We have at least one service station here in Ban Dung that is fiddling its meters --- by at least 10%. It's the only place where I use more than 1 litre per 10kms.
Take care where you buy and a check on your vehicles fuel usage.

BD,the bigger worry is that a lot of local petrol stations here add solvents(paint thinners) to give themselves a decent margin.Be interesting to know what percentage of solvents will bugger the engine.

I dont think there will be much economising with the use of fuel in the UK, we are reknown for just being able to grin and bear it (usually for the worst), and then complaining about it in the pub on a Friday night

I know the pump operators locally pretty well and i stop and chat to them if i go in the garage. What i noticed was how little each car owner was putting in the tank so things are biting hard.I would say the average was 300 Baht per car.

Will have to say hee there is a lot of change of driving habits. Over the holiday weekend there was very little traffic. Over the last two weeks I have seen quite a few small new cars on the road. Some folks have gotten the point.Already had a vehicle that gets 35 mpg and the other on is 25 mpg. I admit do not own a hybrid but no hummer here by no means or even close. Try Hyundai Accent.

The funny thing about that Dave is that the war may really backfire on ole George. By reading (and this is my only source) newspapers from the middle east it appears Iraq is working with the government of Iran and will align with them after the new government is formed. Something that has been happening for the past few months is that China has been making oil contracts with Iran. It is now making US news.
Statement 1. Did we do this to secure a nice oil supply for China? I am sure that Bush did not want to do that but if they do align with Iran the possibility exist.
Statement 2. YOu are not going to get a blockade againt Iran because Russiawill not let Iran be blockaded. The reason. They are still smarting over being kicked out of Iraq. They have made some good contracts in Iran and between Iran and China.
Statement 3. China is going to give some of this oil to India that they are getting from Iran.
Statement 4. This is the biggee. It seems from the press that the group that is in control at present in Iraq is tightly tied to Iran and the ruling clerics there.
Guys these are some of my thought from reading press reports. I really can not defend them. you can go read the papers of the middle east on the web as I do. These are just things I thought about from reading them. The only thing I can say is that by reading them and then watching our news here in the states seems like things I see happen there we see a lot aof the same things here but about 2 to 4 weeks later. It has to play out there before it makes the news here. I have seen some of this in the Bangkok Post and Nation on the net also.
Have fun.

Actually I was trying to be civil by using the word "discount". We are in the country, paid for the war and paid for the land with blood= we take the oil. I like being the "good guys" as I have said before but all this taking it on the chin to prove we are the good guys makes us suckers.

We are saying the same thing. I think bush got his butt in a wringer and will in the end get it squeezed. When you squeeze a turnip you can not get blood. all you get is pulp.

in the UK diesel is around 95 pence per litre in the last few weeks it has been ฃ1. I find my Diesel Daihatsu Fourtrak runs great on vegetable which I can buy from any supermarket for 43 pence per litre. I also use our old vegi oil after we have cooked with it, I filter this first though. Theres a lovely smell of barbaque from the exhaust.

I've read that filtered used cooking oil can be used without ill effect to the engine.
Here the latest buzz is about the oil from physic nuts with nurseries running out of stock:
http://www.tropilab.com/jatropha-cur.html
http://www.ibw.com.ni/~biomasa/tempate1.htm
Unfortunately the yield on current strains is only 400 Kilos per rai when commercial viablity as 1200 kilos per rai.All these poor Isaan farmers are rushing out thinking they are going to make a fortune on a plant that grows on poor Isaan soils.

I heard on the radio a few weeks ago that the diesel engine was originally designed to run on nut oil.

Alternative fuels will, out of necessity, be the future. Biodiesels from vegetable oils and recycled restaurant greases are one source now available. If interested in reading about biodiesels and other alternative fuels, this is a good link on what is presently available:
http://www.eere.energy.gov/afdc/index.html
Unfortunately, here in the states, we probably won't see much more development with these fuels while the current Bush administration is in office.

Are you serious
Whe I used to drive a diesel, I used to be able to get that agricultural diesel (red stuff) from a friend pretty damn cheap, does'nt seem to be so readily available any more though.

A friend on Canvey island with a business next to a Chinese says there are people doing the rounds, buying the used cooking oil, filtering it and putting it in their trucks.
