth I, and the fact they opposed the papal authority.

Why this ends up with talking about religions?
By the way, I just wonder why many foreigners have moved to Udon Thani.
Isn't it boring to leave here in comparison to Bangkok or Pattaya? I don't know, but I just feel so bored in Udon Thani now.

Dunno. Thread hijacking on this site is pretty common from what I have observed thus far.prae_mont wrote:Why this ends up with talking about religions?
My friend, you are where I was when I moved there for a year or so back in 2005-2006. The place drove me up the wall after a while.prae_mont wrote:By the way, I just wonder why many foreigners have moved to Udon Thani.

Udon is like the Harley you ride long after the scooter (Bangkok) and the crotch-rocket hyper-bike (Pattaya) lose their appeal.
I'll be back permanently in 2010, though.
Cheers!

Ooops! Full stop right there. Nope, I do not think that. I do see how you may have gotten that impression from my post, but my brief post is not the entirety of what goes through my head.Tilokarat wrote:Oh, I should have added that one reason you may have thought that the Christians are a worse lot than the others...
Really, although I try to respect others and their right to believe what they want to believe, I could not care less about any of the religions; but at the same time I do not think it is right for one to bash the others or the others to bash one. Stones and glass houses, so to speak. The rhetoric since 911 is WAAAAAAY up and that is not healthy for the world.

City life for some, country life for others. Just been to Bangkok and Chiangmai......the traffic is horrendous. Yes, it's nice to be in the city for a few days, but no way jose would I live there.

Re: More or less foreigners moving to Udon Thani?
Some people might find it funny, that I, a thai girl, who was born here in Udon Thani and even grew up here, just find her own city quite boring. The problem is that I have to move back to my Mum's house again. I lived my own life for 8 years during my study in Germany. I could go everywhere even abroard without asking anyone's permission. Now I'm graduated, got a master degree but still waiting for a job, living with Mama and bored myself. What's a sad life. So it's nothing to do with Udon Thani itself that I feel so bored. What I have to do is to adapt myself to the thai lifestyle, which isn't easy to do.
Re: More or less foreigners moving to Udon Thani?
That's quite a saleable background = young Thai citizen with graduate degree and fluent in Thai, English, German, and any other language you acquired.prae_mont wrote:... a thai girl, who was born here in Udon Thani and even grew up here... ...lived my own life for 8 years during my study in Germany... ... got a master degree but still waiting for a job, living with Mama
It's your German-related education and experience that strikes me as your most special asset. You have likely thought of the following searches for work.
If a high-paying position with an international company appeals to you, why have you not gone to Bangkok. The German embassy should entertain your requests for German-related information. What German-based businesses have branches or Thai partners in Thailand? Which hotels are know for their German guests. Where is the Luftansa bangkok office? If you are also fluent in French do the same with the French embassy.
You are aware that Udon Thani has a large number of Germans in the province. Some of them speak little English or Thai. You might find some work as a translator of German to Thai or English. Law offices, banks, schools likely need such an on-call serice.
You could advertise locally that you are an honest, educated, German-speaking Thai that would consider becoming the Thai partner in a German's Udon Thani business.
Choke dee!
Re: More or less foreigners moving to Udon Thani?
Well, the matter is, I've got a scholarship from the Thai government and I have to work for them after the graduation.
But the government hasn't found the right job for me yet (I bet you know how Thai gov works). So I have to wait.
But thanks anyway for the advice. I'd try to find some part time job or mini job as soon as I can. Because I can't stand living like a usless person.
By the way, does anyone of you look for a german teacher???

Really, Khun Dahm, here you go highjacking another thread, and talking about religion. What's up with that?
Just joking...just joking. 55555
This is why I wrote '...may have thought...' since it was not 100% clear about your statement.
Prae-mont, don't waste your time thinking about Pattaya and Bangkok been superior to Udonthani for entertainment. Go to the Tae Wan Daeng down the end of the road from the Complex and enjoy.
In addition, go and see Tukatan Chollada tomorrow night (14th) at the festival. I wish I could go to that, but I must enjoy the -15 degree temperatures here in Toronto.
