Safety in Udon Thani
Safety in Udon Thani
Hi,
I got a 3-month internship at the Udon Thani Rajabhat University starting in June.
But as the overall situation in Thailand is at a critical point I am worrying about the safety during my stay and I am therefore thinking about even canceling this internship.
I would be very thankfull if someone local could tell me about the current situation Udon Thani,
whether it is safe to stay there for a longer period or not.
Thank you very much in advance.

Re: Safety in Udon Thani
If you were happy to come to Udon Thani prior to the problems in Bangkok, there is no reason to change your mind based on events to date.
It is not possible to forecast what is going to happen in the future, but my guess (and hope) is the red shirts will leave Bangkok soon, and the country will swing into election mode around the time your internship finishes.

Currently, Udon is nothing like what's happening in BKK. As for what the future holds, who knows, but I'm not very worried about it.marfab2 wrote:Hi,

Re: Safety in Udon Thani
It could all all blow up at any time really, ......... IN Bangkok , but at the moment in Udon quiet peaceful, ahh what a great place !
Re: Safety in Udon Thani
I understand your concerns, but I think Udon is over all a safe and friendly place. The few red shirt rallies I have witnessed were peaceful. This is mostly red shirt territory so I don't see the type of divisivness here that would lead to dangerous conflicts. I would say don't change your plans. Come to Udon and continue you educational experience at the University while you have the chance.
Re: Safety in Udon Thani
This is Thailand and on the whole you are as sae here as you would be at home, you have more chance of being knocked off your motorcycle should you drive one , than been attacked here in Udon.
Whatever happens in Bangkok will be unlikely to spill over into the provinces unless Civil War is declared, and that ain't likely to happen .
So worry not ,come and enjoy and learn or whatever , you do not say where you are coming from , here is OK

Here just business a usual.
Re: Safety in Udon Thani
I'm going to Udon in june and November. I'm more worried about the travel insurance being invalidated due to Uk governments fear of problems than anything political in Thailand affecting me. As khun Paul says, only worry about the motor bikes!
Re: Safety in Udon Thani
I've never heard of many problems in udon.Maybe ya might have trouble walking the streets around 3 in the morning, but that can be a problem anywhere.I think you'll like it at udon.It has that small town flavor but with big city life.Well somewhat.Come and enjoy it,you'll be glad you did.
Re: Safety in Udon Thani
It depends on the reaction to tonight's killing of the red shirt general, of course anything is possible really , Thailand is NOT a democracy, we will just have to wait and maybe make plans for escape. At least we don't have far to go, as long as the border is not closed .........
Re: Safety in Udon Thani
Thew state of emergency will not alter a lot for foreigners who go about their daily business, drinking, shopping and the like.
For Thais who wish to demonstrate against whatever, it will be difficult but on the whole no real safety fears.

Re: Safety in Udon Thani
I am sure that's what the Aussie guy who was killed in Bangkok 2 weeks ago thought too. If the bullets start flying, stray ones could be closer than you think. The whole of Udon centre would be a very dangerous place indeed and food distribution would be seriously interrupted. Even now, i am VERY nervous about going into Bangkok Bank !Khun Paul wrote:Thew state of emergency will not alter a lot for foreigners who go about their daily business, drinking, shopping and the like.

Many major wars are started by killings of leaders, World War 1, Rwandan genocide, let's hope not here

The news looks grim, have a suitcase packed all your documents, and some clothes, ready for a quick exit to your home country.
Glad I never burnt any bridges with my home country, by selling up everything.

I am not aware of any Australian being killed in Bangkok in the recent past. Neither has it appeared in any of the Australian press.udonuk1 wrote: I am sure that's what the Aussie guy who was killed in Bangkok 2 weeks ago thought too.

You know this to will blow over with time, this is my home. It would take a lot for me to walk away. Personaly here in Udon I have not been effected at all. No different the Military Coup so far. The news for the most part is coming from Bangkok and even that is a in a small limited area,

Sorry he was Japanese, but Benjamin Rowse, 26, from Melbourne, was injured by bomb blast
Re: Safety in Udon Thani
IN BANGKOK, any foreigner stuipd enough to go see, are liable to get hurt by something or another. So they get no sympathy from me, here in Udon would be another matter, maybe I am wrong but here life goes on, those left here do actually live in the real world and know they need to work .
Re: Safety in Udon Thani
I will never hang around one of these rally's here or anywhere else. We have been included in the State of Emergency, But, it has very little to do with any activity here thus far. Simply put in place as there is a heavy influence in this area. Pretty simple see a bunch of people wearing red shirts go another way, they won't follow you. We are not a target.
Re: Safety in Udon Thani
Well if the radio reports I heard just now are correct you can add three more journalists to the list . A Canadian, shot three times and died in hospital ,a Burmese and a Thai TV reporter .All victims of live fire .I did say if the report is correct as I have only heard it from the one source as yet .udonuk1 wrote:Sorry he was Japanese, but Benjamin Rowse, 26, from Melbourne, was injured by bomb blast
