Thaksin's TV Show

Post by old-timer » January 13, 2010, 9:51 am

This morning I watched another episode of Thaksin's TV Broadcast without understanding a word he said as I don't speak Thai. I am not particularly for or against the guy, but I am astonished as to how, as he is a convicted criminal in this country, how he is allowed to broadcast on TV here in Udon Thani. Is there any explanation for this?

I guess the same way as Ronnie Biggs was allowed to say things to the British press from Brazil for so long. No extradition order, free to say what you like.

That was more like reporters reporting on what Biggs was saying and doing in Brazil, and I should think the Thai press would report on everything Thaksin says and does in the same way, however this TV broadcast is something else altogether. I am surprised the authorities allow it.

I think you must be referring to the Peoples Channel" This is only available on satellite TV, so would be very difficult to control although they have previously stopped it but only temporary as they simply transmit on a different wavelength.

It's the money that makes everything possible. This TV Channel belongs to Thaksin (I supposed). And there are plenty of "red" people who enjoy wachting them.

I don't understand why people still believe in Thaksin. My cousin said, his life would have been better, if Thaksin had came back to Thailand. It sounded very silly. Thaksin didn't make the thai economic any better, he just pushed the money into the market, persuaded people to spend the future money, buying things with credit card. And now people are sitting with thier debt. So it was all the fake economic boom during his periode.

It's quite sad to see that Thai people are seperated into two groups. Why people don't give Apisit's government a chance to work in the next few years. Why people just don't understand that we need stability in the politic. There will be no new investments from the foriengers as well as the thai investors themselves. Even the tourism sector is suffering from that (since the airport was closed by the demonstrators). So I hope there won't be a new election soon.

Perhaps I shouldn't be surprised over seemingly official tolerance (police, Amphoe)of the erection of an enormous poster of him and another up this way. I'm sure there's probably a 'dig' in whatever is written, as well as apparently wishing people a Happy New Year. There are actually probably not many around this way who would want it removed, officially or otherwise, and frankly I'd expect violence is anyone tried.
