udonmap.com very unuser friendly in 'net cafes!

Post by DesertStorm » August 28, 2010, 11:16 am

Rainy season and my home connection don't go together too well, so I like to visit 'net cafes when my wife goes clothes shopping in town.

I have found it almost impossible to logon at 'net cafes.

Sometimes I am able to logon but as soon as I click anything I get taken straight back to the logon page.

Also, the new posts on the Home page appear as black and almost totally unreadable.

Please note that I have experienced this problem at well over 20 different 'net cafes, all with a variety of connections and browsers.

The Bookhouse is the only public connection that I have found that actually works. But it isn't a 'net cafe.

I know what the problem is at home and I'm working on it.

What I'd like to focus on is the 'net cafe issue.

Webmaster?

I am also often using cafes DS, but I have not experienced the same problem.
I always use FireFox (rather than IE) in Private Session mode & go directly to the Forum (via a Google search) rather than entering www.udonmap.com which takes you to the Home page & that is a pretty weighty page to load.
Lee is not in Udon at the minute, but I am sure he will answer when he returns....

Wow! I've just tried Firefox for the first time ever and it works a treat on loads of different sites I'd completely given up on. Give it a go, DS!

Tee, hee. Poor old True have received a right earbashing from me of late!!!

Thanks, hangsaboot!

It sure works a treat. Maybe the site owner should put something on his homepage about this site working better with Mozilla, right under this greeting:

It's not the cafe but the browser settings.

The problem is in Certificate Revocation, if the check box is checked you got the problem.

It's very easy to fix, takes 20 secs, in any location.

Go to TOOLS > INTERNET OPTIONS > ADVANCED > SECURITY > look for "Check for Publisher's Certificate Revocation", if the box is checked empty it. Go back and log in: problem solved!

It took me 2 months to find out at home (desk top), I use IE but also tried Firefox: same problem. It seems some browsers (or newer/older versions) have this in their standard settings.

Good luck.

Joe

Desert Storm, Different members prefer different Browsers.

There has been much debate previously about which Browser to use. Many members do indeed use Firefox, (as do I on one computer and Opera on another). Some still swear by Internet Explorer which they feel works well for them, and some prefer Opera or I believe Google Chrome. Some of the relative merits of each have been previously discussed on the forum. I think it would however be somewhat presumptuous for the Webmaster to be telling members which Browser to use. It would be rather like him telling us which AV programme to use. Ultimately it is down to personal choice.

On the infrequent occasions I have used Internet shops I haven't had a problem accessing UM forum, whether I've used IE (more usually) or Firefox.

Here are some of the previous threads discussing Browsers and Internet connections, which maybe of interest to you:

DS,

Here's a tip for you.

If you frequent internet shops you may want to consider Firefox Portable. You can download the browser to a thumb drive. One particular feature I like about it is that it leaves no personal information behind on the machine you run it on.

Here's more info:
Mozilla Firefox®, Portable Edition is the popular Mozilla Firefox web browser bundled with a PortableApps.com Launcher as a portable app, so you can take your bookmarks, extensions and saved passwords with you.

Good catch Joe.
On my own PC I have noticed that certain (serious) browser updates change the settings you have made back to the 'standard' settings. I guess this is a real problem in a cafe as people would not usually sign on & do.

You're absolutely right Bob, the same problems I was faced with after updating IE. My suspicion was drawn when Firefox gave the same problems. Later I found out that both browser (versions) had the same settings.
It's like always: if you know where the problem is you soon find the solution...

That is very interesting information! Can you please tell me where to find that setting in Firefox?

Papa. Thanks for that & certainly information I did not know.
Do you know if it can be a problem to use in some cafes?? I know that Pop Pop is very protective (rightly so :D :D ) about his equipment & I think it is impossible to download programs on his kit. Could you still use this app on a thumb drive in those circumstance, do you know??

I'm not really sure what you mean, but yes it can be used on any computer. Pop's concern is thumb drives that have viruses, a quick scan will take care of that. If you have no other means of downloading it just ask Pop's (might cost you a Leo :D ).

Once the the application is downloaded and installed on the thumb drive it can be used on any computer. The browser is opened via the thumb drive. If you have a PC or notebook at home, you can copy the bookmarks onto FF portable.

I use it when I travel or when I ever visit an internet shop. When I'm done and close the browser, cookies are automatically dumped, no trace is left on the host computer. The only draw back is possibly picking up a virus from an infected computer.

Desert Storm, I've only just picked up this thread.

My personal experience of some local Internet cafes is far from positive. Some use very old computers, out of date software and have multiple viruses. Some shops customize the web browsing settings such as text and link colours, this overrides the websites default colour scheme and can effect your browsing experience.

I test the udonmap site via multiple browsers on a fairly regularly and have not found any problems. However my computers are up-to-date with all the latest software. I would suggest the problems you are getting are due to inadequate computers and/or software or someone messing around with the IE browser settings.

As suggested above take a copy of firefox with you on a usb drive and browse the net using that.
