English classes will be running from 1.00pm to 3.30pm, whilst the Thai class will be 11.00am to 12.30. So not really the same time I'm sorry to say.

Due to popular demand we will be having Thai classes starting again on 21st September 2010. (6 weeks)

The class will not be for complete beginners, it will be somewhere between beginner and intermediate level.

If you can use Thai in basic every day situations, like ordering food, shopping etc. you will be fine.

You will also learn 'some' letters of the Thai alphabet, but the course will be mostly conversation.

We have an excellent teacher, Took, who does a great job.

Details will follow.

Any questions, please pm me.

Thanks

Nick

There is a thread elsewhere on this forum in which most ex pats state they do not want to and have no need to learn Thai.
Thanks

Took the AUA Thai course in the April/May session with Took. She is a brilliant instructor well suited for a class of Western students. Her background is Bachelor of Arts (English) and she follows a very modern approach to learning the Thai language.

Instead of rote memorization she focuses on a "theme" every week (going to the market, hair cut, noodle bar visit, car accident etc) starting with a word map of everything that might come up in the weeks situation, building the vocabulary then having students write up role plays with a partner and speaking through them. The Friday is usually a visit to the week's theme location (i.e. market, hair salon etc.). We didn't simulate the "car crash" scenario however....5555555!

Parallel to working on the week's theme each week is the inevitable work on the Thai alphabet and written sanscript.

I highly recommend Took's course if you are interested in moving your Thai up a notch. Lots of fun.

That would be like being a fish that cannot swim. I suppose they could always ask for a lifejacket!! But what language would they use?

Seahawk - I believe this offering is all that AUA has at this time due to the numbers of students available.

I started it in April knowing a very basic level of Thai and benefited from it. The social aspect of the classes and the weekly outings were very enjoyable. Graham

Hi Graham.
I have had to travel back to the UK to sort a little business out, but I will be back in Udon at the start of October. My level of Thai is very basic at best. I have lived in Udon for over a year and I'm ashamed to admit my failure in not trying harder to learn the language to any conversational degree. If there is a lack of numbers for making it viable for AUA to start a new course, then that is perfectly understandable. However, if you do hear of any change, or you can (or anybody else for that matter) recommend a good teacher/school for someone at my poor level, I would appreciate your advice.
Thanks All!

We have 6 names down on the list for the beginner/semi-intermediate course starting on Tuesday at 11.00am.

Anyone not sure if it is for them, please come along and 'try before you buy'.

Hi Nick - there was some erroneous information going around that the time had shifted to 3 p.m.....glad to hear you could keep it at 11 a.m....

Hope we get a few more joiners on the "try B4 U buy offer"

I just sent for a course called HIGH SPEED THAI. I saw it on the Thai Visa forum and I did some research. The reasoning behind it sounds sound and it gets some great write ups. I will let you know how it goes. I registered months ago before buying and the admin sends emails about the course. The last one was an email with the heading " I am already studying Thai at a language school" and the reply:

"This largely depends upon how intensively you are studying the Thai language. Most of the schools around Thailand only offer 4 to 10 hours of tuition per week. If you are studying at a school like this you should consider purchasing the HighSpeedThai program. The program will help you reinforce what you have learnt in class and allow you to acquire more vocabulary in an effective manner. Every language contains tens of thousands of words, so when you are starting out you need to try to build a foundational vocabulary as quickly as possible. This is exactly what the HighSpeedThai program has been designed for. You will be able to further reinforce the new words that you learn by bringing them up in class discussion."

Maybe this course will not conflict with the op's course.

I have heard mixed reviews about this course, mostly very good. I believe it is great for learning the Thai alphabet and how to read and write Thai. it is also good for learning the difficult tone rules (which I have the most difficulty with). I heard it costs over 4000 baht - is that correct?

Please keep us informed of your progress, and good luck with learning Thai.
