Motorcycle insurance/licence
Motorcycle insurance/licence
Some say the compusory motorcycle insurance all bike are supposed to have is a joke in itself . Be that as it may ,the question is;
Does this insurance cover ALL drivers of the bike or only drivers with a valid licence?
I am having a heck of a time keeping the kids and other unlicenced drivers off the Honda Dream . here in the village it might not make much of a difference ,but I do not have any control over where they go ,once they take off.!

Mooban, I'm not 100% sure about this, but I was once told that it was like a basic third party insurance and applied to whoever was driving. I don't know this next bit , so am guessing , but I would have thought that they would have to have a driving licence and thus be deemed competent to drive.
I have a question on this subject.
My m/bike was bought and registered in Phuket. Currently it is in Phuket, (I use it when I make holiday visits there), though I have the green book here in Udon with me. Does anyone know can I renew the tax and insurance here in Udon, by presenting the green book here? And if so, from what was said previously, could I do that at any Honda shop or Post Office?![Smile :)](./images/smilies/icon_smile.gif)

Does anyone have any knowledge on this?Does anyone know if can I renew my motorbike tax and insurance here in Udon, by presenting the green book here, if the motorbike was bought and registered in another province? If so, from what was said previously, could I do that at any Honda shop or Post Office?
As with motor vehicles, you will have to transfer the motorbike to the new locality, where you will get a new set of number plates. Its not hard to do, especially if there isn't a change of ownership involved. This has to be done at the motorcycle registration office near Ban Hoy market on the Nong khai road in town towards the traffic lights near Tesco. After this you will be able to renew both tax and insurance at any post office.arjay wrote:Does anyone have any knowledge on this?Does anyone know if can I renew my motorbike tax and insurance here in Udon, by presenting the green book here, if the motorbike was bought and registered in another province? Val,does this apply to the transfer of Autos also?I have left my car registered in BK as I suspected I would have a hassle with new plates and registration. Can you register your car each year at a post office?I thought I had to go to the particular land transport office where your residence was located.Though now living in NK,I use the condo address in BK?valentine wrote:As with motor vehicles, you will have to transfer the motorbike to the new locality, where you will get a new set of number plates. Yes exactly the same proceedure but at a different office, located on the road to Khon Kaen about 40kms from town. You will be issued with a new license plate and number showing the Udon Thani registration, after which you can renew both tax and insurance at any post office. You may prefer to do your own insurance though as the PO only use one company so their rate may not be competitive. Both for cars and motorbikes you must have a house paper showing a local address though. If you have registered in your own name a simple form is available from immigratrion without charge that will suffice.BKKSTAN wrote:Val,does this apply to the transfer of Autos also?I have left my car registered in BK as I suspected I would have a hassle with new plates and registration. My car too was bought and registered in Phuket. Whilst my m/bike remains in Phuket, my car is up in Udon with me.
When I renewed the car tax and insurance during this last year, I went to the National Insurance company, (with whom it had been insured when in Phuket). They are part of/behind the Thannachart Bank in Udon and they did it for me. I told them of my new address in Udon several times, but the tax and insurance discs did in fact get sent to my old Phuket address.
I wonder now whether that was because they had not registered my address up here in time or everywhere necessary on their system, or whether it did relate to the fact that the car was still registered (with the transport office) in Phuket.
Any thoughts on that one?

Wow,maybe this weeks trip to Bangkok will be my last ''mandatory'' trip.Bank ,immigration, embassy, drivers licence, car registration will actually be done here without a lot of fuss!I tried to renew my DL to a 5 year at the NK LTO,and was told I had to go to BK.I suspect I didn't know how to handle the ''buying'' of it.So that was one more excuse to just make the yearly trek to BK,where I know my way around, and avoid the hassles of learning the upcountry system. Thanks, next year should easier!

Simple answer to that one Arjay. Read your number plate, if it still shows Phuket then the vehicle licensing office haven't been advised of its transfer.arjay wrote:My car too was bought and registered in Phuket. Whilst my m/bike remains in Phuket, my car is up in Udon with me.

It is still Phuket registered, with 'Phuket" on the number plate. My point was that I was able to renew the tax and insurance through the Insurance company here, but I am not sure whether the documents were sent to my old Phuket address because the insurance company had not updated their own records and/or advised the transport dept (or whoever they renewed the tax through), OR because the car is still registered in Phuket.Simple answer to that one Arjay. Read your number plate, if it still shows Phuket then the vehicle licensing office haven't been advised of its transfer.
If the latter I shall have to watch out this coming year, when I next renew it, as the documents are likely to be sent (EMS) to Phuket again, where I no longer live and will thus be unable to sign for and collect them.
Then they must have renewed it through an office or representative in Phuket as though the vehicle and you were still resident there.arjay wrote:It is still Phuket registered, with 'Phuket" on the number plate. On the bike I use the Suski shop over by Harry's across the street from the Bangkok bank no problems. One bike I had originally was registered in Khan Kean. Much more difficult then yuor talking about they did wiht nio problems at all. Yuo will have to be patient on getting the new plate the dealership will hold it for you to pick up. Just doesn't happen fast.
Mooban the bike insurance my best guess will only cover licensed drivers. It is third party they paid for the wifes injuries with no hazzle, they did not pay for mine. So I know it will cover a passenger, now will that extend to injuries of a different driver probably but I would not bet on it.

I renewed the tax and insurance through the National Insurance company, who appear to be part of or a subsidiary of Thannachart bank. But you never got the new tags, right? Did you get something satisfactory to the police for registration purposes?
No, I didn't get new registration plates, neither did I seek to do so, (as apparently I had no need to do so).
The car is not leased. It is a purchase with some funds borrowed from, and being repaid to, Thannachart bank. The registration documents are in my name.
Unlike my motorbike which is in a previous GF's name and remains in Phuket, where I will have to renew the tax and insurance, as and when I next visit Phuket. I have the green book with me, and had been wondering if I could renew the tax and insurance on the m/bike, whilst up here, prior to my next visit to Phuket.
