Electric car at its best

Post by BobHelm » November 6, 2010, 10:40 am

'Nemesis' electric supercar launched by Stroud company
http://news.bbc.co.uk/local/gloucesters ... 162711.stm

OK, no mention of costs & mileage, BUT if one of the big boys could start producing commercial electric cars looking like this then it would signal the end of the petrol engine!!

Tesla roadster -- just 240 miles on a charge. Maybe ok for a little village like England, but not in the real world.

Charging times vary depending on available voltage and amperage. In a best case scenario Tesla claims a recharge time of approximately 4 hours using 240v and a 90 amp breaker and a worst case of 48 hours using 120v and a 15 amp breaker. (electricity is not free and its production generates pollution.)

Price -- a low, low $109,000.

Rii~ight.

No, just a desperately sad & troubled individual who does not even understand much about even the country he was born in, let alone anywhere else.
The average United States driver travels 29 miles per day and is driving a total of 55 minutes per day.

..... and (going slightly off topic) for those who prefer to make do with just two wheels:

From the TT website:
MotoCzysz, from Portland, Oregon, narrowly missed out on recording the first 100mph lap by an electric bike at the Isle of Man TT Races.

Their E1PC machine, ridden by Californian Mark Miller, lapped the iconic mountain course in a time of 23 minutes 22.89 seconds to take the honours in the TT Zero race.

Tomorrow sees the famous Royal Automobile Club's annual London to Brighton Veteran Car Run (LBVCR) being run
http://www.lbvcr.com/

Today however, there'll be a run in reverse for more modern motors. It's the inaugural London Future Car Challenge, with a group of eco vehicles driving up from Brighton. So far, seven have entered including a Tesla Roadster, Gordon Murray T25 and a Mitsubishi i-MiEV although more entries are expected from Smart, Ford and others.

Both would, I imagine, be well worth attending.

Americans' lives do not start and end at their commute to and from work.
Any trip more than 100 miles out is either a two-day trip or requires a 4-hour break in the middle.
Not very practical for any place with wide open spaces, is it?
It might suit insular, non-traveling hermits perfectly. Now if they only had a hunnerd grand...

Tex, leave it alone mate. Australia makes the US look like a Village as far as "Wide Open Spaces" are concerned. You have no Idea [-X

What makes you think "wide open spaces" was a reference to the US?
Obsess much?

Maybe I was talking about Mongolia or Greenland-- both of which make Oz look downright metropolitan.
You have no Idea
Yes, I think I do -- having been to Greenland, Mongolia and Australia.

Well there are another 1,200 people in a multitude of countries who do not agree with you Tex...
Sales

Tesla had delivered more than 1,200 cars to customers in more than 25 countries by July 2010.[2] Tesla CEO, Chairman and Product Architect Elon Musk said in June 2009 that the company would begin producing a right-hand-drive version of the car in 2010.[61] The base price for the 2010 models, which began shipping to customers in July 2009, was US$109,000. The Roadster has a bumper-to-bumper 3-year, 36,000-mile (58,000 km) warranty. Tesla also offers an extended powertrain warranty and a battery replacement warranty. Options ranging from colors to audio to high-power connectors for faster charging will increase the price.

In July 2009, Tesla announced that US consumers could finance the Roadster through Bank of America. Financing is available for up to 75 percent of the total vehicle purchase price. A customer approved for a 5-year financing term on a base Roadster could put down as little as $20,000 before taxes and net of the US federal tax credit. The monthly payment would be approximately $1,700 at a 5 percent annual percentage rate (APR). That monthly payment is typical for high performance, although the Roadster costs roughly $4 to refuel and does not require routine oil changes or exhaust system work. Unlike internal combustion engines, Teslas get a 100 percent waiver on sales, luxury and use taxes in at least four states, and they qualify for commuter lane privileges, free parking and free charging in many regions.[62]

Tesla sells Roadsters directly to customers. It sells online, in 13 showrooms and over toll-free phone lines in North America and Europe. Tesla does not operate through franchise dealerships but operates company-owned stores. The company has said that it takes its retail cues from Apple, Starbucks and other non-automotive retailers.[63]

The company has been shipping cars to European customers since the summer of 2009. Tesla sold out of its EU special-edition vehicle, which had a 2010 model-year production run of 250 cars, with a base price of €99,000.[64]

Tesla opened a showroom in London, its first outside the US, on June 25, 2009, and announced at the same time that it would start building right-hand-drive models from early 2010.[65] Tesla opened a store in Munich in September 2009 and a store in Monaco in November 2009. It opened stores in Zurich and Copenhagen in the summer of 2010. Reservations for the 2010 Roadster are available for a 3,000 Euro refundable reservation fee.[66][67]

People will buy mood rings and pet rocks, too. Doesn't mean it's a good idea.

Twelve hundred units is hardly a validation of success. But I suppose with monthly payments of $1,700, they're not for everybody. I wonder how much the new batteries will cost after five years?

1,200 people think it is a good idea to fork out over $100,000 on one in 1 corner.
Tex, in the other corner, believes that, because it will only travel 8 times the daily distance travelled by US commuters between recharges, it is totally unsuited to 'wide open spaces'...
Yes, no contest on what most sensible people think is there....

that 1200 people can fork over a 100 grand plus for en electric roadster is not a reflection of the masses yearning for electric vehicles. It's the ultra wealthy buying a new "green" toy.. When the manufacturers can provide electric vehicles at a price comparable to normal compact cars currently used for commuting AND plus up the range to around 500 km they'll have a winner..

I drove to Phuket last month -- 1,500 km one-way. It took two days.
How long you reckon it would take in one of the 'lectrik jobs?

'Bout a week.

And how long would it take you to drive to New York in your pickup Tex.
Have you never heard of using the tool necessary to fit the task??

Your words almost exactly echo the first words i wrote in this thread Frazee.
Personally I would not want (& could not afford) a Bugatti Veyron Super Sport but that does not stop me seeing that it is a piece of engineering genius and that the technology used will eventually benefit all motorist.

The big manufacturers have zero incentive to produce an electric vehicle & won't bother unless they are forced into it...These cutting edge electric vehicles may have restrictions but they are the way forward...

Hi,
Watching the car program on T.V. Sat. Had a lot about a electric sports car. Looked like the one in the photo. Basic details were 0 to 60mph in 4 secs. and cost was 88,000GBP. range was nearly 200 miles on one charge.
The one i liked showed you a 3 cylinder car in which the engine provided the power to charge the fuel cells. Nearly 90 miles to a gallon of fuel. Can't remember the cost.
