Re: Any Irish In Udon Thani?
Bob is the Oracle of Udon and imparts heaps of very useful info, a great asset to UM imo.

You are too kind Dokya..Dokya wrote:Bob is the Oracle of Udon and imparts heaps of very useful info, a great asset to UM imo.
Truth is that I do not mind having a stroll around Udon, rather than m/c, tuk tuk or car & that gives me time to look around. Accompanied by the fact that I have an excellent memory that, thankfully, Leo has surprisingly not impaired. I have lived in the fair city for a while as well....

Which is all to your credit BH.
It's just very commendable that you find the time to share your experiences and offer advice where applicable. =D>

Thanks for the advice HAB
Tried the bad ladies during my first couple of Thai years....have had a good one for the last 4 years, hence know plenty about where places are, but little about what they are like when it comes to bars...

Not at all OT just have a different set of moral standards than the ones that you seem to lack.
Doesn't make me better than you, nor worse & certainly does not require abuse from you either.

Plastic Irish, is where only one parent is from Eire, or Grandparents.
Irish "Theme" pubs.
Kilkenny and Cafferys nitrokeg plastic beer.
English second home owners in Dublin.
Not as bad as Plastic Scots, where there are millions of them, mostly living in Canada, and can't find Scotland on the map.

Re: Any Irish In Udon Thani?
Not a bad explanation, however a better name for English people with a second home in Ireland is West Brits, thats what we call them anyway. They speak with a very posh accent! Mostly very nice people who have family ties here. Our countries, like America and Ireland, have an interwoven past.

whale oil beef hooked..me Ma is from Coleraine, and me Da is from Port Steward, but I was born in the Land of the Long White Cloud, Aotearoa, NZ. I'll cheer for the All Blacks first, and Ireland second

Thing it's Portstewart, I was born in Bushmills just down the coast but moved to England when I was 4. Parents took me back to visit grandparents many times, so beautiful, you should go.maaka wrote:whale oil beef hooked..me Ma is from Coleraine, and me Da is from Port Steward, but I was born in the Land of the Long White Cloud, Aotearoa, NZ. Re: Any Irish In Udon Thani?
rodger rodger..yup my Ma is rambling on lately about wanting to head back to the old sod, to see her just as old sister one last time, and asked me if I would take her, but I think it was the drink talking, as she is 83yrs old and can hardly walk more than 100 paces and suffers from dementure, not an easy one to go travelling with halfway around the world and back, but who knows one day I might go again, as something keeps calling me..I went when I was a lad back in 63, lived in the old family house in the Long Commons in Coleraine, umpteen to a bed, bugger all food, pokey wee backyard surrounded by a high cold grey stone wall with broken glass on top, even did six months schooling there, and remember getting caned alot for being to outspoken, or something, and of course I have grown up with all the stories and songs that come and go with all the parties the parents had over the decades..I wouldnt mind a trip up the west / north western coast, taking in some of the music in the little village bars before the old voices die out..
I am also adopted into a NZ Maori family here just to complicate matters. A Maori / kiwi of Irish descent. Now thats one for the books..
anyway sorry about the spelling Rodger..half the time my laptop seems to jump the gun and wants to spell things the way its wants too, but anyway you got my drift..

So you lived in the posh part then. Since I went back over the years the whole place changed so much but in some ways so little. If I was you I would go and see. I did the NE coast with my ex as well she had rellies in Carrigart. Superb beaches and scenery. Good luck.
Re: Any Irish In Udon Thani?
yes I believe the Long Commons has gone all posh now, so my sister told me as she was born there and returned two years ago searching for her roots, but back in my parents day it was the slums really, and life for them was worse than Angela's Ashes. I gave my Da the book but he stopped reading it halfway thru, saying it brought back to many bad memories, and that his life had been real nonsense compared to the joker in the book..he had gone blind too as a kid for 6 months due to the poor food and living conditions, and his brothers wheeled him around in a pram, even today his toes overlap each other because he was forced to wear shoes far to small for him..ah well the good old days were so good at all..anyways, yup I might head back to our old stomping ground one day. who knows, maybe thats the part of me thats missing...
