Re: LCD tvs
Not sure about 42" but I bought a 32" LCD in Big C for under 9000baht. Make is TCL. Good picture, but must have cheap inerds, as it takes ages to change channel. OK for bedroom though.
Re: LCD tvs
Hi,
You get what you pay for. Some of the places are selling of cheap LCD T.V. but they have not got HD, which is slowly coming in at last. This is why so cheap, trying to get rid of old stock. For a 42 full H.D. etc. you will be paying in the range of 20K t0 25K. Been looking myself this week, I am going to get a 32 LCD T.V. a Samsung or L.G., so far these have, IMO the best picture, in the range of 14K to 19K. One of these makes, can't remember which, has a series 3, 4, and 5. The 5 being a very good picture. Don't forget to check the sound reproduction, they don't usually have the sound on in the shop. The speakers in some are, to put it bluntly, cr*p. Small speakers due to the size of the T.V.. I think will invest in surround sound.
Let me know what you get please and what you think of it. I am going home next week for a month so will not be buying untill I get back.

Re: LCD tvs
Just bought a new 42" Panasonic TH-42U20. LCD. full HD . # Hdmi. 7ms. It was on offer at 20,990bht inc del and fixing . previously 26,990, so a good buy from Power Buy in Big C .I chose this model because it has a built in card reader facility that enables me to watch my photos direct from camera or phone in big screen format .
The reason most of these are on offer is the new LED sets are the in thing .

Re: LCD tvs
Yes, Ive noticed the price of LCD's seems to be falling, probably as Trubrit said because of LED's entering the market.
Also, agree on the check out the volume, I've got quite a good Sharp LCD 32", but whenever a male speaks it vibrates. I use external speakers to overcome that.
Be careful, some cheaper models are not full HD.
The models 3, 4 & 5 are in the Samsung range.

Re: LCD tvs
it is our intention to put up about 4-6 more lcd tv screens outside - to show a variety of things , comedy , sports etc
obviously cost is a factor being so many .
i,m also mindful that if people are watching a sporting event , here in the evening , they may have had more than 1 chang which may affect the eyesight anyway
my knowledge of the HD revolution doesnt equate to much ..
i,m assuming that the picture /signal /broadcast needs to be broadcast in HD >?
by that i mean playing my old dvds on a HD tv wont actually give me HD quality ? unless i buy a HD version of the same dvd
and unless i subscribe to a HD package from True , the picture wont be HD even if i was watching it on a HD tv .?
also planning to try and get , for example , The Ashes , streamed via Sky , over the internet , will probably result in reduced picture quality anyway ..
the comments regarding the sound , have given me something i need to check when i start purchasing ( one by one ) the tvs .
as always , thanks for taking the trouble to provide reliable , local info guys
mucho appreciatedo
and if you stumble across bargain brand name TVs for less than 20k - please post where !

Re: LCD tvs
Librarian . Up until this week I thought HD meant heavy duty. So like you I am not really clued up. Now I have learnt a bit. You are correct, if the input, signal or disc is not high definition then your TV will still show it as normal .Now Truevision. You are on dodgy ground here . Firstly if its for public/commercial viewing then you pay a much higher premium .Next you can only watch one program at a time , no matter how many sets you have, unless you have a separate decoder for each set . At a premium of course .The HD transmission gives you just 3 channels in hd and costs an extra 290bht a month on top of the 1,500bht something you already pay for the gold. Making it with tax, nearly 2,000bht monthly per set .
I would suggest you pay extra for one large, say 50" one which everyone can watch .Might work out cheaper overall .

Re: LCD tvs
Don't know about pricing in Udon Thani, but I can recommend a good website to look up specs and reviews for a particular TV in which you may have an interest. Best Buy in the USA probably sells more TV's than anyone, and their website is www.bestbuy.com. Once on the site just click the link under Products, then TV and Video, then TV and you're into the good stuff. Galee commented above on his slow changing channels on his new TV. Just Google "slow changing channels" and you will be surprised at some of the remedies out there. Galee just might find the solution to his problem. All the best!
Re: LCD tvs
Jeremy,,I am not an expert in TV's but I know what I like and I usually take a long time to check .WE had a 27 in. Sony Trinitron for 10 years, but the sound quality diminished over time.
I had been looking at Plasmas and LEDs for a couple of years and saw prices from around 20K to over 100K,but I could not tell the difference in pictures ,only size! Then I reallized that all the stores play DVD's that are designed for selling,So I had a store put on ''Saving Private Ryan'' movie DVD and ALL the screens were not very clear,so I waited another year or so of looking around.
Like TB,I did not what HD was until I started researching brands on the computer and after watching the Super Bowl at my Thai friends house on his 130K LED HDTV that wasn't any clearer than any cheaper ones.I asked him about the HD and was told that Thailand didn't have HD programming,so most of the pictures looked the same,I immediately went out and bought a Samsung 32'' for 15K at Tesco-Lotus and I have been happy every since!
Now I see that UBC has some HD channels listed that one can subscribe to.Don't know what the quality is and I have not felt the urge to experiment!
I was wondering if buying multiple screens that are larger than 32'' is really necessary and prudent cost wise.I was thinking along the lines of 1-2 main screens at 50'' and the rest at 32''!
Anyway, you know best as,IMO,you have been making great moves so far! =D> =D> =D>

Re: LCD tvs
I was in Tesco, Nong Khai today, and they had 42 inch LCD Samsung 4 series for 19,990, and LG plasma for 18,990.
It may be worth looking (or calling) the Udon Tesco(s) to see if they have the same prices.
When I was buying a TV for my mother in Oz last year (LCD), every shop I went to recommended Samsung over LG.

Re: LCD tvs
the problem with most tv in thailand is that they are all made in china or thailand with chinese components......
i asked the repairman once what brand to buy and he said not much difference as u open them up all same components, yes made in china...., my advice how ever is when you have the extra cash, to buy a led tv as they allready are not expensive..., now a samsung salesman claims that the leds are made in korea and off better quality ( true or not?)
try also not to go more big than 42inch, when bigger strange image format in widescreen ( looks like all the people have square heads...)not long most off the channels will be in hd, so most off the new tv's are in hd, do not forget to change your sat receiver to hd also.....
when i buy something my wive always get crazy because i compare prices in so many shops, but at the end we always end up saving money, you can check on internet prices in lotus , big c , carrefour, makro, power buy , home pro etc..., but remember none off these have ( good ) after sale service, in case the tv brake down, i would advise buy the tv in electronic shop with repair service, go well prepared there, ( knowing the cheapest price from the model you want to buy) and than you can bargain , and get a good price....

Re: LCD tvs
A comment on HD: has been useless in Thailand so far, but now the Night Market not only sells Blue Ray discs (there is no HD DVD, it's a Blue Ray Disc then), they also sell you the BD player as well. Finally affordable HD viewing in Udon
Re: LCD tvs
I sneaked a peek at the wife's letter to Santa. She wants to trash the 29" crt tv for a lcd/plasma. Looking at the options, I'm inclined to get a lcd (less heat, less electricity) as we're not into games/fast action and generally look at our tv head-on rather than from the side. Seems to be everyone is recommending the full HD (1920x1080) these days, even though True UBC regular programming won't use that capability. I'm also inclined to go with a Samsung as I know they provide excellent service at their repair facility in Udon. I'm guessing 32" full HD LCD will run around 15,000 baht.
I'm all ears for anyone out there with recent purchasing experience.

Re: LCD tvs
In the old market there was a chap who sold blue ray disc's but now he has stopped! Any idea where we can still buy these DVD's, without paying a fortune for them....?
Re: LCD tvs
Hi Parrot.
Got the same problem. Looking at some in LCD T.V's in Tesco's this morning. Samsung 32". All prices were lower than 15KB. Around 11-12K. This is with full H.D.. 42" about 16-18K I think, was mainly interested in 32" ones.
Mind you when we get this for them, and the 3D T.V's start to appear, they will want these. You can't win.
According to information broadcasted on True they are using H.D. now. Most likely have to pay extra, for these channels, but have not checked this.

Re: LCD tvs
Bought mine last xmas 32 inch Samsung but with the lower Resolution. Still works as good as Gold but the 1920-1080 should be a lot better. Only problem I have with it is the sound seems a bit "Tinny" where the Hitachi I had before had a more Base sound to it, which I prefer. Still good Value at those Prices though =D>
