New International School in NK,next term!

FWIW, my sister-in-law hasn't heard of any news of an International school existing now or in the future, unless it's some top secret info she's not privy to. Anyway, she added that there's one classroom of which all subjects are taught in English by a farang. If I hear anything more I'll pass it on.

Bang on AND it would be THE daftest time of the year to be going opening an international school. The new term's just around the corner. (Please correct me if I'm wrong on that).

If you get a chance,would you ask her why the grades from last term can not be posted or given until after school starts again?Never seen it happen at any other school! It would be interesting to her her remarks or if she completed her grading and turned them in yet!

Anyway, it appears that the international program begins this term with 7th & 10th grade, next year 8th & 11th grades will be added and then the 9th & 12th grade will be added by the 3rd year. The cost per term is 90,000bt.

Stan what's your daughter's room number/teachers name, I'll see if I can get the S-I-L to get the info.

What is the name of the new international school? Does it have a website yet? As a certified and experienced teacher and school administrator, I'd be very interested in getting information about the possibility of a position with them. Any information would be helpful!

90,000:00 per term per pupil NOW THAT IS HIGH, 180,000 per year plus I expect other expenses, which cloud cuckoo land does she live in.
You can get personal one to one tutors for whateer subjects you want less than that for a year for at least 5 subjects . Working on one tutor having at least 2 sessions of one hour per week times 5 ( subjects ) at 350 baht per hour equals approx 182,000 baht per year on a 52 week year, whcih we all know wont happen yet the school is working on 180,000 per pupil on a 2 term year of about 9 months teaching in total which is about 5000 baht a week .

I am not that stupid but i think the private tutor is by far the better option. personalised to each individual student unlike Thai schools however they are dressed up to be which allegedly cater for all but in fact fail miserably on many counts.

Is homeschooling allowed here? I know it's illegal in some countries. For example, there's a high-profile case at the moment of a German family being granted asylum in the US as they were being "persecuted" for homeschooling their kids there. Other EU countries have the same policy.

Just wonder about Thailand. Don't imagine they have some kind of home-schooling certification/accreditation process in place. Anyone know?

I think it depends on what is meant by the term "illegal"' dude.
For example, in the UK, by law every child has to attend the government provided education system from aged 5 years onwards. However, there are private schooling which the parents can pay for their children to attend which automatically negates the need to attend the government scheme. Equally there are approved "home schooling' systems whereby a parent signs their children up for an approved course which will undoubtedly have compulsory testing within the course that ensures that the chid(ren) are keeping to an acceptable standard.
I also believe that it would be pretty easy for a parent to obtain the (paid) services of a qualified teacher to teach their children at home.
However, I think the law gets quite strict when the parents of children wish to teach their own children at home without outside assistance. The aim of this is an attempt to ensure that the best interests of the child's education are served. So the legal rights are all with the Education Department & parents need to convince that authority that what they wish to do is in the best interest of the child - rather than an automatic right of a parent to make that decision off their own backs.

Spoke to my friend again this morning,informed her that I was unable to confirm anything that she told me about the school,nor were my daughters grade available online or at the school.

She seemed shocked,gave me her brothers name and suggested that I contact him at the school,explaining the she sent me !So I will try that today,although the car is ,again blocked in the soi because of the new concrete road being poured and elevated with no access provided

Well,I apologize for not updating the info as I found myself confused by various seemingly conflicting reports.Basicly,I asked my daughter about the program and she had no knowledge of it,since nobody else reported on it and my lack of seeing any new falang staff on campus or coming and going at my daily dropping off and picking up my daughter,I assumed it was a dead issue!

I ran into an acquaintance that has been involved with setting up and administrating the English dept for ,I believe the local campus of KKU,which he is teaching at now.I asked him if he had heard anything about the new International Program at my daughters school and he replied that he had,was asked if he could help recruit some teachers for the program.He was embarassed because some of the excellent staff he contacted were teaching at International schools in Bangkok and although interested in leaving Bangkok,they were insulted by the wages offered here(15K a month),which is about 15-25% of their present wages!So he had no involvement!

Then a couple of months ago,I met a teacher that taught math in the ''English program'' at my daughters school.He told me that he also taught math to the students in the IP at the school and that he taught all the students in English only,had a thai teacher assigned to the class for assistance,but never used them!

Anyway he said therte were 14 kids in the IP and there parents paid dearly for there enrollment.He thought about 200K,but wasn't sure.

So the bottomline is they do have the program!My daughter is in her final semester anyway,so I didn't follow through!

The ''travel to Teach'' program owner was my neighbour for 6 years,she has now moved to Mexico,but her local business staff members have moved in ,so I will try to get more info on the ''fgcc program'' you mentioned.
I don't think it is a degree program,but is probably connected to the local community adult program that has various classes in English instruction that has been here for years where the teachers are all volunteers,but are given accomodation expense help.

Thanks for the update. I've worked in schools in Isaan for the better part of 6 years & getting accurate information about plans, changes, updates is often a lost cause. Usually, the changes are announced the same day, or even after they have occurred. I look forward to hearing what you find out about the volunteer teaching outfit. My wife & I do something similar in Khon Kaen.

Hello nkstan and SkyyWalker,

My name is Robert and I am a teacher/systems administrator at FGCC in the computer dept. You can see my picture on the staff page on our website (the guy with the mustache, which has since disappeared).

We offer english classes in the early evening (17:30-18:30 ; depending on students' schedule) for adults to attend after work. If there are not enough students signing up and committing, we do cancel this evening class.

And we have a program for students who have graduated from High School. All (most) classes are taught in English. This is a 2 1/2 year program. It is a degree program, but unfortunately govt. support for our school and program has been shaky. Subjects include english of course, general science, computer classes (incl. web site design), thai language and some social science subjects.

Some former students of FGCC work for "Travel To Teach", and we have another group of former students who work in nong khai for an american company based in san diego.
