My neighbor and I read a lot books. We have pretty much exhausted the supply in Nong Khai and most of Harry's.So if anybody knows of other places that like to swap or sell,we would be interested!
Just a thought I wonder if the big used book store in Chaing Mia would ship you some if you ordered them.
The real crime you can buy books in the states at garage sales and swap meets for as little as a dime, by the time you got through shipping the darn things and paying whatever fess Thailand would want you would go broke.

There is a book shop in Udon Thani where you can buy some used books written in English language (not a lot of choices, but you might find something worth the visit).
The name of this shop is "K.K. Book House". It is located on Prajak Road (H-8 on the map), on the same side and very near SB Furniture and Index (the ones that are located in the center of the town) shops.

Yeah Gecko is ok. There is also a bookstore beside Gecko that I find to have a better selection. At least in terms of history.
What about AUA? I know in CM they have a fairly nice library. When I was living there you paid your yearly membership, something like 100 bht, and you had free run of the library.
I always thought a nice idea would be for the farang community to get together and start a social club. You know a place where people could congregate to talk, play chess, cards & the like. Also a "library' could be established here stocked with books donated from the farang community. I know a lot of you guys are saying "hey that's what the bars are for." Well, maybe not for the books, but certainly for the congregating. But what if you don't want to hang out at the bar at 2pm? Maybe this could work!
A local charity could also be designated, such as the orphanage, that would allow our already substantial contributions to the community to be more widely recognized. More importantly it would be the right thing to do regardless of recognition, but I think everybody knows what I mean.
The farang community is possibly the only community not recognized civicly in Thailand. In my country every group has some sort of organization. I, of course, am not talking about becoming active politically. Who would want that aggravation? But what if someone gets screwed by a builder? Or what if someone found themselves in a mess over a traffic incident. The "club" could act as a repository of information where people could gather information and receive advice. If nothing else, it will allow people to feel like they are not alone in a difficult situation.
Simply musing here but I think with the wealth of experience I find here in the forum this could be beneficial not only for the farang community, but to the community as a whole.
I guess I should have used this to start a new post, but it sort of snowballed as I was writing. And, quite frankly, I was too lazy to start over. Plus I have the house to myself tonight so I'm going to open a beer lao & check out all the great youtube music suggestions y'all sent me,
Cheers,

Where the little book stores,or other places like Harrys Bar(that has a very large used book section for swapping) in Udon,Is really what I am after in my post!Place you can go to swap books and or buy used books relatively inexpensive.I pick up books at several places in BKK,but I have been only going there once or twice a year and sometimes ,I'mso interested in getting out of Bangkok,I forget to go to the bookstore!
Stan have you tried the newish book store on the west side of the Nong Khai market?
Run by Robert & his lovely Lao wife - http://www.bookfocusasia.com
Checked it out during my last trip & he had a fair selection there with a good return policy..
Cheers.

Bookstore next to Jeans/T-shirt place at southwest corner of Prajak and Tikattanon Roads (O-12 on UdonMap) had a rack full of new English books when I was in Udon a couple of months ago. Especially enjoyed Brit author Christopher Robbin's books on Air America and The Ravens that I found there.
If you do make it back to Bangkok to buy books, try the Asia Books place in Siam Paragon Mall. Skytrain stops at the new mall. A good selection of English books there but I must look kinda shifty cuz they follow you around while you stroll through their aisles.

Thanks Carl,That store has been mentioned to me a lot lately(maybe you, when we met at the gym) and I will definitely give them a looksee. Thanks Polehawk,I have yet to be in BKK since the completion of ''Paragon'',I will probably check them out when there this month. There are some good spots in BKK.''Elite''across from the Emporium was my favorite,my neighbor tells me that there is a relatively new and better one on the same side as the Emporium halfway to Asoke/Sumkunvit junction. There is a good, but very small store at the end of Kaosrn rd.
I have to admit ,I am a planner and a gatherer of info. That being the main motivation for my post.
